"Medium voltage", "1000 to 35,000 volts"

I just ran a new sub panel in an outbuilding...typical 220 stuff...about shit myself when touching the thing and thunder cracked outside and the lightning flashed through the windows.

It wasn't even conected yet on the other end🤣
We consider everything over 35kv high voltage;)

In the last hour, I have gotten the Spectrum Internet service warning that service could drop on Sunday, an SDGE warning that power and gas should be impacted and the city stated the water could be impacted.
+ 1 from the state 😁

Never bought a car in a hurricane - but doing it on Sunday, Sunday, Sunday

WOW that was a strong storm, lightening all the way from Laughlin down to Needles, very strong wind, rain was pouring down, power poles down, power off at the river house for about 2 hours, back on now, just as I was hooking up the portable air and genny power goes back on...very thankful.

Back in the early 90s I experienced something similar. Somehow I had become proficient in diagnosing and repairing the TTL circuit boards that made UPS systems of the day run. It required reading board schematics and looking for the problem. I would use my oscilloscope and probes to find issues, then remove the board from the machine and replace the defective chip, capacitor, or resistor.

Those old UPSs had huge transformers, SCR driven rectifiers and inverters, and lots of cooling fans. The sound produced when running was over 75 dB. One afternoon I had my head and shoulders waaay inside a huge 480 volt 500 kVA unit while it was online, holding two scope probes and trying to hook them on a board. Just when I touched the probe to board, my pager, set to vibrate, went off.

I somehow managed to keep from shitting my pants, and I think my life passed before my eyes while extricating myself from the confines of the machine.

You grew up in Glendora and I grew up in Monrovia I always wondered if we ran across each other. I'm 50. I did a lot of dumb shit and got my act together just like you.
What schools did you go to?

It’s been raising hell all around in Havasu most of the day, but not a drop at my house.

One of my clients called me and said they are thinking of boarding the windows up in Mission Viejo, and asked what I wanted to do about the computers. I almost busted out laughing, but reassured them we have battery backups and systems in place for this.

People have lost their minds.

Don't recall the last name. New a bunch of temple city folks. My daughter is about your age born in 94. Had her right before my 21st birthday. She went to Monrovia high as well.

Pic and Text copied from 'Wavecast' . . . 45 Foot Seas !!! . . .

Surf Forecast:

Today (Friday the 18th) around 3:00 PM Pacific time, Hilary was pumping up those anticipated 45' seas from just 800-850 nautical miles from SoCal (model generated by XyGrib from NFCENS data):

Swell is on the way from this position, which works out to impact-arrival (with other swell preceding it) around 6:00-7:00 PM Saturday the 19th at the center of LA. Swell should arrive earlier farther south and later farther north, but this is from the impact band. Rogue waves could come ashore well before this initial impact that could easily rush up farther onto the beaches and pull debris (and people) far out in outflow currents. Those rogue waves could occur at any time during the day Saturday the 19th. This particular band of swell is just the initial kick-off. A second band of heavy swell should be sent from Hilary when she is positioned just 600 nautical miles from SoCal around 2:00 PM Saturday. This second band could produce slightly bigger surf, but at the very least keep swell going well into Monday the 21st. Thus, the peak size for Hilary's swell should be seen across all of SoCal Sunday the 20th, lasting into Monday the 21st — but with swell building in the evening Saturday the 19th.

Peak size when Hilary's swell reaches SoCal calculates to 16' face heights at breaks with exceptional SE exposure, but that's the top end of the calculation for the perfect scenario (the most standouts of standout SE breaks). Most standout spots should expect DOH waves, and other south facing spots should expect waves 1-4' overhead. Size will vary greatly from spot to spot as this swell will come in from a steep 160° from SoCal, missing some spots while others have bathymetry that can channel that energy nearing TOH. Periods will run the gamut of 12-20 seconds, making rogue pluses intermixed with smaller consistent waves. Once again, the ETA for this is by early evening Saturday the 19th, with pounding surf after dark, and a major impact before dawn Sunday the 20th, lingering into Monday the 21st, backing off by the morning Tuesday the 22nd. But Hilary's swell won't be pretty.

High winds will ensue from Hilary, reaching 30-40 mph (sustained, with higher gusts) around parts of SD and OC, 30 mph around LA, and 20 mph farther north (model by FNMOC):

FWIW Hilary is showing a Vapor Tail the extends across the Pacific to Fiji. That's how it is receiving its moisture. That's one hell of a Vapor Tail. The Southern CA Weather Force guy is currently doing a live feed on FB. Appears to be drinking Coors Light in the bottle. Can't be a bad thing.

Have you ever looked into that guy? Google Kevin Douglas Martin.

Weather report from Prescott Valley: cloudy, and a pretty gnarly light show out west of me, maybe 30-40 miles out? I hope @wash11 and the Fort Rock crew are good.

I grew up in Covina...south of Badillo and Glendora Ave. Had friends in "Baja" Glendora and Glendora proper. If you were involved in automotive fuckery of any type (racing, mini trucks, stereos...) our paths probably crossed. My wife went to West Covina, me to Charter Oak, both class of '95. She was more the straight and narrow....me, not so much 🤣

Wait. Hang on..we are close to a life threatening hurricane in North sd (my home) and south OC (jbnsocal home). If one of us doesn't make it through this eminent act of nature I cant leave it this way.
He says he isn't a nut guy, so he will probably rim a guy. I don't want to disrespect him with false statements

Since Southern California has not had a true tropical storm or worse hit since 1939 the possibility of flooding like I have seen see hit other places seems possible
So I have purchased 60 gallons of gas for my backup generators if the storm is no big deal it will only take about 2 months to use it all in our cars but if needed will keep me living normally for at least a week and just had my 1500 gallon diesel tank filled
I also have 1/2 pallet of Dave’s MRE’s left
I already have 1 emergency delivery tomorrow of rock bags for an erosion control contractor
And have confirmed my ability to respond anytime with trucks and drivers for other customers that do emergency cal-trans work and railroad work
This could be an interesting next week

Man the clock is ticking on the expiration date on those MRE’s, might start cracking into them now before they start to be inedible …

It's a beautiful night in Bonelli Bluffs. No pictures, saving my flash for the flood.

Lake Piru shutdown all small craft and jet skis for the weekend. If plans go correctly will be a nice quiet day at the lake tomorrow 😂. Oh and maybe I’ll remember to top off the truck on the way home. Maybe staring at 2” and winds to 30. Nothing in comparison to Santa Ana’s at 70 like a couple years ago.

Started to rain on and off with some heavier spurts about 30 minutes ago at the river. By the looks of it we should be getting the worst of it later tonight and Sunday. Slow and steady its a nice change, crazy downpours dont bother us, it is when combined with the 50-70+mph winds that the power starts to get effected. I have to hand it to the power guys yesterday, drove on the 95 just north of Arco in MValley and a power pole was tilted towards 1/2 way down towards the street and 5-6 other poles were being pulled down with it, we lost power for a while but they had it up and running very shortly. Video was from yesterday when the rain let up across the river from us.
