This is all very disturbing to me on so many levels, We as common sense people have got to get control of our leaders. ALL OF THEM . Politicians that have never set foot in areas that they control ( forest management, water manegment , resource mgmt etc) making life , death and ability to prosper decisions for the rest of us ? We just sunk a beer brand because we banded together, we have ghe power ! What is holding us back? Put a DATE on the calendar I am so ready.

Hawaiian Electric Soars After Statement: Power Lines "De-Energized" When Fire Started

teaser image
"Jeff Bezos, you got what you wanted. Oprah, you got what you wanted. — F*** us all over".

MON AUG 28, AT 5:50 AM

Hawaiian Electric outlines important facts about what happened on Aug. 8:

  • A fire at 6:30 a.m. (the "Morning Fire") appears to have been caused by power lines that fell in high winds.
  • The Maui County Fire Department responded to this fire, reported it was "100% contained," left the scene and later declared it had been "extinguished."
  • At about 3 p.m., a time when all of Hawaiian Electric's power lines in West Maui had been de-energized for more than six hours, a second fire (the "Afternoon Fire") began in the same area.
  • The cause of the devastating Afternoon Fire has not been determined.

So much for kicking the dog.
Who’s the government going to blame now for all their mishandling of this disaster.

Just because heco claims something doesn’t mean it’s true…wouldn’t trust their claims at all…they are scrambling

Anyone has any relatives that have businesses in the tourist industry, they’re going to be in for very hard times. I learned that nearly all west Maui hotels are now occupied by displaced
Locals, and this could be for 6+ months. Hotels in other areas are booked, or jacked prices to $700 a night+. Saw an article that even Mommas Fish House is down 50%. Locals do not use snorkel boats, etc. , so Most are nearly out of business bad situation. I anticipate many will just move to other islands and to Las Vegas.

If you'd have ventured into our neighborhood following it's wildfire destruction to take pictures or satisfy your "Lookie-Loo" curiosity, you'd have discovered immediately that you were most unwelcome.
We guarded those ashes with far more vigilance then we'd ever guarded our viable possessions, and even more so, we were guarding the privacy of our sufferings and the sanctity of the now sacred ruins that represented our entire lives to that point.

I'm just sharing that for your consideration.

Blocked off walled off, under guard. No fly zone. Bummer that includes the homeowners from their own property. While "Cleanup?" underway. Which equals destruction of evedence, of peoples remaning personal property in the burn area. That's theft. Burglary of a residence. We shoot Mutherfuckers for that here. But when the government does it, it's fiine, just fine. That's Bullshit. Neighborhood watch, yes. This,? WTF. Coverup.

Also, denied rehab, residence in undestroyed homes, and no residents can start reconstruction or rebuilding for 2 years.

They are idiots in that first video. Houses catch fire a mile from the brush fire in the middle of a neighborhood, how could that happen, must be the government🙄. It's called embers idiot, that car could have been driving and the air filter could have caught fire and they pulled over and jumped out. Hate to break it to you but car fires and brush fires have been melting aluminum and glass for decades. Morons

My brother's patrol car, it started in the air filter after an ember got in there.

More melted aluminum (it melts at about 1200°) in Paradise Ca from the camp fire. Must be more government fuckery because brush fires and forest fires only burn at 5-600°.

Common sense seems to have left the building.

When north shore Kauai flooded in 2018, it took them 18 months to reopen a main road. During that time, non resident owners were not allowed to visit their homes.

I can't imagine how long it will take before those poor people can even think about rebuilding. 😕

I would like to preface this by saying I mean no disrespect for the families effected by this tragedy, but I have a question: On social media I keep seeing posts/videos about how 1,000's people are still missing. I see posts about how 2,000 children are missing from Maui schools. But I never see posts or videos from distraught parents and family members wondering where their loved ones are at. I mean if 2,000 kids are missing 3 weeks after the fires, why isn't there complete crazy outrage from parents wanting to know where their kids are. Why aren't school officials reporting about all of the missing kids. Is this just BS from those on social media that are gas lighting us to believe that thousands of children are missing? It's just not adding up.

Or, did entire families burn in their homes? No one to look for them. Like many cultures, many Hawaiians have 3 generations living under one roof.

Yes, it’s complete BS. Any more questions?

Sadly I believe this is why you don’t hear families out looking for other members. Whole families have passed away in the fires. I have heard this elsewhere but not sure where exactly.

Multiple places...including direct from a FF on island. Additionally Kapuna abandoned by the state workers..some allegedly only had porcelain teeth found. Fire was hot enough that unfortunately many will never be found, there is nothing left...listed as missing. I truly hope that the state doesn't use that designation to steal (land) from them...but I'm not holding my breath. A lot of what's gone on is abhorrent.

2 weeks of poking him to leave his vacation and go to Maui.

Too bad Hawaii isn’t a swing state, he would have been there in 48 hours.

Wrong, he would have been landing when the fires broke out

It's a land grab. Unfortunately Hawaii is heavily democrat/liberal. The government that has the power to give you what you want also has the power to take it away. After working there for the past 13 years I got a first hand look at the state of things.

I got hired in 2011 to go there 2-3 times a year to handle an 18 unit condo complex. Most of it is PM work and sometimes emergency calls. If I get a call today, I'm on a plane first thing in the morning. Very simple. They happily pay me with less than a 24 response time. The locals would take 2-3 weeks to get someone out there. Not because they can't but because they don't care. It's a sad state of affairs for the locals, but not unexpected.

The entire thing stinks of fraud and malfeasance. But it comes as no surprise.

That's a bunch of BS to do this to those people of Maui.

Who are they, what are they doing exactly, and why ??

Unless you personally have experienced a loss of this type and magnitude, then you are clueless of how complex the recovery process is.
The diverseness and magnitude of this particular almost unimaginable tragedy only serve to hinder the already extremely complex recovery.

This dumb bitch is ranting overgeneralizations completely oblivious to the myriad of complex realities involved.

This isn't ONE case, it's thousands of individual cases, each facing their own specific hurdles and resolution, in addition to all sharing common issues such as zoning, a new master plan being re-created and building codes reviewed, updated and amended with regards to new fire codes.
The creation of these codes and building requirements also adds to the delays in settling insurance claims as the amounts of various riders are affected by these code changes.
It's no secret that the local government of Maui is struggling under the weight of the magnitude of this event and it's unreasonable too expect otherwise.

Individually, you've got some who inherited homes from ancestors, some not insured, some who never having reviewed their policies are woefully underinsured, and others frustrated and chopping at the bit because of other delays as the "Hawaii Time" clock creeps slowly around it's dial as opposing sides state their cases for the new master plan that's holding up the commercial sector.

The poor will suffer, the wealthy will recover and many of the wealthy will prosper at the ill fortune of others. That's not a conspiracy, it's real life and tragic events of this magnitude amplify that X 1,0000.

When our neighborhood burned to the ground in '07, one of the most frustrating aspects was in the aftermath, listening to all the self-proclaimed experts on TV ranting away, completely clueless as to the realities of the backstage truth.
I was honestly impressed by the ability of San Diego County to step up provide amazing assistance in walking us through the permit process and waving all fees.

It was also maddening to hear a neighbor on camera for the 5PM news bad mouthing their insurance company, blaming them for being underinsured when a few months prior they were bragging how much they were saving by reducing their replacement cost estimate.

I warn you, spend adequate time reviewing your homeowners policy, I reviewed ours recently as I do now every year and that process even involved a phone conversation with my builder.
You might just discover you are woefully underinsured and it's better to discover this before a fire, then the shock of the realization after.
