Roosting laws?

I have a probably stupid question. I've heard roosting someone is damn near a felony - right? I also was told recently even throwing a roost is illegal - I doubt the latter but better to ask than get a ticket.

What if say a close jet ski was going back and forth to jump your wake, when he crosses out of your line of fire you hit the diverter (not the ski) and he then turns into it - busted?

Is it legal to roost wakeboard boats that make you feel like your running the baja 1000 (full balists, 15 mph) with no one behind them? :grumble: (I know this must be)

EDIT: Sorry for the last comment, I am more concerned about the other questions - not the joke I made. Jets or WB boats don't cause the problems, it's the drivers boating etiquette.

I do know boating etiquette and most every law and do the best I can to be respectful and safe (I know roosting the rollers is not proper). Are their laws in place for this stuff? I know their are for wakes - but most don't even respect those.

Good question, I've always wondered that too. I've skied through a few while my friends laughed, kinda hurts. Not felony worthy through. :drillsergeant:

Several year back I had purchased matched Sea Doos for my then Teen age kids , Ine afternoon a short distance from our Dock at Naciemento I whatched as my Son and Daughter "Spun out while riding Tandem on one of the "Doos" When this happened The Son got dumped off the back When the daughter came back to pick him up she kinda "slid" past him "douching" him with the spray Unfortunatley this was also witnessed by a Ranger who promptly "wrote" my little girl a fat old ticket (not an just an infraction but a misdemeanor Harbor and Navigation code ) Seems the action she performed was considered "wetting down" and fell ito the category of "reckless endangerment" Took me and my Atty , a trip to court a fine and an essay to get this down to an infraction Tom

PS Dennis please check your Pms re the "Gun drill" info on the steering Column ;) Tom

I would think BoatCop could provide the letter of the law. From a practical perspective I can see roosting somebody being a ticketable offense but I wouldnt think throwing one would be.

You are responsible for your wake and the direction of your jet. If you dows another craft with your jet and they're craft sinks or is damaged your responsible.

I was warned many years back that If I was to hit a jet ski with my roost, Even if the jetski was behind me and was purposely in my jets direction I am responsible. When ever I'm passing others I keep the roost down. Like Tom said. Its a big deal on water.

I had a guy go under my roost this summer. I couldn't get it down in time. Once I got the roost down I turned around cause I know he was not in good shape after that stream pounded his boat. He was fine and so were his passengers. But surprised by how much water was inside his boat. Dam near sunk it. He also mention that it stung when the sprinkles hit him, lol. Leason Learned:drillsergeant::thumbsup

Just isn't worth hurting someone.

This is one of the reasons I asked... Last trip a friend of mine intentionally went into my roost on a ski to "cool off". He thought I was lame for not allowing it to happen more than once. I'd hate to get a giant fine for something stupid.

Oh!...ok!.....bash the boarders ehh?......what's safer a boat going 15mph on the river or a jet boat going 85mph with the diverter on? If anyone ever roosted me on purpose and I couldn't kick the shit out of the fool :bash: I'd be sure to alert BC & the boys and they'd be paying for a new sound system, cell phones, ipods, bodily damage from the force and anything else I could think of :thumbsup

I would have to agree. If you Roost anybody you better be ready to throw down cause I can promise if that ever happens to me I'll be out for blood. My uncle Jerry roosted somebody that pissed him off at the lake one afternoon while she was riding a tube behind his boat.

I'm just kidding - don't take it to heart. A bunch of guys in our group have wake board boats and are great people. Plus - their is no way in hell I could get my Jet up to 85... It may sound like it's doing 85, but it's far from that :D

I was more concerned about guys like my buddy on a ski that intentionally go into a roost to cool off...

Good call. Hey if he would have been hit he would have learned that its not so cool. Its more like thousands of tiny bees all stinging at the same time.

OK tuff guy:D Id say the jet boat going 85.:D If I were drivin. Most Wake boats are purposely making wakes. I on the other hand am very aware of my roost.

There is 1 guy at the Sag that just don't get it. He runs a red and black Master craft that's on everyones SHit List. He runs his barge within 10 ft of us when we are watching the cliff jumpers. No more warnings for him. Next season if he still has a boat there will be no mercy for this guy. Even some of the wake boaters told me he's a jerk.

Coz Jus messin with ya. For a Wake Maker your OK. Parade of Lights at the Sag on Saturday Night 12/5 at the SAG. All day on the back beach. Lights show between dusk till Whenever:champagne:

you can definatly hurt someone with the force of the roost. If your curious, drive behind someone with thier roost up and see how it feels.

As for the roll bar boats, a ski rope thrown across thier bow will make them stop.

I'm behind you Jimmy! That same boat and apparently a bud of his, split me within 15 feet on either side, as I was getting ready to pull up a Skier, and were the cause of nearly sinking my Greenie just outside the NWZ. THAT GUYS got a reckoning coming. The new version of the Greenie, or the Moo this spring, NWZ or not, I'm owning the guy if I ever see him again! MY 60 year old aunt, my skier, was bobbing under the water like a bobber during this, and I could do NOTHING.

But I also agree, most wake boaters are cool as hell, and I even get a lil kick rolling in and out of the wakes a bit myself at speed, :thumbsup
Nothing against you Coz!

Afriend of mine got a ticket for running his roost and was informed that the rule is 150 ft from any other "vessel". And Cave is right, as a driver of any boat you are legally responsible for any damage occured by your'e roost or wake. This may make people think again before cruising by a dock or floating boat just off plane. Swamp and sink my boat and I will own you!

I remember my ole man tellin me the story of when he was testing a new '73 Marlin with another guy from the plant and not seeing a sail boat out on the lake until last minute. Needless to say, Jet-o-vator was in full force, filled up the sail with water, capsized, and cop had the lights goin'. Cop was/was not amused, and gave a warning. The tough part was that the boat was just built and being tested, so no registration.

Last summer i was on Parker around 515pm going up to the dam all boats were floating on the left side of the river so I thought cool light it up on the right givem a show!!!! went all the way up to the dam and look behind me and guess who the fuz!!!!! Super nice sheriff "said wow that was one of the coolest roost he had seen." So i think cool he liked it. Not so much!!! He said it was against the law to have the jetovator in the up position as to throw a huge roost. He said it blocks the visablilty of other drivers..He let me go and said to not do it again or i would get the ticket and be told to get off the water!!!!!! Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!sorry kinda long!!!

Lucky for you. B mac and Dale on the lower river not so much. I guess it really depends on the popo who views the incident. Rookie vs experienced.

My question would be this. If a 25+ prop boat is running hard at 80+ and has a roost do they also get the warning or is it just a Jet boat running at maybe 60 roosting??? According to the Yuma deputies a roost is a roost. Especially if viewed directly from behind. An experienced LEO might know the difference. A rookie may do you like Dale was done.

I error on the side of caution. I can through a nice roost. I always check to see who's running out there with me. If its crowded I just keep it under control. To many newbees want to cool off. I've heard that it stings pretty good when running under the roost.:D:skull:D So I've heard.
