You guys don't know how lucky you were, to get to grow up around these types of boats.
They were few and far between around here when I was a young kid.
And you never saw a circle track boat either.
A couple of V-Drives, but mostly Jet Boats with a back seat !

That's a very good point. Clank and I grew up right in the middle of Hot Rod boating. As a kid riding in the back of the camper my Dad got constant positive attention towing the boat. Thumbs up here "nice boat" yelled there. Most people didn't have Hot Rod boats then, but they were much more common. Our Hot Rod boat was our family ski boat. This wasn't an uncommon scenario for people.

It took getting on the boat forums 20+ years ago to realize many people believed our Hot Rod boats were one purpose useless early morning or late evening rides. People from the east coast didn't believe that these boats raced to Catalina island and back pulling skiers. The outboarders on the old Hot Boat forums were the worst and every once in a while, I still hear a Riverdaver or two echo this completely inaccurate perception.

We just don't see many of "today's" boaters in these Hot Rods. People today are different and much higher maintenance. It is what it is. Yes, now that I'm old and see what the boating word has become, I do feel fortunate.

Like Sharpshooter said, many of us were fortunate to grow up in an era where vdrive flatbottoms were used as family ski boats.

I feel I was beyond lucky as my boating as a kid was not limited to trips to Parker or a lake somewhere.
We boated/skied nearly every weekend and usually a couple times during the week in the summer with our boats because we lived just under 2 miles from the “Lagoon” here in Carlsbad.
If you have ever driven north from San Diego and saw the body of water to the east of the 5 freeway as you come into town with the boat landing, that’s Snug Harbor where we grew up beginning in 1968.
Sadly now there are very few powerboats even on the water. But back in the 70’s there would be 30 to 45 or so everyday on the weekends. It was heaven for a kid that liked skiing, fishing and fast boats!

Carlsbad was also home to Litchfield Custom Boats.
Most of the locals with vdrives had one.
Their shop was in downtown Carlsbad.
In the winter, I was down there nearly every Saturday to clean the shop and hang out with the guys. During the summer I’d ride my bike there and then head to the lagoon, usually was home just before dark.
When I turned 12, I worked at Snug Harbor emptying trash cans, general cleanup and bumming ski rides in the afternoon. That was also the year Kawasaki brought the prototype Jet Skis down for the summer to test, which we rode the heck out of during the week, but that’s another story!
Here’s a few pictures from this days.

Mom and Dad(with my two little brothers in the background) at the launching of or first Litchfield. It was a retired all wood unblown fuel boat that Dad put a 440 dodge in out of a wrecked CHP car( he was a Highway Patrolman).

The launching of any new Litchfield was always a party.
Here is a shot of a few of the people that were there.
Some of you may know a few of the names.
Left to right.
Guy in the yellow hat, Dick VanBeenan. Next to him Gordy Jennings Sr. Next to him Richard and Larry Thompson ( Richard would go on to own the Circle Boats, Stars and Stripes, Rolling Thunder, Distant Thunder and Freedom).
The kid in the blue jacket and red trunks is Rick Lathrop, great ski racer(as was his daughter Ashley) and owner of R and S trailers in Havasu. I’m in the t shirt and hat leaning against the grill of our Plymouth wagon.

Here’s our last Litchfield ski boat in 1974
It was a runnerbottom that was a legitimate 100mph boat that I drove at Lake Ming registered under my dad’s name when I was 15😂
Between my Dad and 2 brothers, we have owned 8 Litchfields. My brother Eric still has the one I drive in 1989/90 as a Super Stock.

That’s why you used the “flatbottom ramp”😁
I started backing trailers and pulling boats out on that ramp when I was 13!
Then of course you had to flush the saltwater out of the engine with it idling.
Always just tasted the water until the salt was gone.
Cracks me up when guys on here horrified about running their boats in the salt!
We never had a problem.
The Litchfield’s alway built open channel trailers for that reason.

Oh, and Booger, that’s me in the same design Litchfield shirt walking toward the blue boat in the first picture when I was 10.
The boat on the shirt is that boat when it was an unblown fueler.
Don’t remember why the zero had been rubbed off. 👍😎

Very cool Dave!

Here is a photo of me at 12 years of age with my Woodpecker shirt on with my back to the camera and a pic of the Woodpecker at Carlsbad a few years earlier.

Couple more pix one of the woodpecker on the side of Douglas mortuary on Birch st. in Hawthorne. as a backdrop and others from Carlsbad. We had Mixed Emotions for a little bit after the Wood Pecker burnt and Ted Phillips moved on to a D&H hydro.

Pitted next Howard Brown’s blown gas flat “How about That”. That was a big hitter in the day.
The Banzai set the Lagoon record that day at 154mph. Still stands.
What year and month was that? I am unable to find dates on the Peterson photos.

How about that, wood pecker and Mixed Emotions side by side. Ted Phillips is sitting in Mixed Emotions at the right of the photo.

Thanks Dave!

Awesome thread 💪🏼
I love seeing the nostalgic pictures & Litchfield brothers boats. The gold standard in flatbottom wood deckers in my opinion.
Craftmanship head and shoulders above the rest 👍🏼👍🏼

Love this. I appreciate the stories and photos so much. Shit was going on 20 some-odd years before I was born, and I too grew up with flatties as the family ski boats.. but I drive by that lagoon almost every day and usually imagine hot lapping along-side the freeway. So awesome it was once a reality. Thanks again

This thread gives me something to look forward to, I can't wait to have my dimarco on Parker for Father's day weekend. There will be some big power out there that weekend, with some great entertainers!

I’m obviously a little biased, but I agree with you.
They started out as finish carpenters and decided to built a kit boat in the late 50’s.
That led to them building boats for other people building the old style flats and transitioning to the more sleek versions of the late 60’s
George and Ernie never married and lived together their entire life.
George had a girlfriend in the early 60’s but nothing ever came of it.
They had a house a block off the beach in Carlsbad until they retired in the late 80’s to Lake Havasu City.
They ate nearly every meal at a little diner in Oceanside and wore the same color uniforms every day.
George drove their raceboat Benhad. The early boats had the same name but in small print underneath “but Damn seldom!” Pretty cool.
They built 100’s of boats over the years out of their 3 bay shop on State Street.
In their later years the would still crank out roll top desks and custom furniture.
I could go on and on as they were a huge part of my young life, but, I’ll leave you with one story that proves my point.

In the early 2000’s I picked up a wood deck Litchfield that needed to be redone.
I’ve known Harlan Orrin(one of the last old school wood boat guys still around) for years and we worked out a deal that he would build me a wood deck in trade for me rigging his Mandella for him.
I helped him strip the deck off of it and after we removed the mahogany off, he stood back and gave me a “huh!”
I said what’s up?
He said in all his years he’s never seen this.
I said what?
He tells me every wood deck he’s ever done or seen had the sub-deck plywood always running front to back on the deck but this sub-deck was running side to side.
I said, makes sense because it would be better that way to support the thinner main deck. Plus it had a slight crown to it that was unique to a Litchfield.
I asked if he could replicate it and he said No.
Not that he’s not a craftsman, but the brothers were truly incredible.

From the early 60’s the brothers always ran Unblown Fuel.
Our Blue Devil was the last all wood raceboat the had.
George always did the driving until he turned the seat over to Jack Cayer. My Dad drove for them at Long Beach at the 1976 Nationals.
Fun fact…they were the last ones to switch over to a runnerbottom in the Unblown Fuel Flat class because they had to build their own hull( third picture down).
Anyway their last true flatbottom still holds the record for the fastest pass ever(138 mph) in the quarter mile for an Unblown Flatbottom( the Panic Mouse we restored has the record (158mph) for a blown flat.)
Here’s a few of boats from the over the years.

George in the first three, then Cayer in the next two, then a shot of my Dad.

Here’s a sequence of my Dad disintegrating one of their boats at the Nationals in 1976.
Lifeline used this in their ads for a while because it shows how perfectly the parachute did what it was supposed to do and put him in feet first.
Saved his life and my Lifeline jacket, I’m convinced, saved mine.
If you’re gonna run hard get yourself the proper jacket.

Great pix Dave! Have you ever thought about starting your own boating forum? You and Jerry might think about it.

Damn! That's Brutal!
Walked away!
I didn’t see it live.
I was driving the truck and trailer.
Got to the ambulance pretty quickly!
That was back in the day where if the announcer said, “drivers take a walk” over the speakers, it meant get to the ambulance and form a human chain to keep the spectators out.
I tapped Bill Townley on the back and he let me through.

Yeah, there is nothing to worry about when boating in salt water.
:oops::oops:

Just kidding it is all about the maintenance after. Just snapped the picture in Venice and I had to post it.
Looks like my neighbors newer pontoon after being in a slip at the springs for a month. I didn't take any pics. But damn it looked hammered. Pressure washer barely helped. Sitting in storage at Echo if anyone knows a good detailer.

I remember this day. I was in the tow boat with your brother. Dean was going ape shit on the ramp, after the previous flip that tore up the transom hardware (boat Charlie is in below) bouncing off the rocks. Jim Newton was trying to calm him down, about that time someone yelled out "it's up" Jim & Dean spun around and jaws dropped, we had the boat on plane before Dave Bryant (R.I.P) was on the shore and off the rescue boat. LOL We weren't letting a boat get beat up happen twice.

This thread gives me something to look forward to, I can't wait to have my dimarco on Parker for Father's day weekend. There will be some big power out there that weekend, with some great entertainers!
You’ll be fine!
I’ve driven a few Dimarco runnerbottoms and every one did everything right. Especially yours will with the great history it has.
Driven Tom Farner’s straight deck Dimarco runnerbottom more than a few times.
Top picture was me driving and him riding on a weekend at Needles. Handled as good as K boat! Judging by the wind/cheeks folds, it was the other side of 90 in that water!
Bottom pic I drove it for him at Ming.
It ran 115mph.

Today marks 46 years that my dad has been gone.
He was a Highway Patrolman and passed in 1977 from injuries sustained in the line of duty.
Still miss him.
I’m always a little bit jealous of those of you that have grown into men and had your father side by side with you as you followed your dreams.
But the passion for boating and the river life he passed along to me and my brothers, well, I’d like to think he’d be proud of us and somehow I believe he is still with us as we continue to live the life that he enjoyed so much.
So here’s a few pictures I’ve not posted before of him.
Miss ya Dad!

First race 1970 in San Diego.
He won the 75-80 clsss.

Couple shots in dragboats.
Wish I had a few more of the other boats he drove. Different times in terms of pictures for sure.
He was not overly mechanically inclined, but the guy could drive a flatbottom for sure!

Won the SK Heat at the 1975 Race of Champions at The Stadium driving a boat called Cherry Mist, that used to be owned by our longtime friend, Dick VanBeenan.
Cool format..,the classes all raced their own heats and then all the winners raced in a final with a staggered start.
He led Julian in the Cold Fire for the first lap. Good times!
Picture from the heat race.

So because of all this, his Sons have made a lot of memories on the racecourse and at lakes and the River all these years later.
But most of all the friends we have made have been the best part!
Thanks Dad!
