My son was notified that there will be rolling black outs in Chico Ca today from 5-9pm… Thanks PG&E.

Take a look at the CA ISO charts an hour after sunset… thats when things get really tight.

It’s interesting to watch the forecasted demand jump around from the different screen shots.

Edit. Supply at 4:43

I’m kind of curious what the make up of import power is? Since California prides itself on renewables and things that are green? By the way isn’t that 50% of natural gas considered a fossil fuel?

There have been many alerts just like this all freaking day… but now we hit Level 3…
688AD017-8157-45D2-9E73-C8A5BBD29AD2.png

So please explain why we have so many alerts, and “Maximum Conservation Efforts are Urged”
If the grid is built to withstand the hottest day of the year?

Or maybe its not?????

Or why should CA rate payers have to live uncomfortably, because of the lack of CA ISO grid assetts to support the load that is obviously needed, especially when your paying the highest rates.

These are todays problems, guestimating less that 10% EV adoption rate, where will the grid be 3 summers from now, when you hit 20% adoption rate??? Hmmm any Nat Gas new power plants being permitted in CA, or being re powered? To help solve some of the problems that are obviously going to get worse?

If I was a CA voter/resident, I would be asking these questions to my elected officials. But I solved that problem.

Yeah, my son is not to happy right now… rolling black outs and 112 degrees in Chico.. uggg.

The traders buy and sell power in the imports or exports. Natural gas is a big player. The new natural gas plants can start up quickly and shut dow very quickly. The western states trade power all the time. Transmission line capacity can be a bottle neck.

Desert Center is becoming filled with Solar. Solid work relying on shit that only makes full power for 5-6 hrs a day.

In the mean time they are charging me $10 a month to dismantle San Onofre because eco-terrorist's said so.
Every utility power plant from day 1 collects money to return the land back to normal. This has been in place at least 60 years.

Is a EV considered a major appliance ? Serious question. I guess I mean that in Newsum description.

That would depend if you're charging it on 120V @ 20Amps -- not so much, or 240V @ 50Amps --- You betcha

Whatever you do, don’t sign up to let the power company control your thermostat.

From today in Colorado:

HELL NO.
All I can say is, "Duhhhhhh". Read the fine print knuckleheads, you sign up for the cheapest plan w/o reading the details. You should be lying in a pool of sweat. Its been "warm" here, but my Xcel is delivering, haha.

I have always wondered that as well.
As I tell my kids, don’t overpromise and under deliver and all should be OK. Thinking it has to do with property purchase or labor.

Don’t you work for them?
Yes. Along with my employee discount I signed up for the radio to be attached to my condenser. My power can be cut whenever but I get an additional discount because of it.

Been here almost 9yrs only been shut off a few times. Longest was like 3hrs tonight it was less than an hour.

Should have never been shut off. Newsome just extended Diablo for several more years. This is the power needed. Solar and wind is not going to get us there.

The $10 charge came on my bill 3 years ago. Its a Local Fee in addition to...

So did the state of California turn the street lights off on the freeways and major highways?

It has been in rates for years. People signed up for the program to be shut off to save money. After this year watch the new Rate Case come! Spend billions that will go into your bills for 20 years. When the utility spends money the rate payers pay the utility back through rates. Most people do not really understand how a utility makes money.

They were most likely not signed up for the demand response program.

Friday is going to hurt.
Highs in coastal Carlsbad are forecasted to be 95.
That will put some pressure on the grid.

Pretty interesting as old air conditioners get replaced it lowers demand like all new appliance. In my area the air conditioner companies are out in force replacing older units.

Not replacing older AC’s by Friday. While I agree newer appliances and AC draw less power, it takes time to switch those out.

A lot of homes in Carlsbad don’t have AC. It’s not the IE where everyone has 1 if not 2. lol.

It would be interesting to compare new AC units against the addition of EVs and now electric appliances and heaters. Basically take an annual audit of units replaced vs new electrical loads added to the grid.

LED lighting has made a large dent in demand. Except for the architectural stuff, tape light etc isn’t very efficient lol.

Demand is still trending up, and the capacity of the grid is not. Should make for a fun next decade.

Well, if you just look at the CA ISO peak load history, it gives you a pretty good idea of past peak loads.

Yes, LED had a huge impact in energy reduction.

Because thats goes against the green agenda.
Policy/Regulations are dictating broad use of Battery Energy Storage to meet the future needs.
But as far as I know, no one has ran the math, on exactly how much energy storage will be needed, and exactly what those costs are.
Most importantly, how it will impact the rate payers.

WHY… Because if they did, No one would vote for it, or the politician pushing for it.
