Pretty sure the Cougar would have the edge from start through mid-range speeds, although that V8 is a torque monster. I think the Twister(bigger hull) would keep it honest on top. Sort of like an F1 car and a Grand Touring sports car. Lol
when you look at the physics, one would think the cougar would punch a WAY smaller hole thru air then that gigantic looking twister/Argo...someone did there homework with twister/Argo on the wind tunnel testing for sure!

Adam McKeon ran 126 with my/his old argo 23 300XS with DBR mods. He had aspirations to try to get 130 before he sold it to me.

Did Adam do accurate topend tests befor and after DBR mods on the airpump motor?I know the DBR mods help acceleration on AP motors, but Randy Corson and others i have heard claim no topend gains...Again,talking optis only here

I believe Adam did the DBR and lighter flywheel to get higher RPM for the 126

Yes I just sold the Argo, through Adam. He also sold his Twister, although its still on his property

He is the setup guru on those boats and I just thought better to let him sell everything.

Do you run negative trim at speed? I've always loved these boats, bet they ride great. How do you get them to the United States?
Yes its setup with negative trim as well as low water pickup. And then a rubber mat flap to trap the air at the back of the tunnel, along with extended wing plates on back to extend

If you look at the aero of the bow shape it is designed to put downforce on the bow.

Unfortunately they are not making the Argo hull anymore. I have no idea how to import a twister or an argo.

That was not the Dewald prop that I eventually bought and ran. That was a spare prop I bought from Adam when I purchased the boat to get on the water.

I can tell you I raced a 26 ft Howard with 800HP Keith Black S/C motor. We were both alone, no riders. We hit it at approx 55mph and ran up to 115 before letting off due to rougher water in the main channel of Lake Norman, and we were dead even all the way. Neither boat pulled different. I was pretty happy with that. Was always curious on acceleartion performance.

Not sure what the cougar weighs, but the argo is 850#'s. It may have been physically bigger, but super light!

850 is incredibly light considering the bulk!Maybey WC knows more, but i think Cougar is around same as it is a carbon layup.Being the cougar is a smaller boat with a center pod (modVp)i am sure it would plane WAY faster and leave any Argo/Twister in the dust/wake for first 1/2 mile..Just my $.02

I have 3 grandkids now with more on the way. Just didnt fit with the family anymore. I ran it 4-5 times last year, just didnt want to let it sit in my garage. Bought a "salt water boat" for FL to use with my family in its place. The Argo is and will be an awesome boat for the next owner. Its just very specialized in use. But I am super glad I had the chance to run it for the time I did!

No arguement here, I didnt have an adjustable jack plate, so holeshots with a 36 ptch prop were not what I was setup for! But from a rolling on plane start, would be fun to try!

The argo's and twisters weren't made for drag racing. If they were allowed in say the enduro to do what they do, there wouldn't be a snowballs chance in hell for anything else.

My Cougar corners fair...handles the rough well.
I takes a quick set and stays on a string all the way up. The Cougar weighs 1800 with the DBR 300X
372 HP
365 torque
The “next step” will bring it an additional 75 + hp ...waiting patiently for the
parts. THe Church will do a test session with the new numbers.
I dug the flap on the back of the Argo... going to try it on my Cougar !! It rides the “bubble” really good now, but maybe that would be even better. Very interested in experimenting with it. I’d need two flaps , lol.

How does the twister corner?
How does the Argo corner?

The argo was awesome in turns above 40. All the way to the top end. My 300XS was bone stock with a 2 yr warranty. Ended up putting a Mike Nass light wt cowl due to the water inversion with the stock engine cover. The sky would be the actual limit with a 300X like that on the back of it! LOL

Your cougar is awesome and have always watched as you kept tricking it out. What prop are you running?

Thank you for the kind words...
The Cougar is running a 30 BBLADES Blaster and 32 pitch Blaster....I also run a 30 Hydromotive 4 blade for rougher water conditions.
Wild Bill has a 32 custom Hoss 3 blade that we ran 122 with.
My buddy Alex, (21’ Liberator w/ 300R) is bringing up a 34 Merc 5 blade cleaver and a 35 pitch next week for me to test....should be very interesting to try these wheels on the Cougar MTR.
My DBR is also sitting up higher than it was since running it’s fastest numbers. I have been going up 1/8” at a time, as not to upset the boat. Personally, the top end number is not my goal...a small part of me wants to see the 130 mph I think it might do with a 34/35 pitch, but I prefer the better accelerating smaller pitch blades for overall performance.

Much larger diameter props on those Merc 34 and 35 cleavers though. It will be interesting to see how the Cougar likes them.

the Argo just left yesterday and the Twister is still in my barn- talks today of doing a 300R on it with the 1.60 gears. Who knows for sure...I had fun breaking in a new 300XS powerhead on the Argo last week.
( that motor was put on the Twister afterwards)

Sidenote- hope Im welcome to post in here being new to this site. My apologies if Ive stepped on sacred ground.

The DBR mods I typically do are:
ECU flash
Lightweight flywheel
Tuner
7lb cf Cowl
I would say the combination of weight savings and the ability to overturn the motor up to 6500+rpm are paramount in getting up to the marks I have hit. Basically allowing me roughly 4-6 additional mph if memory serves me correct.

Further- I recently added the DBR ecu , flywheel and a cf cowl on one of these new 2018 22 Talons / 300XS
( which are well built however grossly overweight by 400+lbs ) , it took it from a best of 93mph to 96mph. Same prop, load etc. The bottom end was extremely noticeable getting the lead sled on plane.

If your happy with how your opti runs I’de say leave it be, but if your like me and wish to wake it up and squeeze every last mph out of the boat then I say definitely go for it.
If you have any other questions feel free to get in touch. Im an open book and happy to share my experience.

Adam,
Which boat did you like better, the Argo or the Twister? Could you compare and contrast them for us?

They are both very similar as far as ride / speed. In fact -both performed identically which in the end Im confident was simply a limiting factor of rpm, gear ratio and prop however....

The Argo feels very well planted when your ready to let it eat. As you can see in the video above, very minor input is needed to quickly get up to speed. Trim it all the way DOWN and watch the horizon... without additional weight under my feet it wants to go over at 115-120. Im not a small guy at 6’2” / 240lbs but still needed about 50 additional pounds under me when stringing it out. Build quality and finish is excellent.

The Twister does not give you much feed back to trim input and on the big end it feels like its on a bubble. This could be due to the “mudflap” I eventually ended up running ( they do work, more on that later ). In big water you would’nt think it was only 24’. It takes the slop of a much bigger rig with its cavernous sized tunnel. Build quality good but the finish could be much improved. When they come out of the container plan on taking it to your favorite glass shop to give it some love.
They are built as race boats and treated as such.

Lol, the Alpha Dog showed it's fangs. Perfect water conditions for these hulls.
