.40 cal is a great choice from any reputable manufacturer. S&W (My Fav), Beretta, Taurus, or Ruger. .45 ACP is better IMO. 10mm Auto even better! (But I'm a gun nut). The .40 only came about because the pussies at the FBI couldn't handle the 10mm (Of which I am a HUGE fan, own 3, carry one...
