As most of you know by all the birthday wishes i got today, today was my birthday.....Well my present was to pick out a hand gun for this special occassion.I dont need all the scuttle butt about the best in the world or the most tatical gun made or even the gun with the most stopping power for a intruder.I just need to know a good direction to go for a basic hand gun, that is a decent price that i will use a liitle bit while at the river and a good place to buy it. Dont plan to research this subject to hard so im guessing any info i do have will come from this thread or the guy at the gun counter.

Can you get a decent gun around 350-400? Kinda set the budget close to that, i know whats another 100 bucks but really not looking to spend 5-600 on a gun.

A RIA should be around 400.

if you don't care if its new or not, I'd look at the 3rd gen smiths and wesson autos that are LEO trade in.

they should be about 300 ish.

I may be prejudice, but my choice is a Glock 22, chambered for .40 cal.

Trust me. I'm from the government.

I think the Colt 1911 is a classic.

But for a modern day self defense/combat situation, I prefer a Glock 30.

Compact .45 ACP with a 10 round mag. :thumbsup

boatnam2, if you have a gun shop with a range go there and test fire all the guns in your price range. Check for the gun to fit your hand. Some of the new smaller 45's are nice but have huge handles for them extra rounds. When I picked up my Glock I wanted the 45 version. But after firing darn near every pistol they offered, the Glock 17 was the most comfy and that added up to more accurate. I know the 9mm :blah::blah::blah: but its been a fun inexpensive to fire pistol.

The place I got mine is Caswells Shooting Range in Mesa AZ. its an Indoor range. I fired new and used. I paid for the ammo.

I was kinda bummed that I didn't like the feel of the pistol that I intended to buy. But in the end i made the right choice based on how well the gun felt in my hands.

are you thinking wheel gun or semi auto

a ruger sp101 thats shoots 38 or 357 is a great basic handgun and easy to shoot. if you go semi auto, glock if you dont want a saftey switch and at the top of your dollar range, on sale right now at turners in so cal. 400-850 bucks give you lost of choices. and then theres custom stuff

.40 cal is a great choice from any reputable manufacturer. S&W (My Fav), Beretta, Taurus, or Ruger. .45 ACP is better IMO. 10mm Auto even better! (But I'm a gun nut).

The .40 only came about because the pussies at the FBI couldn't handle the 10mm (Of which I am a HUGE fan, own 3, carry one regularly). A shot from a 10mm is not something anyones likely to walk away from.

The .40 is a very good compromise in power vs. recoil. Better than the 9mm, not as good as the .45, but has 9mm like recoil. The 10mm? Well, different animal. Fairly heavy recoil, even by .45 standards, but performance? Factory 10mm loads (There are none available now) beat even the .41 Magnum in performance, and come close to some 44 magnum factory loads.

For a carry gun, I would look at the Kahr, Glocks , or Walther/S&W 99's, in .40 S&W. Pretty hard to beat them. They're light, well made, and pack plenty of power.

Not really wes, but now that you mention it. No j/k just most gun threads turn into a huge thread that just makes it so much more confusing for a guy just starting out. Not sure why but after reading all the threads tatical and stopping power always stick in my mind.

Anthony vote for the Springfield XD .40 Cal one of the best guns I have shot so far.

But if your into the glocks you can't go wrong with the Glock 22 either, both are excellent guns.

I think you're right.. It seems like the gun threads turn into people trying to "out tacti-cool" each other with different suggestions.

I'm far from an expert, but to me it seems like a Glock and/or XD is a staple in most people's gun collections. Most people like them, they're not as expensive as a nice 1911, and if you decide that it's not for you there's a good resale market for them.

Probably the best advice is to get to a range that rents guns, and see what fits you and your budget.

I also vote for Glock or Springfield XD for someone getting 1 gun for self defense. 9mm, .40, and .45 are all good choices. All are fairly available ammo. 9mm is the cheapest, but if someone is not planning on shooting much, then it doesn't matter.

1911s are cool. I like to think of them like the v-drives of guns. Old technology that is still really cool today. They look awesome, tend to be very accurate, and have a basic efficient design to them. But, they are higher maintenance...need to be cleaned...often. And, it is not good to release the slide without chambering a round. Don't forget the 1911 badge of honor....you haven't really shot your 1911 until it has made you bleed. Most the people recommending 1911s have lots of guns, or lots of gun experience and or both. They have come to appreciate the history and workmanship of this gun. The 1911 is kind of the "real man's" type of gun. Guys let out Tim Taylor gorrila grunts when they see them....ambidextrous safety? and most jiz in their pants.

Think im going to go down to riverside range and check out the rental deal. Like i say budget is low so the 1911 is was out of this range, maybe i will like it and get something a lot nicer when the money isnt funny. I have a range a mile from my house so who knows may be my next hobby. Thanks for all the info everyone.

I buy online, but sometimes you can find good deals at wal mart. For the most part, gun stores are going to be more expensive.

Buy cheap ammo for the shooting range and some good ammo for home use.

I vote for a wheel gun. I like my .357. You can shoot .38's in it for cheap shooting or put some .357's in if you want a big bang! I've been real happy with my Ruger GP100. Most people I take shooting like it better than my autos also cause of the ease of loading. Its accurate and reliable too.

My Favorite handgun I have is my Kimber 1911 Raptor .45 ACP.....
But for the budget minded best buy.....and still a great gun....I think the Springfield XD .40 is what I would buy. I've been wanting to buy that as a pickup gun I can keep in teh center console. (I live In Texas) haha we can do that still here.

Well boys i went the cheap route....I bought the ruger 9mm for less then 300 new. After going to a few stores and 2 ranges i think this will be good for now plus it was the last day of the sale. My budget was 300 and i didnt mind spending a little more to get something nice but when you throw in a cal cert for 25, a background check for 30 and few boxes of shells your 300 is now 500. I have a few weeks to change my mind waiting on my drivers license and the the 10 day wait after that so i do plan to shot a few 9's a 40 and a 45 by then but unless there is a world of difference probaly just keep what i got. Swat team was at rahuuges yesterday that was pretty cool to watch talk about going through rounds...I liked the sigma also but the ruger felt better to me.

You went the cheap route in price only!!

That is one of the best guns, and some will say "FOR THE MONEY" and thats bullshit, its one of the best all around guns you will own, typical, you ask a question, and you will get the 1000 dollar answers, my response is you did well, very well, Ive got a couple Ruger Simi autos, and the work flawlessly!!

That is good to hear BBD. What is the deal with the 3 point sight or mill sight. I did not shoot yet but was showed the difference at the range seems like it does make it easier to aim but like i say i probably couldn't hit the side of a building yet so what do i know.

Now that you have the iron, the next (and biggest) part of the equation is getting some training to use it. The good part is if you're new to guns, you don't have any bad habits to "unlearn."

If you care to take a ride, look into Front Sight firearms training facility outside Pahrump NV. They offer a 4-day defensive handgun class that is very good. The class will make anyone better, regardless of skill level, and really takes the new shooter to a level they had no idea they could accomplish. We're talking putting 2 rounds on target from a concealed holster in less than 3 seconds!

Anyway, if you look on their site, the class is $2000 BUT you can find certificates on Ebay and other places that allows you (first time student) to take the class for FREE. Typically, these certs are selling for around $100. If you have trouble finding one, let me know and I'll look and ask around...but normally it's not much of a problem to find one.

The training is definitely worth your time and you get not only skills, but basic gun handling and safety as well as some lectures on problems 2 & 3. Problem 1 is surviving the fight. 2 & 3 are the criminal and civil survival after the fact.

Anyway, congrats on getting into another highly addictive hobby. Be safe, train and enjoy!

As they say, any gun will do if YOU will do.

I just got back last night from Front Sight. They had 650+ this last weekend...it was a great time!

I would let you have a certificate, but I already gave all of mine away. In fact, I took someone this weekend that used a certificate...and now he is buying a life membership. That is the usual outcome....people get there on a certificate, and then love it and "have" to join.

I see a LOT of people that have been "around guns" out at Front Sight that get quite a bit of value out of their courses and enjoy the courses just as much, if not more, than people who are new to guns and shooting. Front Sight is really hard to explain...the best explanation is just to get someone out there and experience it. With the certificates, it makes it nice because people can get out there for free, or very low cost. Even if you only took 1 course, your gun handling and safety would change for the rest of your life.
