Yea I agree, just want to make sure the news isn't "sensationalizing" alot of it, because thats the consensus on reddit right now. Airlines are barley allowing changes at the moment, although 2000 people are stranded at OGC.

Sorry to hear about Maui, i have no idea how bad it really is.

Reddit has turned into a cesspool of sensationalism ever since they banned all the communities and users that didn't subscribe to their leftist bullshit 4 or 5 years ago. So any time i end up in a comment section there, i take it with a huge helping of salt.

Lahaina is such a cool town, what a shame! spent a lot of time there for a friends wedding a few years ago, and her whole family lives there. Sounds like their church burned down, and her dad was able to get out of his home, but one a few doors down was on fire. Crazy stuff.

Is the fire still actively burning in town or have they got a grip on it?

Lots of info spreading on this thread so why not jump in.... I've got friends living in Lahaina and haven't heard from either on their FB page which is not promising. As has been mentioned Maui has multiple climates for being such a tiny island... for those not knowing or simply popping in/out on vaca it has two to three distinctly different climates or zones. My friends in Lahaina had to evacuate maybe 3-4 years ago when this last occured and fires were due to tradewinds taking down power lines which sparked brush fires. That side of Maui is extremely arid and dry [not as bad as you desert guys cause they do get rains] and if you drive to another side of Maui you'll see entirely different vegetation due to more rain. And then if you go on what I call the Backside of Maui the homes are actually quite less costly due to the constant tradewinds that never seem to stop. [Imagine living where you get a solid week of 50-60 mph winds and they don't stop at night!] My friends live in an affluent community up a hill from ocean where folks like Doobie Bro singer McDonald and Fleetwood drummer dude have homes. I see their town burning badly at moment and I guess its all about wind direction now whether it'll find its way to my peeps.

@HubbaHubbaLife as an FYI every time something bad happens in HI phone circuits get overloaded and almost immediately go down (cell phone/landline whatever). Doesn't matter if its a Tsunami, Earthquake, Hurricane, tropical storm etc. If you have someone you need to find...Red Cross, or oddly enough snapchat. Snapchat works...as long as you have a data signal. It was the sole way we could get out messages when the button boy nuke fiasco happened. I think a lot of the infrastructure for that area is gone now so even then there likely is no way for contact. The only way we got news on friends was one of them calling their wife back on Oahu from a shelter setup.

I get that but was it an asshole arsonist or power lines or.....
I ask myself, and others this several times a week when I get notifications of local fire starts.
Thankfully Cal Fire and various SD local crews have been waging an extremely fast and aggressive response.
Come Oct and there's a 50 mph Santa Ana and shit gets ugly quick as you know.
So yes, 1 acre, 5 acre, 1/2 acres, but why I wonder ? People tossing smokes and Cats, but RD sez that's "Impossible", OK, then whom and why ?

That horrible mid-air collision between two helos in Banning the other evening, killed three in the Bell 407, Skycrane was able to land.
That fire I think I read was caused by a house or trailer fire that got into the brush, extinguished at about 3 acres, --- but 3 lives lost. That's so sad.
Most of us, including my aging ass, go our entire lives without starting an unintentional fire, I dunno. What I have learned is, unless somebody confesses, or there's a vehicle involved, or lives are lost or homes destroyed, or an eye witness, chances are, nobody will be investigating and we chalk another one up to that dreaded "Spontaneous Combustion".

This one just started about an hour ago ---- https://app.watchduty.org/i/9942

Bunnie Fire, out between Ramona and Barona --- this ones going places unfortunately:mad:.

Good info thanks. I'm not worried now that I've seen helicopter video ... towns toast but they're 10 minutes away.

Canceling arrangements as I type. As I se the images, the last thing they need there are tourists typing up emergency services and roads. Looks like Scorched hell.

Hard to get anyone to cancel obviously as all phones are down. Its the last of their priorities from looking at the images.

Take a day or two if you can before cancelling. They'll be a ton of data online. Damage might just be in small town in those pics. There's more to see and do .... I just can't tell how much spread just yet.

So sad. We were they not to long ago and stayed in Lahaina. We probably stopped in every shop and bar.

Tourism Board is evacuating 4,000 tourists to Oahu. 6 confirmed dead so far, fire in Kihei and other places per FEMA press conference I just watched.

So many reasons why I decided not too.

The vibe there is not something conducive to a vacation at this point. Its sad. My wife here is crying.

It was 1500$ a night at a five star resort. I cant imagine none of those employees being impacted. I dont need them worried about home life and taking care of me and family.

Its just too expensive to “wing it”.

Im pissed, sad, sick. My first real vacation in 15 years. But its just a vacation for me. People have lost lives.

Looks like the courthouse and Banyon tree survived. Lahaina is such a cool town. I was watching video this morning of buildings burning. Very sad...
I think the courthouse stands, but looks burned out and no roof. 😥

This is so sad, we visit there often.

Have a buddy that is an ex-USFS fire guy currently living in Kihei. He said it's looking like wind from Dora was knocking down power lines.

I looked at the pic again and yeah, it looks like the roof is gone. Looks like the Banyon tree might be at least somewhat burned as well. That's terrible!

Being mentioned previously that Kihei burned or is involved, if this is same fire all the way to Lahaina... this thing went some distance. I know some firefighters there, they have obviously been overwhelmed with limited recourses for this size and scale of an incident.

I wonder if the Banyan Tree on front street survived?

It would be a shock if it did/does, It looks like it took a lot of heat from the courthouse burning, still hard to tell from that pic. wild coverage.

Thank you, understandable considering it's bordered on the north side by San Vicente Rd.
No containment listed but 184 acres and very little smoke showing on the Alert Ca cams now.
Now it's Lake Perris North that's on stage for the afternoon show.

Separate fires. At least 4 burning around the island that are separate fires.

Not sure of the accuracy but USFS buddy says just under 150 total firefighters on Maui. He also says that the majority have zero wild fire training. This is not what those men and women were trained for. Nor do they have the resources to really battle fires of this size. Throw in 4 fires around the island and it's pretty much every man, woman and child on their own. Stretched thin is an understatement.

Too bad the Federal Government and Hawaii spent $12+ billion on that almost useless train and didn't buy some legit fire fighting equipment (helos, air tankers, etc.) for each of the inhabited islands instead.

Aloha

If you're dead set on going, stay on the east side like Wailea. News said Kihei is safe now. West of Lahaina towards Napili is okay but you can't get there. Friend of mine is a Fireman on Maui, had lunch with him Tuesday constantly on the phone with his son who's also a fireman there, he's here celebrating his dads 93rd birthday last weekend, was supposed to go home today. Why leave, he can't get home up by Napili. He said a friend of his on the department lost his house, boat everything is gone. He'd go back to try and help but he broke his foot last week before he came over. He wouldn't be any help. He's in a soft cast hobbling around. As soon as the road is open past Lahaina he's catching the first flight.

Not the same but can always book a trip to Mammoth and enjoy the mountains, head to the river, plenty of places to go enjoy 👍🏻

Aside from the travesty of it, now an huge chunk of Hawaiian tourism shifts to the other islands for some undetermined amount of time. Kauai was already a cluster last October.

I’m hearing bits and pieces that half of old town Lahaina is destroyed along with the harbor area. Just unbelievable I’ve been going there since 1974.

I'm devastated. I'm getting news from friends that live on the island only from this morning. Phones aren't working anymore. I've been going to Maui since I was 3. I had a trip in 9 months. Prayers from me and my family to all. This is alot bigger than I can describe. My sister still can't get ahold of her friend and her husband. They arrived Sunday. What is the scariest part is how fast this fire completely consumed the small historic town of Lahaina. No news updates due to west Maui only having 1 access road in and out. Prayers please.

What is the likelihood of the main highway opening tonight to get up towards Kaanapali. Daughter and friends need to get up to get their belongings. They are not due out til Friday night. They are stuck in a van down in Kehei. Got caught in the mayhem and have nothing. Kehei is open they are at the CVS a family member was out of insulin. Scary stuff for sure. They are hoping to get back up tonight.

They can take the back road to kaanapali , it's a hike but I belive it's open . It's the 340 or kahaekii hwy from Wailuku , run that north it turns into the 30 or Honoapiilani which then will take them to kaanapali.

Stay put from what I hear. The only other way to Kaanapali besides through lahaina is around the road from Hana. I would not want to be on that road with traffic and unpredictable winds. It narrows down to 1 lane.
