Today marks 46 years that my dad has been gone.
He was a Highway Patrolman and passed in 1977 from injuries sustained in the line of duty.
Still miss him.
I’m always a little bit jealous of those of you that have grown into men and had your father side by side with you as you followed your dreams.
But the passion for boating and the river life he passed along to me and my brothers, well, I’d like to think he’d be proud of us and somehow I believe he is still with us as we continue to live the life that he enjoyed so much.
So here’s a few pictures I’ve not posted before of him.
Miss ya Dad!

First race 1970 in San Diego.
He won the 75-80 clsss.

Couple shots in dragboats.
Wish I had a few more of the other boats he drove. Different times in terms of pictures for sure.
He was not overly mechanically inclined, but the guy could drive a flatbottom for sure!

Won the SK Heat at the 1975 Race of Champions at The Stadium driving a boat called Cherry Mist, that used to be owned by our longtime friend, Dick VanBeenan.
Cool format..,the classes all raced their own heats and then all the winners raced in a final with a staggered start.
He led Julian in the Cold Fire for the first lap. Good times!
Picture from the heat race.

So because of all this, his Sons have made a lot of memories on the racecourse and at lakes and the River all these years later.
But most of all the friends we have made have been the best part!
Thanks Dad!

Me in the near lane and brother Rolf in the far lane

There is no doubt we have had some fun over the years at the River, Needles, the races all over the southwest, Irvine and even my little 2 car Garage shop here at home in Carlsbad!
Like I said before, it’s all about the people and boy, are there some beauties!😂

The summers of 71/72 we took a trip to Apache Lake in AZ.
What a beautiful lake. We camped within 25 feet of the water.
This trip in 1972, went out with a couple guys who had twin yellow wood decks except one was injected and one was blown.
Someone mentioned earlier about early tow vehicles. With three growing boys our choice of vehicles in the day were station wagons.
First picture is us loaded up and ready to go. Every inch in the boat was packed with something along with coolers on the running boards. If you look close you can see the old school surf racks with waterskis on them.
Great way to save some room!
Wish the color was better!

That black wood deck flat is so nice!! When I bought my Ellis trailer from him, it was tucked away in the shop under a cover. At that time, I don't think the boat had ever been run. Just runtime on the motor. Stunning for sure!!! 🥰
So you got to meet my old buddy Clyde Dedrick!
Met a lot of characters in my life, but he was one in a million!
Worked with him for years(20 plus) on many projects.
Great to my kids.
Him and his wife Susie made a few vacation trips to the river with us.
Had a huge heart.

You are right on the wood deck Sanger.
Boat was built by the great Ron Bolton.
Finished in about 2003, don’t remember if Harlan did the deck, but it was one of the last boats that Swede painted.
Ronny rigged the boat, built the LS7 for it and also refurbished the Trailer.
The engine was started at the shop and after they swapped it off the work trailer to the new trailer, it was started on the ramp at Lake Elsinore.
Boat was never driven.
Fast forward to 2019.
Clyde had started battling dementia.
I helped him pare down as many boats and the 2 AC cobra kit cars in pieces as I could and then he passed.
He still had this boat and the 1963 AA/F dragster I built for him.
Neither one had been loved on in years.
So I went over and brought the dragster home first to fix a few things and get it fired and then brought the Sanger over.
Rebuilt the carburetors and fuel pump. Changed out the impeller and a few hoses and the oil and fired her up.
Got it detailed up as well.
Dang pretty boat.
Ended up selling it to a guy in Pennsylvania. Walked him through everything when we sold it…haven’t heard from him since.
Mr. Dedrick was truly one of a kind.

I wish things like this were still possible at Irvine, great times back then!
I we
I miss Irvine lake! Boat shows, Father’s Day weekend and weekly test, tune and bench racing!
I went to a few of those deals at Irvine lake with Lightfoot. Good times. Lots of familiar faces in these posts from there and Foxs.

Yes Sir I had the pleasure of meeting him and picking up an Ellis trailer from him. It was parked behind the shop and had an older unknown make wood deck flat bottom sitting on it. The hull was shot and more work than I needed at that time. We drug the hull off the trailer and hooked the trailer up to my truck for the drive home.

Clyde walked me and my young son around his property, sharing all sorts of stories and tales of times gone by. He was a very interesting man and someone I could have spent more time with. I was sad to hear of his passing as I would have gone back to spend more time with him.

He mentioned Harlan several times that day, but I can't remember if he said Harlan did the wood deck on the black boat.

The rigging on this old Hallett is bitchen. Nice guy and great work putting it together. Did everything himself which i like. Cant rem his name "as usual" but talked to him for a while. He worked for Lee for a while.
His name is Mike Goins. He did some of the rigging work on Steve Delight's "Home Blown" Schiada flat also.

@Sharp Shooter If you don't mind, I'm going to steal the P-40 pics for our family archive. Kort was may dad's best friend and my godfather. I watched the boat race a ton of times and never ended up with any pictures. I can't tell who's driving or riding, but I think Leach drove it quite a bit back then.

Have a buddy who scored himself a new Allison Prosport. 1st stomp of the throttle and I was bumping the limiter in a hurry at 88mph. This boat will see triple digits with the right prop and elevation, no problem.

Those pics are part of the Arizona Navy archives that were given to me. 👍

Passing it down generation after generation. :)

I took my kids for rides but had to borrow Lou's Boat to take the family out. Very generous that RCL is. 👍

Oh…he’s a giver😂
Picture from Irvine…those were good times!
Thanks for all the pictures!
How about the time Rick King flopped his boat over and we went into full race mode and had him ready for the second round of the K boat challenge!
That was fun.
