The clock is ticking for Tesla customers looking for incentives on their purchase.

The $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles is set to start phasing out for the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 after Dec. 31, according to the company’s website. The Palo Alto, California-based carmaker is the first to trigger the reduced incentive in the U.S.

While tax credits have helped boost electric vehicle demand in the U.S., they remain only 1.1 percent of the market. The federal government support was designed to decline once manufacturers reach higher production levels and reduce their costs. Two quarters after a company reaches 200,000 sales in the U.S., the incentive is cut in half to $3,750. Two quarters later, the credit amount is reduced by half again, and it’s eliminated half a year later.

A Tesla spokesman confirmed that the company delivered its 200,000th vehicle in the U.S. this month, so the full $7,500 tax credit will remain in place until Dec. 31. After that, the incentive starts ratcheting down and will be eliminated at the end of 2019, assuming there’s no change to the program.

Tesla increased second-quarter deliveries to Canada and had a significant number of vehicles in transit at the end of June, which may have reflected an effort to delay reaching the 200,000 level to “game the tax credit,” Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster speculated on July 2.

“The good news is that there will be increased demand in the short term once consumers realize the credit will disappear,” Munster wrote. “On the other hand, future demand has been pulled to the present, so Tesla may face a headwind in 2019.”

The Model S sedan and Model X sport utility vehicle can each cost more than $100,000. The Model 3, billed as a more affordable car with a starting price of $35,000, is currently delivered only in more expensive versions. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said June 5 that the lower-priced version will probably start being sold around the end of this year.

The tax credit is important for Model 3 buyers.

Too bad it was wasted on Model X and Model S buyers, where it didn’t resonate as a purchase reason.

Well, truth is that many here have bashed others for their opinion of how Tesla is an American company employing many citizens....

So here we find out that he is just following along with the grain of the rest of the industry. He does not give one shit about America, only money.

IMO he's just showing the real Elon Musk, no surprise to me.

GM and others only have Factories over in China because THEY FORCE you to build one in order for you to sell vehicles in China, while they steal all your tech and designs.

Nothing good comes to America from that, it's just more sales for the shareholders and intellectual theft for the engineers.

Thank god we have a President who is attempting to take the dick out of America's butthole that previous administrations gladly let the world ram it in.

You are dodging the actual fact that China prevents you from selling cars at all via trade tariffs unless you build a factory there. It's complete bullshit, and is just as destructive to our economy as the imbalanced trade issues our government gladly put us into.

Cat is out of the fucking bag now, no way to change the fact that they can and do rip off American designs and tech for their OWN companies in China.

I'm not aware of a Tesla dealership near me where there are vehicles that can be test driven. I always thought part of the Tesla model was to not have dealerships where cars were on display and that all of them had to be ordered.

They have a dealership in Cathederal City and a showroom in Palm Desert on El Paseo. You can drive one any time you like.

Chinese automaker GAC is building electric vehicles in quantities that actually represent real ability to expand the market into a significant portion of total sales.

Another Chinese manufacturer, BYD, is also selling huge numbers of EVs. The Chinese market purchased over 100,000 EVs in December 2017.

Story about new $6.5 billion GAC industrial park:

We have been talking a lot about China at Electrek over the past few months, but that’s because it has quickly become the largest electric vehicle market in the world and it’s likely to keep growing with the government’s mandate.

Now one of the country’s biggest automakers, GAC Motor, announced that they started construction at a giant $6.5 billion industrial park to develop and produce electric and autonomous vehicles.

It’s one of the biggest investment of its kind.

The park will be located in Guangzhou’s Panyu district on 5 square kilometers. At the location, GAC Motor will build a new electric vehicle plant, which they expect to be completed by the end of 2018 with a total investment of 4.69 billion yuan (US$679 million)

They claim a production capacity of 200,000 units per year.

Saw a white model 3 in Parker Az. this morning towing a Bayliner or Crownline. It was leaving Circle K and heading up river. What is the tow capacity of a Tesla ?

They will HAVE to raise money very, very soon. The only thing propping up the stock price right now is the dippy publics opinion of Elon Musk. When that is disrupted, look out below! I live fairly close to Fremont and know people(contractors) that work there. 100% shitshow all the time, everyday.

In an analyst note delivered to clients Thursday, Gill cited extended wait times for the car, the expiration of a $7,500 tax credit, and the fact that Tesla has not yet made the $35,000 base model of the car available for purchase yet.

Worth watching Munro revises their costing and finishes Model 3 report.

Sandy Munro is a sharp cookie. Id love to see that report. He's got EVERY nut. bolt, zip tie, and ounce of glue accounted for.

Will be interesting to see how fit and finish get worked if they arent.

the rest seems to be the best EV yet with military level hardware and system integration.

The actual profit on the car allows telsa to make its numbers with lower production run that elon has quoted and currently (seemingly sustained)
the tesla team has known all along and Why elon is saying he won't need (much) if any more money.

Even the base model that slipped to the back of the line is profitable.

30% in the EV world is unique to this rig at least today.

This was a long fought war between Elon and the analysts.

Sandy isn't the only one eating crow on this finding.

Well it is also 40% more expensive than most of the "commuter" EVs that have similar production numbers. We all know the hard costs to make a base car into a loaded car are pennies on the dollar for the increase in MSRP. I was not one of the ones that said the car would not be profitable. It is what they do with the profits that is concerning.

IF he didn't have a years run of them presold Id worry more about what it costs - but people are happily paying the higher price.

when you run out of these guys you cut the package down and sell them cheaper - the heavy lifting is already done.

Other than brand zealots, I still don't get why someone would wait a year for a car. Tesla needs that cash now, not a year from now.

Neither here nor there, but most that have those budgets for cars, seem to lease them. That payment is still closing in on $1K per month typically.

The Tesla has enough range I could actually use it, but I'm not getting rid of my CTS-V for one.

People are also happily cancelling their Model 3 orders and demanding a refund. The estimated 24% of cancellations translates to refunds in the amount of $170M. That will result in a 2Q $700 million plus loss for Tesla.

When people that put a deposit on a $35,000 car realize they won't receive the vehicle for another 12-18 months and absorb the reality their $7,500 tax credit will not happen, it is going to accelerate the number of cancellations. The $35,000 Model 3 was supposed to be the cheap Tesla, the car for Everyman. The cost is going to increase 21%, and that is going to push some deposit holders out of the market. When the TTL is added to the base cost, it's a $47,000 car.

I'd say at least 50% of the people that thought they were buying a $35,000 car were stretching their budgets to the maximum to afford the car. This isn't the same group that has been buying the fully optioned Model S. These are people that were counting on the $7,500 tax credit and a monthly payment around $620-$670. Now they are now looking at a $765 to $840 hit. If the other 50% want the car sooner than 4Q 2019, the options they will have to accept will push the payment to $940-$1,100.

Tesla's price per share is approaching the all important psychological barrier of $300. When it closes below that mark, it's possible the freefall that some analysts are predicting will come to pass.

I hope you are wrong. There is no reason there needs to be a tax incentive. The American Taxpayer is getting fucked hard enough, I'd like to seem them remove it entirely, and pass on the road tax fees to EV's as well. They do just as much wear as any other vehicle.

Cmon Mechanical Man, this is a good thing. Made in America putting more taxpayers to work. Tax payers get benefit back in form of better health and environment, by reducing SMOG, Noise, Asthma, COPD etc…. We need more of these on road and less of carbonators. BTW: road wear and tear is limited to 1 lane: HOV lane.:D You should become a authorized service center for Tesla, your hands wouldn't get so dirty.:p

Lets say 25% happily cancel - it doesn't really matter because the other 75% are happy to take their place an actually increase their existing cash position well beyond the small amount it took early on to simply have a reservation number - he started converting when he opened the order entry system up a few weeks ago.

Even if 50% of his pre-order base canceled he's still got 100% more cars lined up with buyers than he can build so the order cancellation boogeyman isn't really gonna bite him.

There is always something that can happen and he's far from out of the woods- but everybody's been waiting for that imminent collapse to happen since they went public in 2010.

Sandy Munro........I haven't heard that name in......forever. One hell of a businessman, and a pretty damn nice guy, to boot. Met him when McDonnell Douglas hired him to basically save the company. He gave all the right recommendations, but corporate didn't listen. Hence, no more McDonnell Douglas. Sandy has always had my utmost respect.

Americans can still work putting together car that the government isn’t subsidizing.

I’m actually ok with the government doing some subsidies for EVs, but not luxury EVs for yuppies that can afford the car anyway. The subsidies would do far more good getting more inexpensive cars out there for commuters.

Maybe Our tax dollars should go to subsidizing walking shoes ! tax dollars already go to cars , trains , planes and even bicycle paths . If non of them can support there own growth maybe people need to use what God intended , there feet !

So you think if +- 250,000 Model 3 orders are cancelled, the quarter billion dollar hit to cash on hand "isn't really gonna bite him? I think you're quite wrong on this one.

Those buyers lined up to spend $35,000, not $50,000 or $60,000. Considering 2017 electric vehicles sales for the entire US were 199,826 (source: InsideEVs), the likelihood of Tesla finding new buyers willing to pay the exorbitant cost of the upcharge Model 3 and recovering those sales before the end of 2018 (Hell, 2019) is not good. There is a limited supply of people willing to live in Guyana and drink the grape punch.

The bill you speak of was introduced into committee in June, and there haven't been any hearings scheduled to debate it. Considering its authors were Democrats and the only other sponsors it has are two other Democrats,

In April 2018, Huffman, together with Jerry McNerney, Jamie Raskin, and Dan Kildee, launched the Congressional Freethought Caucus. Its stated goals include "pushing public policy formed on the basis of reason, science, and moral values", promoting the "separation of church and state," opposing discrimination against "atheists, agnostics, humanists, seekers, religious and nonreligious persons", among others. Huffman and Raskin will act as co-chairs.

Rosen:

Rosen was born in Chicago. She attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1979. While she attended college, her parents moved to Las Vegas, where she also moved after graduating. She took a job with Summa Corporation, and worked as a waitress at Caesars Palace. In the 1980s, she began to work for Southwest Gas, and then opened her own consulting business. While working for Summa, she attended Clark County Community College and received an associate's of applied sciences in computing and information technology in 1985.

A former computer programmer with no political experience, she was asked in 2016 by then-Senate majority leader Harry Reid to run for the U.S. House seat vacated by Republican Joe Heck. She has served as the president of Ner Tamid, a Reform Jewish synagogue in Las Vegas, and cited tikkun olam as a key part of her decision to enter politics.


None of these sponsors or this bill will get any support from Republicans. The bill is going to die in committee. With the TDS infecting every Democrat in Congress, hell will freeze over before Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Majority Whip Steve Scalise give the Democrats a scrap from the table and schedule this bill for a vote.

The Republicans aren't going to give away another ten years and billions of dollars to an industry which should stand on its own two feet if the claims that EVs are going to take over the planet in a decade are true. Rosen is one of the weakest candidates for Senate in the fall election. She was elected on the coattails of the Harry Reid political machine, which has been splintered since his retirement. If Rosen's challenger in November has a pulse, he should be able to beat her.

OK, Elon always has something up his sleeve to Trump the doubters. Don't forget he has contributed a fair amount of money to Republican Party and $50K to organization led by McCarthy alone. His SpaceX spends alot money with Republican backed companies in rocket industry and has considerable support. His Solar and UPS companies also use product from many republican backed companies. He may align better with liberal idea, but He's still a capitalist like many republicans and he snubbed California to build his latest gigifactory in what was considered a traditional Red state Nevada. 6274 may not happen, but something similar will.

Does tesla have in-house financing ? And if so do they offer leases?

I am wondering if they have any chance to make money off the loans or move some of those that thought they might be able to buy a 35k car but can't afoard at 60k to a lease?

I don’t believe they have in-house financing (tho I could be wrong about this).

But they do work with (steer you toward) affiliated banks through their lending program.

They do offer leasing.

And I’m sure they get a cut when you use them to find you a loan.

Ya I figured they have "affiliated" or perfered banks they work with, but thought maybe they could find money in creative leases if they did them?

So you think if +- 250,000 Model 3 orders are cancelled, the quarter billion dollar hit to cash on hand "isn't really gonna bite him? I think you're quite wrong on this one.

Those buyers lined up to spend $35,000, not $50,000 or $60,000. Considering 2017 electric vehicles sales for the entire US were 199,826 (source: InsideEVs), the likelihood of Tesla finding new buyers willing to pay the exorbitant cost of the upcharge Model 3 and recovering those sales before the end of 2018 (Hell, 2019) is not good. There is a limited supply of people willing to live in Guyana and drink the grape punch.

This position has already gone nowhere for a couple of reasons -

1. the guys lined up to spend the money arent "surprised" the cost isnt exactly new news to the guys putting deposits down The "35K guy" bailed long ago.
Something like 90+ % of depositors are happy to spend more.


2. Elon simply gets more money from those ready to spend it to cover, and with a huge lineup the cover money is equal or greater.

Its the getting more money from the guys still in line part that the analysts are missing here.

The shorts totally blew it saying the battery was the gate, then that production was the gate, so they keep looking for ways to justify their positions.

Gill in particular - blew it pretty bad.

There's a good reason why the $985 million in customer deposits is on the liability side of their balance sheet. Tesla is obligated to provide either a car or a refund in return for that money.

The deposits represent over 40% of Tesla's cash on hand, and it's going to play a large role in the Final Act.

After repeatedly stating Tesla won't need to raise more cash in 2018, Musk will have to do just that in the third quarter. This time his preverications will have a more serious result.

Uncle Daves Answer - The refund %(whatever it is) isn't made up solely of people canceling because of cost.
Many are canceling because of time - they can't wait for their car anymore.
You have never once acknowledged he can replace that money from the % that did not cancel its as though these guys don't exist in the formula - why is that?

He may have to raise more cash. His stock may move 20% either way.
What it won't do is collapse because of its global momentum beyond the US.

Why is wall street hanging on? that's the real question. Are they all stupid and only you can see the obvious truths?
like Munro says - the last time he saw tech like the model 3 was when he looked at the f35.
He laughs at the build but admits a hundred different guys can help with that but no one does a better job at the drivetrain and control system.

No one even comes close.


A question to RR - how do you feel about Gills prediction you proffered to us/ endorsed - as 2500 batteries a week production limit as the reason he would miss the production number - that he did not miss. Remember the numbers Gill put up?
