I thought I would check out South Beach while I was down for school, after a week in Ft. Lauderdale watching the news I decided I could live without it.

What were you in training for?

I was there for Bentley. Same location as you.

Where in Mass? I used to sail some out of Marblehead.... now more out of Newport.
Down by the canal, it's all ponds, cranberry bogs and oceanfront so FEMA painted a broad brush.

You ever go up the river to Battleship Cove?...Typsy Seagull is a fun place.

No I never did. But with a name like that it must be fun.

Nice hearing good stories of people getting through this mess safely.

Thanks for the updates

Maybe I missed it on RDP, but I was surprised to not see a mention of the female reporter’s microphone protector, a condom. I say props to her. Crazy bad situation and she made it work.

JF - So that’s it? WTF?? The girl did great. Although, I’m still not sure how well the Spoken Voice travels through a condom. Never had to worry about that. But, I remain most concerned about the survivors and those who didn’t and their families and friends.

Wow. Looks like you guys held up pretty well... how the roof damages in your neighborhood?

Crazy Florida weather. Looks like a nice day in your photos. 😎
Don’t know yet, These are from my parents neighbors who returned and from what they have said, all looks pretty good from the outside.

Seems the houses on the same side of the canal of my parents didn’t flood with the storm surge as their sea wall is about 30” and the house is another 4’. But the homes across the canal did flood as they sit lower to the water. The canal is wider than most at 240’ across, could have made a little difference.

We head out Sunday driving and bringing a trailer with generators, gas, water. Going to check everything out and clean up. As of now things could have been way worse for them.

FEMA requires me to have it in Mass on the water. 10 years ago they remapped my area and about 8 feet of my backyard edge is in a higher risk zone and that tripled the cost. It could be my Mortgage company requiring it I forget, I know when I saw the new map I called my insurance company and they looked into an appeal and came back with nothing can be done.
was building a house on cape cod about 6 years ago, and I had to build the elevation 12" above the high water mark to get a permit. After permit, and starting the build they raised the current definition of sea level by 1 ft, and now a single column of my house was in the VE zone causing me to need to buy flood insurance ( per the mortgage) for 11K a year. This insurance only covered a maximum of 200K in damages.

I would think all the houses in Florida probably have the same issue that even if they have insurance, it maxes out at a certain level.

So overall we got lucky in Julington Creek. Winds stayed low, 40 gusting to 60. Lost of clean up about 41 bags so far. We’re still getting the storm surge. The water has been getting height than during the storm. So the dock has been going underwater a few hours before and after. I’m thinking it will stop in a few days.

A bunch of big NorTech & Mystic CC that got tossed around. But overall I think damage is pretty minimal to these.

Predigest Bitch. There are a lot of unfortunate folks that are underserved, poor or sick of ALL colors, especially in Southern States that needs assistance also. 🖕

My dad and stepmom just got word their house was saved. They said they got lucky, since their side of the block was built up higher then the other side that got damage. Looks like no water inside the house and the only issue is damage to the lanai (Entire lanai will need to be replaced). Told them that in minor in the overall scheme of things. They decided to postpone going to FL until November. With the Ft Meyers airport still closed and the community still stressed (supply chain, getting around), they figured it was best to postpone.

Great news for your family. Best to those that are not as fortunate. 👍

I'm glad to hear things are moving forward for the folks in South Florida. For people who aren't familiar with hurricanes and storms of this magnitude, the amount of water moved around is unbelievable. I just got off the phone with my Mom, and her place on the East Coast of Central Florida has water damage. Their condominium is oceanfront on the fourth floor, and was nowhere near where this storm initially made landfall. The winds and rain from this particular storm were enough to bow their windows and window frames inward, allowing rain inside. Pretty amazing what mother nature is capable of doing.

I don’t mean this in bad taste. But when homes are moved 100s of yards, does the state have to come out and re survey properties before you can rebuild?

Will there be just a large amount of property that people just walk away from?

When we went to Louisiana that last time we went to the area hit by Katrina, I believe that was the storm. It was so sad to see how the community faired a decade after the storm. 75% empty lots weeds high as can be. Trees in the middle of the street/sidewalks. 10% original builds saved from the storm. 10% rebuilt and 5% rebuild started but people just left as they realized it was not going to be the community that it once was or did not have the funds to complete. It truly saddening to see what it had become.
