My brother just found this pass of me from 1998 on an old VHS tape.
Somehow he got out on the float in the middle of the hold rope at Lake Ming while I was on it.
Boat ran 8.00’s and right at 130.
Not bad for an all steel 427 on Alcohol.
Guess I’ll have to get it on a thumb drive!

RIP Truitt.
Nicest man in boating.
Thanks for that second picture.
Never seen it.
The man was a storyteller.
Felt fortunate to hear them!

I thought you'd like that one Dave! :)

He was a lot like Grich with his sharp memory of the past. I referred to him often when searching info on things like who designed this hull or that hull etc.

Truitt had a flatbottom bar? I remember Geroge Nordlings soda fountain, but didn't know Truitt had something like that. I'll see if Billy knows about it.

Couple other projects/work/family been taking time away from the Long Deck but making progress.
Here’s a shot of the “Honcho” strut brace as it gets closer to final routering and finish fit. All bolts will be flat head socket type when finished.
Stiffening plate now mounted under turnbuckle pads along with -12 pickups.
Clips for Vdrive countoured enough to go back in for engine line up. Need steering sprocket first so we can get that placed before putting Vdrive back in.

What did you set the cavitation plate at?

What did you set the cavitation plate at?
They are not set at this point as everything has to come apart for polish and anodize.
The plate set up is typically different for a Biesemeyer bottomed boat vs a standard flatbottom.
I saw where you took the Kalawaiian out and wasn’t quite sure your plates were set right.
Typically the older flatbottoms have deeper propshaft angles, motors not far enough forward and “Ski” props on them so it takes a little work to get the boat to “set”.
I’d like to know…
How many inches from the transom to the back of the block
How many inches from the transom to the center of the vdrive plate(also what vdrive?)
What size prop?
There is other measurements that could help but those two will tell us alot.
As a base set up in your boat, I would…
Put the override handle in the full forward position.
Set the plates 1/4 of an inch up from flat.
Make sure your straight edge is at least 2 feet forward of the leading edge of the plates.
Easiest way to do it is to clamp 6inch piece of 1/4inch keystock to the bottom of the plate as you move across an bring the plates down to touch it with your straight edge flat to the bottom.
Then put your straight edge across the back of the plates to be sure they are straight across.
When that’s done…adjust the far right turnbuckle down 3/8 of an inch, so a 1/8 inch Down versus the bottom of the boat.
Then go to the next turnbuckle and turn it down to give the right corner an even gullwing to the outer edge.
Depending on the way the boat is set up, this should give you a good place to start.
If boat is too loose pull the handle back 2 clicks and see what happens.
Good luck.
PM me a phone number if ya wanna talk live.

Thanks! I really appreciate your help, I'll measure tomorrow, and jot down what you wrote for the next time I float her!
Gratefully,
Tony

Longdeck update…
Mock block alignment day.
Here’s the process I use.
Made these parts at least 30 years ago.
The goal is to line the vdrive and crank center line up dead straight.
I took an old block and drilled out 4 pan bolt holes to 1/2 inch.
Drilled corresponding holes in a couple pieces of aluminum bar.
Used 1/2 inch all thread to set the block on and machined aluminum pucks to fit the mains that are center drilled.
I also have pucks to fit the mains of 5 or 6 other engines.
Idea is to move the jacking bolts around to achieve perfect alignment.
The holes in the shaft receiver are machined with in a thousandths or 2.
So critical on a solid drive shaft vdrive boat.
Not really sure how other guys do it but it works for me.

Finished up the Longdeck Engine today.
Goes to the dyno mid month.
Is set up for alcohol. Hoping to see 750 or so out of it.
One Goal is to limit holes in the dash.
Since the fuel shutoff is next to the drivers seat, it can be turned on and off by flipping it by hand. Spring locks both way by over centering.
Oil pressure gauge mounted on block as well. Will put a small Warning light somewhere within eyesight of driver.
After dyno, valve covers will be re-chromed. Ram tubes and headers will be black.
