Good stuff Dave! Somewhere around here I have video that Gordy gave me of Gordon Sr's first race boat launching in San Diego. I was pretty young the first time I remember seeing Liberty racing at Long Beach. :)

VanBeenen is a national treasure! Hope he's doing well! Julian told me the tragic story and before getting to know Julian I didn't realize he and Gordon were friends.

When I met Van Beenen at lake San Antonio back in 1996 he gave me a pretty gnarly ride across the lake in this boat. I'm sure you know this was a pretty light boat and the lake was far from calm that day. lol

Haha.
My last ride with VanBeenan I split my heel open on the passenger foot pedal!
Sometimes the old circle boat racer comes out in him!😂
He’s doin great.
Turns 84 in a month.
Still comes up every other Saturday or so for lunch, bench racing and cocktails.
Luv the guy!

So do I!
I’d restore it for free!
Gotta wonder what happened to it!

I asked Gordy about it 20 something years ago. Back then he said it was in Orange county and that he knew who owned it. Haven't asked since so I wonder at this point if he still has a line on it.

Was on the road this week but made some progress today.
It was chop saw/table saw day.
Trimmed all the rails to size back to the strut support also trimmed and cut to size the v drive, seat and tank mounts.
The floor looked like I sprayed it with Silver Metal Flake!😂
I really dig this vintage Moon stack tank!

Warpt71 has informed me of Glenn Robertson's passing. John Villegas introduced me to him at a Needles vacation maybe 99 or 2000. Just a super cool guy! I don't have much in the way of photos, but I'll post what I have. RIP Glenn.

Glenn and John out for a ride.

Thanks Jerry! Ive only ever seen one of those pics, good stuff. Glenn and that Hondo are a huge reason why I love dragboats as much as I do. That was my first really fast ride in a flat, thanks Glenn!!!! Race In Paradise #521

Leaving on Tuesday for a week and a half sales trip between Phoenix and Las Vegas so tried to get some stuff done on the Long Deck.
Finished the Tank Mounts(still needs some trimming), got the cav rod run. Was able to do some machining on the OG thru-hull to get way more travel out of it. Made the strut support mount. Still need to attach to the rails though. Bolts will be countersunk when done as will the matching rows that will hook the support up to the rails.

Got the vdrive roughed in today as well.
Still need to trim up the brackets, but she’s in nice and straight.
This line up is so critical.
My process is to use a tool I made to get the shaft log flat on the floor and the shaft centered in the shaftlog using the sleeve to achieve this. I’ve pulled apart so many boats where the shaft isn’t completely centered and it rubs on the shaft log and abuses the shaft seal because it is pulled one way or the other.
Then I have a selection of sleeves that I use to line up the prop shaft and output shaft on the vdrive. They are machined to .010 over the shaft size. That way the shafts are perfectly true to each other.

Adam towed from Michigan to Needles with that rig back in 2015. That was the photo he sent us when he headed out! Good dude right there! He works for Ford and fabbed up everything necessary to make a Ford work in his boat. He then returned the following year with Boss 9 Hemi heads and a new paint job that he also did himself.

I would love to hear the flat running, those headers are a work of art!!
They definitely have a different sound. Cool background on these. A friend of my dad and my godfather built these way back in the 60's I believe. He was a total gearhead that was always thinking of ways to improve power. He worked at a chevrolet dealer but not sure his position. Anyway, someone from Chevrolet racing (or whatever it was called at the time) gave him the prints for these headers so he built a set. They are not for everyone but I dig them. These were on his personal boat. Fast forward several decades and he sells the boat to my good friend Pat Minager. Well Pat removed them and I was fortunate enough to get my hands on them. My dad and godfather were tickled with that. If for no other reason, that was worth it to me. One more fun fact is that this boat was my dad's race boat in the early 70's. My godfather built the engine and my dad drove. So when you wrap it all together its kinda cool.

Chutes have saved a bunch from hitting water so hard. But I'm in your camp. That's a scary picture.

Well, I’m a fan.
My Dad’s Lifeline Chute Jacket probably saved his life.
It did exactly what it was supposed to do as you’ll see in the pictures below.
He was gonna probably go in head first and the chute deployed and put him down feet first. His Surfer instincts kicked in and he tucked and landed without a scratch.
I have worn a Lifeline since 1975 and have worn a Chute Jacket since 1988.
Drag racing I always hook it up, circle racing I don’t.
Still when I had my crash in a circle boat and went through a barrel roll, while breaking or fracturing 11 ribs…no internal injuries except a punctured lung.
Please..,if you’re gonna run hard, buy a real racing jacket with flotation, metal buckles and a brass zipper. The “race vests” won’t cut it in a 90mph plus crash.
My Dad’s flight in an Unblown Fuel Flatbottom…

That's a crazy photo sequence, with a great outcome. And you..."no internal injuries except a punctured lung."...that's making lemonade outta lemons!

It is the jacket, and not a surfer instinct. The chute is not connected to the jacket. The chute is connected to the leg straps, which run over the shoulders. When the chute deploys it pulls on your legs, tucking your body into a ball. Really great design by Bill at Lifeline. Great photo sequence and can really see the tight leg straps in the second to last photo.

Agree to disagree to a certain point.
Yes when properly fitted and tightened the leg straps are supposed to pull the legs up.
Point of my instincts comment was that he was not just a West Coast coastal surfer, he surfed the North Shore for 2 years 1953 and 54 while in the Army.
I’m middle named after one of his best friends, Buzzy Trent, a legend out there.
My comment was made to the fact that he tried put his hands around his head to ball up as much as he could just as you do on a 35 foot wave wipe out.
Seen more than I can count(sadly) pictures of drag boat crashes with the chute deployed. Never seen anyone do what he did.

If anything it was a spectacular crash!

Water looks good, pretty darn clear.
Boy that is shallow back there.
Which is the 660 boat?
