They can take the back road to kaanapali , it's a hike but I belive it's open . It's the 340 or kahaekii hwy from Wailuku , run that north it turns into the 30 or Honoapiilani which then will take them to kaanapali.

Stay put from what I hear. The only other way to Kaanapali besides through lahaina is around the road from Hana. I would not want to be on that road with traffic and unpredictable winds. It narrows down to 1 lane.
Hana is on the south east end of the island , total opposite direction.

Now I'm starting to get worried. Are you in maui? If you can post on rdp, and we can't reach friends

The majority of those buildings and older homes in "historic cities" in HI are single wall tongue and groove construction. They go fast once they are on fire, and spread structure to structure quick. I'm saddened for those who called it home, but I know the people will be resilient, depend on each other, and rebuild the best they can. Hopefully greed from the LH land owners doesn't change it forever after this.

What caused this? Power lines? I know they have been getting hit with heavy winds from a hurricane to the south
That side of the Island can get very dry. I have seen a couple fires over by the small airport by Kanapali but nothing like this.

Just spoke to my cousin who is a MFD grad, and is FD on another island now. His exact words were "they boys are working hard up there" and they appreciate the support. I'll post if I get any more updates.

My son was going in 3 weeks. Vrbo 1 Mile from Lahaina. Cancelled earlier. Doesn't even know if the house is standing.
Horrible.
Hope this thing burns out soon

So many reasons why I decided not too.

The vibe there is not something conducive to a vacation at this point. Its sad. My wife here is crying.

It was 1500$ a night at a five star resort. I cant imagine none of those employees being impacted. I dont need them worried about home life and taking care of me and family.

Its just too expensive to “wing it”.

Im pissed, sad, sick. My first real vacation in 15 years. But its just a vacation for me. People have lost lives.
Solid points

It was electrical, he'll find out exactly where when he gets home. We speculated electrical or homeless when the fire first started. Homelessness on Maui is gettin' bad. He pointed out areas you would never know was an encampment because of the high brush. He pointed to an area with a non trespassing sign down a dirt road. He told me there were over 300 + stolen cars back there. I asked him, why would you steal a car on a friggin' island? For parts they can sell. When there's a fire, they can tell if it was an encampment because the propane bottle start going off like bombs. How would you liked to be lead on the hose and one of those goes off?

Looks like the courthouse and Banyon tree survived. Lahaina is such a cool town. I was watching video this morning of buildings burning. Very sad...
That Banyons a beast... glad to hear. Wild trees ... we've actually got a small sized one here in CDM.

It's got serious damage supposedly..Wouldnt call it safe by any means.

Just spoke to my hānai mom, and my other aunti a few minutes ago. Lahaina is gone, my aunti was on island for an event. My mom was also on the call as well. I pretty much listened to the 3 of them talk about their childhood (60's/early 70's) and the landmarks that are just gone. My one uncle (husband of the aunti above) is a maui boy, all are in disbelief. They have friends who have lost it all. It's truly sad what happened, and the devastation will be felt for a long time.

If you wish to help I'm going to post some links asap...but main thing is to reschedule vacations...this is NOT the time to go to Maui.

Why not go to a different Hawaiian Island? The State needs tourist dollars.

I am here now… I’ve been here since Friday. We lost power late Monday night and when we woke up on Tuesday, we figured we would leave early to go make our reservation for mamas fish house. The traffic is bad because I think everybody had the same idea to go to another part of the island that has electricity… At that time there’s no fear of a fire coming through in Lahaina. We did some short cuts to avoid some traffic and road through front Street, which was super windy leaves and debris blowing everywhere we commented about the tree and other things not knowing that would be the last time we saw it once our lunch was over at mamas… We went to McKenna for a few hours and then found out we could not get back to our timeshare. So we stayed in Kihei And slept in the minivan that we rented because we are a party of six. It is completely destroyed and torched… As you can see by the pictures I cannot get back to my hotel…where all of our luggage is… Our flight leaves Friday and we understand the road will not be open. We’ve been told that it might take a couple weeks if not months to get electricity back there … It’s terribly sad. The people lost their homes, their automobiles and their employment. I’d love to stay and help if I could somehow someway.

Gonna be a brutal road ahead for locals.... man have they been through so much. I was there during Covid times and my Uber told me he hadn't had a ride in 10 days.

For anyone that has relatives eating to fly out through ogg, Hawaiian airlines is out in 3 to 4 flights a day into the night and charging $19 one-way to Honolulu

We dont really enjoy the other islands. Once you are at a 5 star resort in Maui, its hard to compare.

And honestly I dont have energy to rebook everything and try to make it “work”. Gonna sit this one out👍🏻
Booked at the Kea Lani or Four Seasons? Was Waelei spared? Have not heard anything. Terrible news in any case. Fond memories from one of our favorite dive bars. ☹️

West Maui is our special place for my wife and I. We're so sad to see all this.

Secondly it angers me, because I know this will be used as a tool to further push an agenda. (which will move focus away from what's really important here)

I called out someone this morning on LinkedIn over this...they were using it as a push for renewables etc...essentially a sales tactic. Full Haole behavior, trying to capitalize on tragedy.

City and County of Honolulu "the bus" is staged at HNL to take people to the Convention Center shelter that has been set up. Animals get to fly for $1 as well.

Did I miss the disaster relief proclamation from “Brandon” or his FEMA clown?
I haven't experienced Brandon's FEMA, and of course hoping I don't.
I will however applaud Bush's FEMA and their local response in San Diego, in '07.
They rapidly established a local, easily accessible and extremely well organized base camp for the fire victims.
Once checked in (Which was extremely efficiently accomplished) within minutes you were issued a FEMA ID. Then you proceeded to a large tent where they provided you with food (If you required it), then each person received a 5 gallon bucket already prepped with your basic sanitary care products. Other organizations were there to provide emergency food (Like Dave's MRI's), and clothing. Also monetary assistance was available if needed.
In another extremely large tent structure they had tables around the circumference, at each table were representatives from each and every of the county's or affected city's agencies.
Since we were county, the county reps already had computers set up for printing out copies of our home's tax records and other registered documents to quickly replace those critical documents most of us had lost in the fire and save us the arduous task of doing it all down town.
They also provided documentation that would allow for a "No Fee" rebuilding permit fee and expedited plan check process.

The FEMA ID # also allowed us to receive 10% off at places like Home Depot, Lowes, Dixieline, and many many other area stores for the next several years.

That was my first and hopefully only experience with anything FEMA, but as far as I'm concerned, at least in '07, they and other similar entities were extremely responsive and highly beneficial. 👍

No need, they spent the FEMA budget on airfares for illegals.

I know this will be used as a tool to further push an agenda. (which will move focus away from what's really important here)

It didn’t take long, BBC already said it’s being blamed on climate change.

A guy from Maui called into KLOS this morning and said the media isn't painting the true story. He said that there are bodies in the streets...Such a terrible thing to happen to these people. Hawaiian people have pride in their land and I'd venture to guess many stayed as long as they possible could.

Can't believe such an amazing place is poof, gone.

36 dead so far…may not be bodies in the streets but it’s a bad deal.

36 people have lost their lives in this tragedy, hopefully there are no more, but MFD is still battling flare ups and hot spots. Devastating to say the least.

You can go to the KHON2 website to see the list of people that are missing or have checked in as being safe. Cell service is still extremely spotty on the west side.

Still so sad to see. The videos depict such a nightmare as the winds made the fire flare. This was at a level that I had not ever seen before. We have a lot of fire fighting friends and this is my greatest concern for them. People staying back to try fight off the flames to save the family home. I get it but it was such an inferno that could not be fought back. Personal effects and family heirlooms are important but just not worth risking life for. That is why I have a few things that I keep in mind that I will grab as I am walking out the door expecting not to come back to a house. I guess that is my mindset as we have had hurricane/tsunami warnings each year. Other than that our properties are insured to cover the loss.

Best to all those out the affected by this horrible event.

I know that a few members have posted concerns of friends or family that were on Maui. If anyone needs any help please post up. If it is a ride, meal room to crash as you are going from Maui to the mainland or just figuring out your game plan reach out. I’d be happy to help in any way that I can.

There was previous mention of only 150 FF for the entire island of Maui. Is that accurate?

Pretty accurate and also they deployed national guard but they are spread thin because of all the different areas that are burning.

We have been to all the islands and Maui is our favorite. Was really hoping to go back since we want to see areas we didn't see the first time.

I was listening to that guy, I also heard him say over 100 are dead, and the news isn't reporting all the facts.
