Or you can look at it like they both were running next to each other...parallel. When Tony cut across, he intersected his line first, which is why he went through the propwash first. Poor JT was on his left, too.

So lets summarize:

Left = possible death
Right = maybe live

I'm going right.

You forgot one:
I'm not supposed to be this far left, left me back out of it and reposition myself as stated in the drivers meeting which coincides with basic boating laws in the US.
We realize you have it out for Tony, but come on.

At the driver's meeting, they tell them to lineup across the lake, because through that section, it's too narrow for everyone to fit right of the centerline. The lake opens up about a mile down the lake.How many Desert Storms have you driven in? I've driven in seven....so i pretty much know the speech by heart.

I don't have it out for Tony- I actually love the guy. It makes me sad to watch that video, but happy that no one really got hurt.

You're telling us that the DS promoters and safety team told the drivers to line up illegally across the lake, against all rules locally concerning the direction of travel in the narrows but to the right of center later when it opens up? I find that extremely hard to believe and you're full of shit.

No...they lineup that way. What usually happens is as they release them, the fast guys start to stretch it out, and everyong makes their way to the centerline. Obviously that didn't happen this time.

Like I said earlier, even if their were no other boats on the lake, the M41 took a bad line. It's probably the straighter line down the lake, but straighter isn't always better, especially with oncoming traffic.

Anytime you want to come out, sit through a driver's meeting (hungover), and then sit in my boat for the poker run, let me know- no problem. I'll help you graduate from a keyboard quarterback, to someone who has actually been there.

Quit contradicting yourself. First, you say they tell the drivers to line up.
I ask if DS actually says this.
You say no, they just do it.

You lost your argument pages ago and you're running in circles trying to vilify the 41.

My friend owns that boat, and he was the other guy in it when it happened. He's one of the nicest guys I know (like Tony). I'm sure he'd like to take it back, but luckily, no one was hurt.

He loves the boat- planning on using it alot this summer.

HaviGirlie, welcome! You seem to know a few people here. Sounds like you might be a pretty good bench racer yourself. ;) :D

I have been reading all of these pages and other threads relating to Desert Storm and I can only come to one conclusion. There is no way if I was part of the government that I would renew the permit for the poker run and there is no way if I was an underwriter that I would renew any insurance. Are you guys kidding in what is posted here? Do you guys recognize that if there was ever an accident with real injuries, that these threads would be the greatest plaintiff's evidence ever?

1) You have an open lake where people are admitting that it is a race when it is not a race but sanctioned and insured as a poker run. People are actually talking about the "racing line" not the rules of boating on an open lake. The discussion is that everyone had knowledge that it is really a race, driving is judged by racing standards not open lake standards on an open lake where grandpa and grandma should have equal access. All of this is being sanctioned on an open and public lake?

2) You have event "patrol boats" washing down people intentionally to get them out of a public space, and off to the side of the lake while bragging about it? Are you guys kidding?

3) You have participants with what appears to be known history of "racing" in a non racing event, yet they are allowed to register?

4) You have essentially race boats, capable of speeds far in excess of the skill level of an average boater, yet there is no or limited qualifications to enter and "race"?

5) You have participants in the days before and after running a few feet off other boaters in smaller boats at triple digit closing speeds with DS entry stickers on the boat?

6) There is undeniable public knowledge of this behavior by the organizers and the governmental agencies in charge?

I like having a good time as much as everyone but this type of horrible decision-making is exactly why all of us keep getting squeezed with more and more rules and regulations in all our activities. This whole incident was just plain stupid and completely preventable by using the upper rather than the lower brain. Unfortunately, these types of decisions end up screwing all of us in the long run. Enjoy your fast boat while you can because it is shit like this that will eventually end the fun for all of us.

Rant over, have a nice day. :)

Yep. Also the concern is with group C (first group released to card stop 1). Everyone else seems to manage with the current rules without issues.

RK, Poker Runs were around for a long time , [ I've been participating for 15 yrs ] Coast Guard officials ARE totally aware of what's going on at these events.;)
In my area, PR events are almost non existent today due to difficulty getting a CG permit or cancellation due from pressure group interference. We had a pretty safe record unlike the string of accidents lately in the US. I hear Bob Teague and Jim Nichols stressing the importance of safety at the driver meetings but know it too well adrenalin takes over common sense at the start line;). These boats need to be spaced more, every boat should have a spotter, especially in such a tiny area like going south from Havasu with no room to spare. IMO, both drivers made errors. In the video one can see that the 41 sort of made an abrupt left turn with the M35 too close behind. Making it an even worse scenario, the M35 driving through the M41's wake without lifting. Some people dwelled on the position of drives after the boat pulled and on its trailer, causing the flip. They should watch the video more carefully, no way that M35 could have moved at that speed with the drives aiming that high. If both boats weren't DCBs, the discussion on this board would have been one sided 90%! I'm sure the organizers will have a serious re-thinking how this event will go next year to keep it going.

How are people that are let's say there for the weekend, don't have any idea what Desert Storm is, Launch at cattail and are just chilling on the lake going about their own way supposed to know that there are boats coming in at 100+ mph and that they are supposed to be out of the way? Maybe they should have someone handing out a flier to people who are about to launch warning them to stay out of the way??

I know this was done in years past. Fliers were handed out at all the launch ramps but I do not know if that was done this year.

I'm kind of leaning toward Havasu Hangin's side at this point in the discussion. I haven't read his arguments but he is posting pictures of haviGirlie and she is fabulous. :thumbsup
