Real bummer. This venture is no different than that of Musk & Bezos & Branson chasing flight into space. There will undoubtedly be tragedies and loss of life through the development of technologies for civilian space travel.
I respectfully but strongly disagree.
It’s much different than SpaceX.
Musk spent years developing his program, and sacrificed multiple components of his manned mission in proving tests before Bob and Doug got anywhere near a SpaceX capsule.
Then SpaceX made a fully autonomous launch, flight, ISP docking, and return to earth before NASA even considered putting their astronauts on board.
I would say SpaceX was and is held to a much higher standard than any previous NASA program.
To compare any other civilian space endeavor to SpaceX is ludicrous.
And to compare this tin can suicide deal to SpaceX is absurd.
Just my 2 cents.
There’s a good reason why SpaceX is at the forefront of civilian space flight.

They are at the forefront of spaceflight period, civilian or government 😜

Could be overcome with a lip?
I don't know. The insane pressure at that depth obviously involves specialized knowledge. Can you imagine the force of 5,500 PSI acting on a joint that's maybe seven or eight feet in diameter? It has to be incredible.

Let's not forget that even if they do find the sub, there's still the unknown about why it didn't automatically surface like it was designed to do in an emergency. Basically, even if they can find the sub and get a cable or some airbags to it, there's still the risk that it's caught or stuck on something and they won't be able to bring up regardless. Hate to say it, but my money's on recovery and not rescue at this point.

Gonna be real awkward when one guy killed everyone else and has plenty of air

Holy shit, I never thought of that!

I'm not gonna lie... but in a dark way, that would make the movie about this whole ordeal way better 🤯
“I was minding my own business on the other side of the sub when a fight broke out in which everyone was mortally wounded.”

If they do locate the sub I’m sure they have a tow strap with shackle ready to go and tools to hook it up at that depth👍🏻 Just like a broken speed car in the desert, pull it back to camp. Easy peasy.

All this is assuming that it didn’t fold up.
I’m no submersible engineer, but my money says it folded up like an accordion.
Godspeed.

As you guys are mentioning attaching a cable, they more than likely use a "tugger" winch. Most of them are pneumatic. The major issue here is getting enough cable. The bigger the cable the less space you have on the winch. 1000's of feet of cable aren't readily available.

INCREDIBLE
“The barge named “Just Read the Instructions”is located off the coast of Baja California for the recovery. The barge, with the rocket firmly latched to it, is then towed back to San Pedro where the booster stage is prepared for transport by truck to a SPACE X facility for reuse.”

If a “cable” was in the picture it’s likely the size and rating would be tapered.
Smaller cable on bottom, graduating up to heavier and stronger cable nearer the surface.

Because the joint has to resist pressure above 5,500 PSI at depth. The exterior of the titanium hatch is machined with bolt pads around the circumference, and there are threaded titanium inserts formed into the carbon fiber hull. The sealing surface looks to be at least five inches wide.

There's no way the required clamping force could be accomplished using an internal fastening scheme.
My above post is a bit inaccurate.

I got a better look at the door with this video. It has a machined curcumferential flange with bolt holes, and on the hull side a substantial titanium ring is bonded into the carbon fiber. It appears the door was forged. The video shows other details of interest.

I watched a pretty good documentary on it, it pretty much looks like the pilots purposely crashed it.

They followed all the known flight data and the pilots purposely turned the plane the wrong direction then made the ATC calls for the hand-offs into other airspace, and purposely flew right along the demarcation lines between 2 or 3 international airspace bodies so that each of the sectors would assume they were being directed by the other ATCs.

I watched that doc, really makes you think.

I'm going to throw this out there, did anyone call Sea Tow or Tow Boat US ? I'm not sure that a prop change will be valid at this time.

I hate to say this but it's ironic that these five guys all put faith in an experimental sub that reaches depths beyond anything else out there. How could someone in their right mind say, “Seems like a great idea, here’s 250k, take me”. I’m sure that these individuals make calculated business decisions every day to create wealth, but their lack of common sense hindered their decision on this one. It’s not hard to be insensitive on topics like this where we are dealing with an uncertified prototype and marketing it to wealthy individuals to fund your adventures and trills.

This isn't an "Experimental Sub" The Owner of the thing, has been down on every mission so No matter what some say it is past the experimental stage.

I can't believe every comment is I would never...... I couldn't afford it but I would.

I would rather live to 50 then die at 100 having never lived.

How you die, is the point in this situation. Maybe you do just Close your eyes and "Gone" Or (Fill In The Blank) Gruesome. I keep thinking, is it a "One By One" deal, where you slowly watch the others perish, knowing, what is coming soon?

Seems like a good way to get yourself out of a jam, disappear, and start a new life maybe? Anyone with half a brain and a boat load of money isn’t going to hop into a device like this and put their life on the line are they just because?

The whole scenario seems so scammy to me and I keep waiting for the punchline…

Ok, let's talk about the elephant in the room....

Why no seats? How much can 5 small carbon fiber seats weigh anyways? I guess they weren't available on Aliexpress..

They should just order synthetic winch line on Amazon…with free prime delivery they could have had plenty next day

2 outcomes likely at this point: (1) bobbing on the surface unfound and dead due to lack of oxygen or, (2) tinfoil ball on the ocean floor.

I vote #2

The takeaway here is to not visit underwater graveyards..
It's cool, but it's not that cool......
If the whole damn sub was extremely strong plexiglass or at least some big ass windows... then I would say damn, that sounds kinda cool! Still don't want to do it... but pretty cool.

Hell, even a full windshield view would be cool.

But no, $250k for a dinner plate size view of a sunken ship.

I don't comprehend it. Are these people like well I can't see much... but I'm down here. So I did it.

Anyone have a countdown clock going for the estimated time they run out of oxygen? IF they all stayed alive?
