Seems odd folks in Lahaina didn't have those buildings insured, or their homes, but I haven't a clue what the story is there.
My wife and I went to Maui for a couple of days, on two trips, went to Lahaina maybe once. Spent the vast majority of the time in Kona, always preferring the big island more.
I can’t speak for that actual town, but by my observations on other islands a lot of stuff is not built to code when we are talking residential dwellings.

I don’t know if I was underinsured by my home when I bought in 2010 had about 400k for structure and when I called back in June it was about 600k which wasn’t nearly enough for a 3500sq ft home in OC but I managed to get it increase to 840k and the agent told me there was an additional 20% for cost increases built into the policy so she said I would be good for anything up to a million. I’m guessing most people are underinsured given recent inflation and the cost of things right now.
After already suffering a loss, I watch my values closely. About a year ago I called my agent and compiled a list of justifications of what I thought might not be sufficiently covered.
Right now it's tough with inflation and rapidly rising material and labor costs.

Even in 2010, I was rather amazed how much it cost, but I'm forced to admit, the house we designed and had built was leaps and bounds better than the original. In our case we used Personal Property monies to fund the extras we wanted in the house after doing extensive budgeting for what we felt if would cost to replace those things we NEEDED replaced.
We felt it wiser to invest that money into the home versus buying crap we no longer needed and would be rendered worthless in a few years.

The biggest uncovered loss was the landscaping. Insurance companies don't pay SHIT for replacing that or my destroyed avocado grove since I didn't have it insured separately. As it turned out, a grove with nothing left with stumps enjoyed about a 25% recovery all on it's own and that's plenty of trees for today's watering and our enjoyment.

As for the rest of the landscaping, mommy nature is amazing with her tenacity to recover and we bought some more and I provided the labor.
The landscaping required to cover some slopes to satisfy the county, we hired that out as I was to busy on the house.

I've seen that too, especially in rural areas, but I'm not that familiar with Lahaina, but I'd think they shops would be insured. I do realize some of these folks are pretty laid back "What me worry" types, I wish them well.

Drag you lost the house the in Escondido, T. Both fires flames came within 10,000 feet, burning to the end of Cloverdale Road, then climbed the hill to the new houses up on the ridge behind OG Elementary. Not a Firefighter in sight. They opened the fire gates so I was able to sneak back in the second time, put sprinklers on the roof same as the first time. Winds blew a 1/4 of my comp shingles off prior to the first fire. Scary for sure. Glad you two came out ok. Fire Sux.

Why were they underinsured while living in an area prone to fires ? I know a couple of my neighbors who were, and had bragged about their lower rates, rolled the dice and lost. Then promptly called the news channel so they could go live on the 6pm news and cry about the mean ole insurance company. In some areas people may have been upside down, but doubt that's the case in Malibu.
A couple of neighbors up here sold their lots and moved on, but it was far more psychologically motivated than financially.

Malibu in particular has a wide range of home owners. You have people who have owned since the 50s, those who have inherited properties in the 70-90s and then the “current” owners which I’d classify as people who purchased at market value.

A lot of the old school Malibu people were/are blue collar folks who paid 100-300k for something that was/is worth 2-3 million. Values obviously rapidly increased but a lot of people just maintained their standard of living, Including insurance.

We knew a lot of well off people who were valuing their properties at 3-400k while in reality they were worth 3 million plus.

Something is seriously wrong if there really is only one guy with the ability to push the siren button.
At some point you just sound the sirens. If nothing else it gets people outside to look around and see what’s coming.
Thats how it is....I was still living there when the missile incident happened...the moronic governor couldn't put out a public retraction because he couldn't figure out his password... When major shit happens cell phones stop working there...they just get overloaded. After that the flow of info is spotty and chaotic. I'm surprised he resigned...but in reality there are people there who would physically hurt him if they could find him right now. He's easily the most hated man in Hawaii right now (rightfully so)

You guys on the mainland knew more than we did for at least 45 min to an hour. I specifically remember after a couple min of panic, my then GF now wife running out the door to try to make it to her family's home, and me not being able to call anyone. I sent a snapchat (which as I referenced before somehow usually works when shit hits the fan there), it was a brief goodbye to friends and family. (We had a warning of like 17 min to impact) I grabbed my dogs, walked out on my back lanai with a beer and watched what I thought was my last sunrise/morning sun. The Hawaii government is CORRUPT and INEPT at every step of their bloated bureaucratic mess, and its so ingrained that its never going to change....wash rinse repeat...

I'm fairly confident that even the penny pinching old timers ended up with sufficient funds from the land value alone to buy a nice mobile somewhere 😁 ;)

In fact, highly likely whoever bought those old places were looking at all or at least a high percentage teardown if it's advantageous for obtaining permits as in many beach communities.

I know it sounds strange, other than losing our pet cat and the family photos, immediately following the fire I hadn't felt so liberated in damn near 45 years.
All that accumulated crap and junk, that SHIT we just couldn't bring ourselves to tossing, was GONE, Whoosh, just like that.
It felt amazing, like I'd shed a thousand pound backpack. My wife and I each owned ONE small Go Bag. Everything we'd accumulated in our 50-60 year old lives (She's a young chicky 🥰) was liberated from our existence.
So weird that just yesterday I was looking for a small 7" block plane I just knew I had, even my wife could identify it and assured me it was real --- nope, that was a 16 year old lingering memory, bought a new one today.
Old habits die hard, because I look at my shop and storage sheds and f*ck me, it's all back, just as it was. 😖

Forgot about that day. The wife called me from Walmart looking for advise of where to shelter. Told her my thoughts and said hope to see you at home soon as I looked out off the back deck to the west watching for the missiles. Good times for sure. Jawaii government never disappoints!!!

Oh for sure there was money to be made. But there were/are a lot of people who just wanted to live out their lives in Malibu. The moment you sell you’re done unless you have a serious income backing you up.

To give an idea of how much it has exploded my parents bought 4 acres at the top of Las Flores for 425k in 1996. That same home with (my guess) a 1 million dollar remodel sold for almost 5 million. That’s damn near 10x in 20 years lol.

I think everyone thinks of LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Hawaii, Florida etc as just the place where the ballers play. But there are still (or at least there were) middle class Americans who owned property and worked in the area.

My whole home neighborhood is 90% occupied by us older farts just staying because we this is where we want to be. We've been here for 30, several around me for closer to 50 years.
So yes, I do have compassion for those who were forced to relocate.
There's a lesson there for everybody to dig into those papers and run realistic numbers.

This is the guy who delayed water for hours....he's one of the leftists who push "equity." And now the state has "reassigned him" just like they did with the nuke button boy.

"DLNR is re-deploying First Deputy of the Commission on Water Resource Management (CWRM), Kaleo Manuel, to a different DLNR division," the press release said. "The purpose of this deployment is to permit CWRM and the Department to focus on the necessary work to assist the people of Maui recover from the devastation of wildfires."

That lesson was taught in Malibu.

I don’t mean it to be Woe is me. But a lot of older couples got displaced. On its face, of course they should have maintained insurance values but in reality it’s still a bummer.

The sad part is them selling what could be generational wealth 25 cents on the dollar to go find a place to live out their “golden years”. That’s my fear for Hawaii. Poor planning yes, but another death nail in the middle class.

Clowns should be hung.
When it's all said and one the ineptitude of New York Liberal Josh Green, the former Maui Emergency Director, and the DLNR water manager for Maui will be impossible to hide. Josh Green should immediately resign but he's learned how good the grift can be from his predecessors. There is a complete lack of accountability on this and its disgusting.

Entire families wiped out....and sadly yes many many children. This didn't have to happen on the scale it did... Every time I see that clown back acting giddy stating numbers like he did back with covid makes my blood boil... I've had to bite my tongue as of late, what is actually going on over there on the ground is worse than many know. Fuck josh green

This goes to the white house. The dems lack of caring and seeking control. I think there is more to this and many dont want to think our government can be so cold and callus. Covid has taught us something but more need to open thier eyes. We need a cleansing of the corrupt government . This goes to greedy big business too. Big pharma, the media.

If you’ve been to any tourist trap that’s been around for 60+ years, they are all one spark from burning down.

I took a quick peek at Zillow in the area. Nothing I can afford. 😉

Talked to my friend over there last night. If you had plans to stay anywhere past Lahaina you are advised not to go. All of the markets like Safeway in Lahaina, Napili Market all closed. the Napili Market parking lot they're using as a command center. His son is a fireman stationed right behind Napili Market. Time Market is only open for a few ours a day with limited food. He said if you're dead set on going, stay on the East end of the island, Whilaia to Kehei. Don't go to the beach, locals are frowning at tourist enjoying themselves on the beach while the recovery efforts are still going on. You're definitely going to get the stink eye. National Guard was deployed checking on everyone trying to go into Lahaina to Kapalua. He's stationed at the private airport above Kapalua. They're receiving 40-50 incoming private planes and helicopters a day bringing in supplies. Right before he left for the mainland 3 weeks ago they were thinking about closing that airport. Not now, that airport has been the only way they can get transportation of supplies, by air when all roads going West was closed. Mahalo first responders. that's a pic of Jackass's chopper!

Said a lot when crazy Mazie was grinning ear to ear to meet him on then tarmac....she's a clown as well, and couldn't care less about the people lost or suffering.

For those wanting to help out here’s three of the recommended charities from my wholesaler over there.
I’m going to go for the day in October to help out at a couple fundraisers.

Last flight to OGG (April of this year) I could read, quite clearly, a spray painted FJB on an old building. Might have been off the 311. I wonder if they got that cleaned up before his majesty arrived? ;)

As usual the reports vary huge by outlet. Fox torches Puddin head in the opening story. CBS, CNN, NBC bury the story on what amounts to the back page with no negative comments about him.
Libs own the media. Gonna make for a tough 2024.

Biden joking about almost losing his vette in a home fire was disrespectful.
People lost lives; their keiki, kapuna, homes, businesses, animals, friends, family, lifetimes of memories etc…and that oxygen thief cracks jokes then sleeps. I never thought my distaste for him could be any greater…but he showed there is no depth to his soulless actions. He showed that he has zero care…in a deeply disrespectful way.

I'm just gonna leave this here...

The problem is that there is no money in climate change being a hoax. Somehow taxing the $hit out of us will solve the fake problem.

Alex Jones. The only outlet telling the story of the hundreds of cars directed to, and then people corralled and trapped in their cars down on Front Street on the orders of the Police. Those who obeyed, died. Those who disobeyed orders and fled, lived. Front street and all of Lahaina was/is a crime scene. Was it processed? No. The first area cleared, blocked off, and the first street washed and scrubbed, was the Front Street Kill zone.. His drone footage is the only shot I have seen that shows clearly the mass of vehicles packed in on Front street, and is very visually explanatory. Intent does not matter in that It does not change the facts of how this happened. Ironic and sad, the only people who escaped before having flee the vehicles and go into the ocean were the ones that refused orders and fled on foot or drove around the barricades. The rest, perished. And not from a natural disaster.

Shelters are closed now. All residents are in hotels, Airbb, or with family. I am sure some left for other islands. Markets are open per Maui News. Pretty much all power to large hotels in West Maui is on. Nearly every hotel is Maui is full, either with previous reservations for folks arriving in mid-September, or locals. Bypass road is open with restrictions, 24/7. Huge overall Hawaii hotel reservations were cancelled to other islands.

Let's be real people. So. In a prior video, Fish says 3000+ enrolled in Lahaina primary school. Ok. Baseline.
Surviving Parents have accounted for 1000 students. Do the math. We call this a clue..
