so Far we haven’t had any issues with it during a race. Knock on wood lol. I had fox set mine up for a good happy medium so I can hit the oh shit button if needed, and that is the same as my race mode. But on a course like the Cali 300 or the mint I’d leave in that mode. But on a course like Parker, Laughlin, silver state and V2R I race in my softer setting and use the oh shit button.
Right on ya keep running it if ya have it why not! The Oh shit button is pretty rad I use mine a lot, the only thing I dont like it that it last for a few seconds after. I wish it was just like a 1 second push but it seems like it lasts for 3-4 seconds after ya hit it.

i think he understand cars shouldnt have an oil leak? also understand you should be able to shift while not moving.
I'm not gonna argue about the shifting and oil leaking, I was just playing devils advocate about this guy in particular. He's done some other small videos, and is active on the Speed FB pages, he doesn't come off like the sharpest tool in the shed.

I don't know the guy, but it seems like flying airplanes and teaching people to fly airplanes is a tiny bit harder than driving around on dirt.

You don't need to be sharp to shift, see leaks, or drop it off 4 times.

What IQ should one have to own a off road toy? Maybe they should add this question to the order form.

Yikes. Does buyer's remorse really need to result in personal insults?

anyone want to buy my speed deposit????😆😆.
I’m not interested in loading up and driving to Havasu twice (drop off/pickup) every time for warranty work. Thats $800 in gas towing + 16 hours of drive time (4hrs each way minimum) + hotel if I don’t turn and burn.
So $1000 in costs not including lost work time for every service issue at minimum. That’s not including whatever off-road trips get screwed because the car doesn’t work or breaks.
Speed better get their shit together and open Anaheim but I have friends in NorCal, Colorado and Texas who are screwed with no “support network.”

I don't have buyers remorse if you're referring to me, but Bryce has posted quite a bit of info/reviews/comments/videos etc.......This is where my opinion comes from.

We can take one part of this video and figure out, he banged/leveraged the shift linkage with a rock, why not just take the one bolt out? Or did he not carry any tools?

I'm also not going to swing on the nuts of Speed, this stuff is disappointing no doubt, and there's also one other owner who is having the same issues with shifting, not sure where he's at with how many trips to Speed in Havasu yet.

I think you make a good point. Most SxS owners are just regular guys. We all aren't off-road racers. My skills can normally get stuff fixed and back to the trailer/dock/home. But I possess no special skills.

If a transmission is so complicated to shift "properly" that you need to be a nascar racer to drive it, its not built for the public, period.

I don't think the ~16,000 dealer cars will all be purchased by race car drivers.

I agree, but I would hope that most of the SXS buyers could at least turn a wrench or trouble shoot a little bit.

I've said this before, I bought this for my wife, she is NEVER going to be able figure this shifting thing out if ALL of them are having this issue, and that's a problem. I always just figured it wasn't an issue and she would just be driving it in 2nd, which is the "all around" gear to be in, but if she can't get into park or neutral or 2nd, I'm fucked, especially if she takes it out by her self and her friends.

Sean has already said it's going to take some skill to shift on the fly with the way the dogs work, who knows, maybe this guy, and the other guy I saw with the same issues has fucked up their trans by not shifting on the fly correctly, I really don't know.

The way the trans shifts, is very similar to a sequential Fortin, or Albins, they are not super user friendly, and there is definitely a learning curve. I've also had to shut of a car to get it into gear, it's a PIA, and you would hope a $20K+ transmission would shift like butter, but they don't.

I completely agree what dirtslinger has mentioned above.

I don't know this guy and it looks like none of us do here with almighty RDP brain trust on staff, so with that said it's pure speculation of what skills he possesses or not, he seems like a nice kid just trying to share his experience with the SPEED car.
However, I'd be upset as well with the oil leak not being addressed with 3-4 trips to the shop, and a Radiator leak, the speakers, who would speakers in an off road car

The trans issue though is all on SPEED for building a trans that is clearly not user-friendly for joe-p-public, it's the only one to come to market where it's not for any human to get in start and go, it will need some sort of explanation and coaching.

Maybe an automatic would have been a better start and then introducing a sequential trans for the racing circuit idk.
Maybe the SPEED trans might be more user friendly due to it having centrifugal clutch, I won't know til I drive one 😁 ohh wait that might be a while

I have a sequential trans in my 3300# dual sport car, nobody in my group can jump in my car and take off without instruction, shifting is another challenge lol.

IMO sequential tranny's take some seat time to get the timing and feel too get it right, every route you take through the dunes or open desert can be a challenge, just coming up on an obstacle at speed then slamming on the brakes almost coming to a complete stop dropping it in the right gear quickly (with authority lol) to keep the momentum going and take off again takes some practice lol

This is what I was referring to, is your clutch sequential or Torque converter? They both have their differences and challenges.

But, he should still be able to get into a gear when stopped, thats a definite issue. Could also be that has the trans loaded up on a hill, or something, and without a clutch it's not wanting to come out of gear, I think we've all experienced that.

Really who knows, could also be a completely shitty Trans, or linkage.

All of my sequential trans cars have been clutch, I'm sure a TC would be nice though.
We'll know in time when piles of trans cases are in piles behind the shop lol

I have a fortin h pattern in my dual sport and being a dog ear box it is kind of that way. If i walk out into the garage right now and try and put it in each gear with the car off there will usually be one sometimes two gears it doesnt want to go into, if i roll it foward a foot it will go into those gears fine and now maybe not one of the others. While driving if i come to a stop having it in first gear clutch in and try and go straight to reverse sometimes it wont and i just have to release the clutch while in neutral and push it back in and that moves the dogs enough to drop right in.
Not sure how it works on the speed car without a 3rd pedal maybe @SeanRitchie can elaborate on that more.

I’m trying to decide what I would remove, I assume there’s something like a 10 MM bolt holding that clevis bracket on those splines but that whole thing looks like it is cast into the case. what’s the pin connection that looks like a rivet end? unless there’s a cotter pin on the other side I don’t have a tool to grab that end . That’s just a screenshot I took from the video not my finger

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the thing you're referring to as a rivet is an allen bolt with a nut on the backside. I'd remove that and take that heim joint out, and then try and shift the car.

The obvious thing would be to take the linkage off and try and get it into gear, BUT, if this is the 4th Time going into the shop in less than a few hundred miles, I’m also VERY likely going to take a BFH or whatever else I can grab to the car.

So you have to have off road experience to own it ? That’s not going to work out good than beacause A LOT of non off-roaders go out and buy toys like this. 🤷🏼‍♂️
I have been very observant on this thread. According to a few select individuals, you must own a boat to be on RDP, and now you must have off road experience to own a speed.

FYI

The boat, should be a yes, why else would you be on River Daves Place?

The offroad experience, should be a no brainer, for any brand. You should probably know how to turn a wrench if you're going to boat, or own an offroad rig.

What he understands is marketing…by saying this car is “not for a novice”, it gives Ricky Racer a boner cause he sure in the hell ain’t no novice

I'm gonna play devils advocate, not because I'm waiting on my Speed car, but because this dude, from all of his videos and pics has never been an offroad guy. Every thing he posts comes off as he's never owned or driven offroad nor owned a car.
That being said, this didn't inspire me to own my deposit.

These cars need to be designed so anyone from no experience to lots of experience can drive them. RG and the team had a great idea with the 3 speed, but I think they are going to regret the shifting "on the fly" design they went with. I would bet more than a majority of people that are purchasing a Speed UTV have minimal experience shifting gears with this type of set up. Just setting themselves up for warranty claims.

The bigger glaring problem is the guy brought it to Speed 3 times and they have not been able to fix some leaks or other small issues. This is where having a dealer network and a bigger pool of mechanics to work on them would be helpful.

I read on another forum it is not only this guy having issues with the transmission and shifting into gears. Sounds like the idle is high and not allowing the car to shift easily into gear from the start. My guess is the secondary clutch is spinning in neutral when it should not be and that is the cause of the hard shift into gear from a stop. This issue happens on other brands which could be bad rollers, bad bearing, or the clutches not being aligned.

Being the beta testers for Speed with these initial 100 or so cars is going to wear the patience of some of the owners.

I saw 1 other person post about having trouble with the shifting, I wonder if there are more, and if so, how many.

Like I said, this is going to be major issue for me if the wife can't shift into forward and reverse easily.

Great points all.

The problem with Beta testers is that they are the "spokesmen" for the brand at this point. Just look at the positive responses from/for the new Can-Am because of their "Beta-Testers", like Travis Pastrana.

Secondly, why on earth, when you have a blank sheet of paper to begin with, do you design an overly complicated transmission for a consumer product like a UTV?

Who know how many others have issues. We are only seeing a few owners that have been open about their experiences and active on social media. The other owners may not be on social media.

In a few months we shall see if this is a small issue for a few or a major problem.

Holy crap. If i were speed I’d take care of his issues asap. Maybe even put him on “staff”
Speed is probably thinking damn… we sold early to one of those Karens…

But if I were a person in line or on the fence I’m glad they sold to a Karen…

You of all people no doubt understand the possibility intentions from the beginning Speed UTV will have much smaller market share compared to all major manufacturers.
Compare the point i’m trying to make as you yourself ordered and patiently waited for your Skater built to your specifications. On any day & any lake how many Skaters you going to see? The ownership, transportation, maintenance etc of a Skater requires an education in itself just to own that boat. SXS also far from a product for the masses as cars & pick -up trucks etc.
Gotta say your Skater build thread was interesting from start to finish, the trailer alone was incredible. Many of us know damn well you earned it.

Thanks for the kind words. And you're 100% correct. I didn't do the Tres class, however I had some hands on instruction from a long time Skater employee/rigger who has many years in HP cats. As a matter of fact, he left Skater and has his own repair facility in Michigan now. Also had AJ in the boat and he helped a bunch. Lots to learn in these things.

But, a Skater or MTI or DCB are typically not a first time boats owners boat. It was my 7th or 8th boat. Even so, a different animal all together.

Are Speeds cars like that? A UTV for a first time owner? Heck, who am I to say. This entire 4-5 year period has been nothing short of fascinating.

Well let's think about this for a moment...

Being on RDP? I'm pretty sure most anyone is welcome here, especially the people that are trying to learn!

Being IN a boat on the water??

Now that is a Whole different story.

And it's the same story as people off roading, with zero experience.

Dirt or water, it's best to learn Better you head out there.

I don't think you would be able to get it in gear by removing the shifting linkage. My guess is the secondary clutch is spinning at idle. This makes it super hard to shift it into gear for any brand UTV.
