War Canoe in the shadows?

View attachment 751417
Yes, I’m in the War Canoe and ready to do battle with the GN 77 of Bob Teague and past winner, Ben Marrone...
When it was all over, The War Canoe won class 5 in 2010 and placed 4th overall...

In 2011, we won class 6...

And in 2012 we added Tony Scarlata to the driver line up, and we won the “King of the River” title by winning the overall.

Our boat was a $1700.00 Hull we rescued and resurrected in our garage. The engine was a bone stock 300 XS Mercury.
We were told we were going to get slaughtered....
Careful who you pull a knife on.

Adam,
You are officially granted membership in the Outboard Church....We hope you enjoy our enthusiasm for Outboards as we know you are a true enthusiast....
Don’t forget our first Regatta in Havasu on June 22...Fly in and we will take care of you “Church Style”
No need to drag your fiberglass across the country, Bully and I will let you ride with us.
Scott
Looked at flights today. Very good chance I’ll make it out. Seems easy enough....

The DBR mods I typically do are:
ECU flash
Lightweight flywheel
Tuner
7lb cf Cowl
I would say the combination of weight savings and the ability to overturn the motor up to 6500+rpm are paramount in getting up to the marks I have hit. Basically allowing me roughly 4-6 additional mph if memory serves me correct.

Further- I recently added the DBR ecu , flywheel and a cf cowl on one of these new 2018 22 Talons / 300XS
( which are well built however grossly overweight by 400+lbs ) , it took it from a best of 93mph to 96mph. Same prop, load etc. The bottom end was extremely noticeable getting the lead sled on plane.

If your happy with how your opti runs I’de say leave it be, but if your like me and wish to wake it up and squeeze every last mph out of the boat then I say definitely go for it.
If you have any other questions feel free to get in touch. Im an open book and happy to share my experience.

Note:
Well truth is while looking for the best single engine outboard. I came across Adam's Argo and his Twister who along with some friends of mine from Malta, Croatia and Sweden said this is the hull to have. I figured a new single would be perfect so I decided to pick one up and make it into a reality. Adam was a big reason I went this route because in our conversation he told me it will haul the mail with 4 guys no problem and handle rough water.

I will write up an article once I am done with the boat. It has been a seriously long project and the build quality sucks coming from Finland. I literally had to redo everything and it came caveman bare bones. The sides were wavy mold work and gel coat were atrocious. To say it's a race boat and that's the way it comes is a joke and bullshit I know it took a lot of hours to make this hull right.

In the end it has gone from a rock to a gem and I am pleased thus far with the boat. This is a true 4 seat pleasure boat with stereo, glove box and all the comforts of a pleasure boat...versus a bare hull with seat and motor.

I just got back from Tickfaw 200 and had very little time to test or get the interior done and final touches.

Important News!!

We were trying to have an Outboard Church Regatta....
After being informed we need Permits and insurance policies amongst other legal exercises, we have to squash all formalities of getting together...
We never imagined the complexity of just trying to get together with like minded friends would prove to be so difficult. We are going boating, like always, but we can’t and won’t be running an organized event of any type ....
Too much liability, too much headache.

I’m having lunch probably at Route 66 on the 22nd. Then enjoying a nearby cove.

Sorry to cancel the “1st Regatta “ but I think you understand.

Sad world we live in. Are we allowed to meet friends on the lake & all go somewhere for lunch? Or is that against the law too??

Ragatta sounds so "Pussyfest" anyway, save that for the truck motor crowd. Flipping the bird at the authority and just getting together to run the river make this group much cooler!

I would have expected this type of nonsense in CA, but not AZ. Oh well, maybe i'll meet you for lunch.

Going to try out a different camera location to try and really get a good view of the lower in the water. I think getting a good look while underway can provide some good info.

What are you using to mount it? Adhesive, suction cup???
Its a suction cup. Also has a small lanyard attached to the transom U-bolt just in case it comes off. Ive had it on the back at over 100 and it stays put. Where it is now will be out of the direct wind.

What are the differences between the Argo & Twister? I don't know anything about either, other than they both look amazing. I would LOVE to learn about both.

Maybe the church can have a "Sunday school" session and teach us all. I know I love reading this thread! :)

I fully agree. The idea of a true tunnel 21-24' single OB that can get thru some sloppy water is very intriguing. Running the single 300 on F14's 24' Skater was great but completely under powered, especially with 4 people. I'm guessing these Argo & Twister are much lighter, very curious to learn more.

First off, the Argo is 23 ft and the Twister is 24 ft. Adam can probably give specifics on weight and tunnel width differences. The widebody Twister is way more boat than only the 1 ft seems.

First two are the Argo, last is the widebody Twister.

Thanks for your input. Seems like a Twister with a 15" mid 300R would be superb. I really like the idea of having the ability to haul 4 people when needed.

The back shot of the Argo reminds me of an F1 boat. The twister is huge. Does anyone know beam width and weight numbers?

That’s a bummer, my dad and I were really looking forward to running his new boat. My GF and I even got my mom to agree to stay home that weekend so she could watch our new born so we could take a little break lol. If there is going to be an “informal” meet up please do a post about it.

You hit the nail on the head. It was the whole reason I searched them out.
The visceral experience of something lightweight and fast like an STV or Mirage but with the ability to stay on the river and not get put on the trailer when it gets snotty is what I wanted. Ive had bigger twin engine cats and plenty of smaller boats. The “original” 1991 22 Talon I had was fast for what it was at 107-110 and superb at just about everything but lacked big water ability having the center pod. It was so good it was boring ( for me ). That all changes with an 850lb hull that has a tunnel the size of a 32 DW ! Some have argued “the gear case must get beat up” but truth be told, I have never broke a gear case on one of these rigs and my average day out is 200+ miles! I like to run hard for long distances- averaging 95-100mph the entire time which with a 36” prop is about 4500-4800rpm ( with 300xs).

I see a strong resurgence in outboard powered performance boats and it puts a big smile on my face.
Seriously- 130mph 30+ ft outboard powered rockets!! Love it

I can only imagine how fast that Argo would go with my DBR on the back....I would expect a solid 10 mph better, maybe more....that would equate to 136 + mph.
I would volunteer my engine for such an opportunity.....Rev

I can’t wait to work with the big V8 again....Wild Bill and I have more testing to do. On a mission to get this thing off the line and in the power sooner. Mercury should pay us for this R&D !! Fortunately for them, we are speed junkies that will find out what works. We want to find a prop that is less than a grand that works better than a $5600 Mercury cleaver. We think we will find such a prop.
Big thanks to Alex for trusting the Rev and Wild Bill behind the wheel of the 21’ Liberator...being a connoisseur of fine tunnels, it was a rewarding drive in the V8.
My 21’ Cougar looks like a peanut next to the Liberator....lol !!
