How cool is a wood deck Blown Fuel Flatbottom!
Definitely the best looking Panic Mouse.
When I was doing research on the the one I restored, it interested me as to why Caselli always ran a sprint car style steering wheel.
There wasn’t one with the box of parts I got.
I was sitting with Bubby Wilton, who had a stint as the engine builder for Ray, and asked him about the unique, to a boat, steering wheel.
He told me that Ray thought he could judge how hard the boat was leaving by how much that flimsy steering wheel bent at the hit of the throttle!
I was able to source one from the restoration…it just had to be!
Learning all the little details is what I really enjoy about doing these period correct builds!

I was wondering about the spacers under the heads......
The spacers are actually under the valve cover to clear a stud girdle. This was before the tall valve covers were readily available.

I didn't see the block spacers. Tall block conversion!
Honestly, I think that is all it could be.
Spacer plate, tall deck sleeves, run the block dry with water in the heads and a pop off valve to relieve pressure good to go!😂
It may even be a longer stroke if you look at the width of the spacers. Look close at the head to manifold spacers…they look extra thick.
About the most redneck looking stuff I’ve seen.
If you look close at the rest of the details on the engine…masking tape wrapped around the fuel lines, hose clamps around a stud in the head holding the pop off valves, not a non rusty bolt or worn out hose or fitting in the entire boat, oh, and the non angled breathers on the valve cover looks really sharp. Hard to believe that it even passed tech inspection!

I agree that the motor is stroked. If you look at the oil pan by the motor plate the pan has some pretty good kick outs for the rods. A lot of work but that's how they did it in the old days! I remember Reiner & Morrison would cut chevy aluminum heads apart,reworked them, then weld the heads back together for their Pro Stock cars! Now you can buy better heads out of the box!

Was going back through the Tambert pictures and noticed a boat I had never seen before and a pretty famous one at that for a boat racing history Nerd like me.
I remember back a few years ago the son of Gary Carroll, who owned and drove the twin engined “Kwitcherbichen”, started a thread about finding his Dad’s old boat and posted pictures of it.

This is always the boat(it was a Wickens) that I remember.
His Dad drag and circle raced it(hence the “K” in front of the number) and held the Unblown Fuel Flatbottom 1/4 mile for a time.
I think the thread ended without any success of finding this boat.
So as I’m going through the photos that were posted I see this…

Different paint and
obviously re-rigged to just go drag racing with the 5 gallon Moon tank on the transom and the K designation gone from the number.
You’d think they used the motor plates and 2 into one drive out of old boat?
I’m guessing it’s a Hondo with the gunnel dip and what appears to be a badge on the dash.
Gotta wonder, like so many other boats of that era, where it ended up!
How cool would it be to find it!👍

I agree with you on looking at the vehicles and people in them!
How about that umbrella over by the building.
There were no “EZ ups” back in the day.
What you see is an umbrella that is slid into a receiver usually mounted on the engine or rails to provide some shade while working.
Some or the trailers had shade covers that attached forward and behind the fenders to cover the boats.
When we raced in the 70’s that’s just the way it was. Wasn’t till the early 80’s I remember any enclosed trailers.
There is no way with the boat count at Long Beach you could ever get one in there.
All open trailers behind pickups, vans, station wagons and a few Caddy’s.
And a blown fuel hydro could still run 200plus with usually a single engine for the weekend.
Different times.

There are some special times in these photos. At that time nobody would of expected drags boats to become the memory they are today.

When we found Sam’s dads old boat moody blues, we couldn’t figure out what this piece was next to the foot rest. We asked my dad (old school boater) and he said umbrella holder. Totally rad piece!

Kurt Collier in the Trick or Treat UGH.
One of the top three boats in the class back then.
Fast forward to a few months ago.
My longtime engine machinist got a call out of the blue from a guy wanting some engines built.
Turns out it was Kurt! He’s almost 80 and still has this boat! Wow!
I ended up helping my buddy get some parts polished and anodized along with helping him with the “Boat stuff” as he calls it.
Any way he’s putting a bad ass period correct engine in the OG boat!
Pretty cool to be a part of it.
Going to meet him when he comes down.

The “Cheese Monster”.
Perhaps the most ugly, bad handling boat I’ve ever seen run.
After many close calls it blew the deck off in Long Beach after a hard chine and the boat was retired.
Gotta give the driver credit for getting in that thing race after race!

I used to like watching the Cheese Monster make a bad pass. I though the boat was a Dragon Craft after looking at the pictures I don't think so.

It was always entertaining!
Definitely not a DragonCraft.
Was a one off for sure.
