Good luck Dave!

I quite back in May. Used Chantix and it worked for me. The dreams alone were worth taking the pills, that shit is wild. I still want to smoke, mind you, I rarely think about it. I still drink, and still like the smell of them. But I haven't broken, and it does get easier. I found the hardest thing was to break the routine. Get up, shower, smoke. Get in the car, smoke, etc. That took a while to get over. I still have part of a pack sitting in a bowl in my front hall. I always figured, if I was going to break, I would be pissed to go out and buy a pack for one. They are still sitting there.

You can do it.

I don't think it's a matter of everyone being the same as far as desire to smoke and quitting go. It's a personal thing and we're all built differently to a point. Lots of similarities, but we are each somewhat unique.

I smoked from around 20 until 25. Pack+ a day. Liked it. Got a lung issue going clearing very dusty area on a bulldozer and had to quit smoking as it was painful to take a drag. Never smoked again for 20 some years until cigars came along in popularity. Started smoking cigars, but didn't inhale deeply. Next thing I know, I'm bumming cigarettes.....Then I smoked one and got dizzy and nauseous. Put it down and have not smoked since. Now even the smell makes me sick. And I have lost all desire and hate the smell, lit or unlit.

I found the desire took many years to leave, but when it did, it was finally over.

My wife on the other hand, smoked casually from early teens until her late fifties. She smoked like a 1/2 pack a day, most at night with a cocktail or glass of wine. One day she just put them down and hasn't smoked or desired one since. No real reason, she just said she didn't want to smoke anymore and hasn't.

Everyone is different as I've said. But to quit and stay quit, I firmly believe one must want to quit and mentally believe it. Until then, relapses will be continuous. The hypnosis likely works better on some than others because of that internal want to quit. Do whatever it takes to want to quit and you will succeed......Determining how to acquire that "want" is the hard part and the goal to quitting. Figure it out

Dave,

I wish you the best! I suggest you try and do anything to quit. The symptoms you state you are having are not good at all.

My only advice is every time you want a smoke or just a drag - go lick a dirty ash tray completely clean!! I was told that by a therapist one time and since then - no smokes. Only licked an ash tray clean one time and that taste changed my life forever for the better when it comes to cigarettes.

After chewing since I was 16, February 23rd 2018 I stopped. Hard as fuck but basically quit cold turkey.

There was never a time I was driving, on the boat/water, drinking, working that I wasn't chewing. Seriously maybe 4 hours a day I was awake that I didn't have one in. Everyone always knew I was the guy they could grab one from because I always had at least 6-8 cans in my truck or 2-3 cans in the boat at all times.

I've heard nicotine leaves your system after a few days and after that it's just the habit you're craving. Bullshit, I wanted to crank the skull off everyone...including people who were actually pretty nice to me. I would say it was over 2 weeks of detoxing and maybe 3 months of pure hell for myself and everyone around me.

I guess it's cliche but you have to WANT to quit.

for me it was changing my life style. = diet and exercising more, not drinking hardly at all.
not that I smoked a lot. off and on for 35 years. but never a pack a day. unless I was at river.
saw my dad go through a bad sickness caused by smoking and drinking , poor diet and not exercising, by the time he quit smoking it was to late.
he lived another 10 years. but always in pain. they wanted to start taking limbs off and he just fought it. until he couldn't fight any more and just gave up.
I lived a very active life style, soccer, skiing, biking. but still smoked.
finally my own stress of why am I fucking smoking. made me quit cold turkey 12/30/2010.

with having one of, if not the leading premier boating website / forum in the world. its going to be super tuff.
everything about boating, off roading , and freedom enables a party life style, drinking, smoking, diet , friends coming over emptying the cooler and your smokes , all the different events your involved in , through out the year. all caters to smoking.

so what I'm saying your pretty much fucked. unless you have super strong will power.

I would start with doing some type of activity/exercise that you really enjoy. don't kill yourself. but maybe that activity will make you cut down , then you will see how much better you feel and then all together stop eventually . because smoking will prohibit you from taking it to the next level.
that's what I did.
I picked up mountain biking. riding is one of my greatest joys now. almost more fun then making 100mph passes in my boats.

Yes and it works - will make your stomach turn - I still have cravings like anyone but the thought of having to lick an ash tray again makes it easier and the craving subsides. You have to hold yourself accountable. Find something else to do after thinking about the ash tray for a minute or two. Excuse yourself from the predicament your in and take some full deep breaths of fresh air and drink some water. Before you know it you will be able to take deep breaths and stay hydrated. You also will be looking at ash trays a completely different way and cigarettes too.

Interesting that you bring up work, because that is a legit problem.. Most the business meetings I have with people they want to have at a bar after hours. LOL LHC is kind of a throw back to the 80's so there is a ton of smokers out here, more so than anywhere else I go.

That said, I have already cut way back on the drinking from where I was at before. If this hypnosis thing does the trick I'll probably not drink for awhile just to not have the temptation.

You are reading it as "Life Changes" when it is written as "Life Changes / Sometimes Life Changes" meaning..

That said I am making some changes in life to help with the success in this venture. Putting you on ignore on here is one of them :D Seriously though, I'm going to change my schedule to more normal style working hours, and start taking the dog for walks in the morning etc.. Less late night in the garage by myself, and more around people all day etc..

There's some other things as well, but I'm taking it one thing at a time here..

At least she doesn’t give him any stupid ultimatums... :D seems to really be working well

Good luck....I agree changes in small increments. Too much at once and the odds are against you. If you can quit smoking you will quickly notice a change in energy, eating, ect. Just change as many habits that bring you back to smoking at least for the first 3-4 months. Those are the hardest. Its been 7 years for me and don't think about it at all.

I think it's less than 15-17% of the US population smokes today as compared to the 50' & 60's, smoking's nothing to do with habit but just a straightforward chemical addiction. Most people I know needed help to stop,so look for a backup plan, check with a doctor for any type of patches, gums etc. Best of luck

Dave i have never met you nor do i know you that well. However i can tell you that it makes no difference to me that anyone around me smokes doesnt bother i dont care i dont want a cigarette. All the remedies that are out there you still have to fight the craving ZYBAN is prescribed by your doctor for the serious smoker and its an antidepressant so it makes you happy. Its takes away the craving and you will be a happy man i have tried everyone one of the deals on here a few times ZYBAN killed it once and for all! That was 20 years ago i smoked for 23 year 2 packs a day kool 100s

There is a lot of talk and chatter on these fantastic forums about personal accountability, honor, your word etc.

That is really the key to quitting successfully RD, hold yourself accountable, TO YOURSELF. Even if you fall off the wagon, get back on again!

Don't fall prey to your own mind and allow yourself to relapse if you sneak one, or go completely wild and smoke a pack while partying with some old friends etc.

Soon enough your own guilt will overwhelm you and force you to stay clean longer, until it is no longer an issue.

As said many times already, this is something very personal, you need to find the reason to stay quit yourself.

Stop bullshitting YOURSELF and just DO IT.

Every day wake up and make the decision to make better choices in your life, not smoking is a good one to start with.

Pulling for you man, you can do it.

Again... I don’t know you and you don’t know me but I will tell you my story and take it for what you will. I was never a smoker but I chewed tobacco for the age of 15 till almost 40. I loved it for many reasons but mostly I was addicted. I played baseball and that was the cool thing to do. Then I started working construction and it was totally acceptable. Most of my friends either smoked or chewed so it was a revolving door. Some would be smokers and then “have kids” and then it was the chew. Others just said fuck it and kept smoking.

To get to the point.... this year I was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland (at this point i have been chewing for 25+ years) and had to have surgery to remove a large tumor in my neck. The minute I thought I had a problem related to my selfish habit I stopped. I had stopped chewing for two years prior (but started a very stressful job and my senior super chewed so that didn’t help) and started again for another two years. I have two very young kids like you do and that was the game changer. I can’t imagin that my lack of balls to stop something that I know is bad for me would stop me from seeing my kids grow up and leaving my wife in a shitty situation would make me a shitty dad and husband and I pictured myself a failure as a human because of it.

Here’s how I see it... people like you and @OldSchoolBoats have been kicking ass in life and making it your bitch in tough times and these things are just small hurdles that can easily be overcome. You and many other have made great progress in situations that most would fail at.

I’m wired differently than most and can just cut habits, people and bullshit out of my life instantly. This isn’t normal for the general public and I finally understand that.

Dave... if for no other reason... please fight your temptation to smoke for your kids. Stacy obviously loves you the way you are but she doesn’t want to live life without you. With the way this fucked up world is don’t leave her and the kids to fend for themselves.

If you can turn RDP into a viable source of income and do what you want than quitting smoking is easy. Just need to stay with it and make it happen.

That statement sounds like your'e already in doubt and if it doesn't work you have an excuse for such...there is no trick to this Dave...it is literally mind over matter once you make the decision. The initial shit flushes from your system pretty quickly once you have made your mind up to set them down. Again good luck in your endeavors on this personal goal.

We printed out disgusting pictures of smokers who had lost major pieces of their faces, throats, etc and gave them to our family members. It got several of them to quit. We also took a few family members to a cancer center so they could see the patients in person. I used to chew cope and that visit rocked my world, I quit that day, thankfully.

I smoked two packs a day for 35 years. Then one day -- A hot bastard! -- Over exerted a tad and had to have a stent installed! ... Had a little heart episode... Cold turkey'd that day and quit for 12 years!. I can't stand the smell of cigs now!

I smoke cigars now! ... No inhale! ... And can stop anytime. -- Have gone days, even a couple weeks with no urges, or desires for one!

Anyway, My brother smoked like a
chimney and after I got him started on cigars he quit the cigs within a couple days!.... Might be an option! ;)

I chew...got reasons to stop, but no balls I guess. I'm already kind of a dick, and the stories of mood swings scare me. When I was wound tight in the rat race, I wouldn't have put up with me. I don't know what to do about those. I tried quitting a couple times before, but, like you, I caved to the urges. In my case, I find I cut way back on tobacco when I'm on tedious fab projects...kind of hyper-focus on the task at hand. I think people are all different. Some can go cold turkey, some need a reason...I think I may need a good boot to the head. I hope you can quit. Never seen your kids, and only met your wife briefly. Some say it needs to be you doing it for only you. I don't think so...Most everything I do is somehow tied to my family.

Interestingly enough that is a lot of what is driving this. My left arm has been tingling off and on for months (been better lately, but all summer long), Sometimes I will have a tightness in my chest. Below my arm pit on the left side off and on most the summer I have felt like someone rubbed Icy Hot on my skin.

For some reason almost all of that went away a little while back. Now though I'm tired.. and I mean really freakin tired all the time. I'll get up at 9-10, and I want to take a 2-3 hour nap at 4-5.. It's literally everything I have to get out of bed in the morning, or after a nap and not just want to lay there all night until the next day. Anything physical and I'm on my ass the next day. I think I have a blockage as well.

Tomorrow we go in for labs.. Monday is the next Dr. Appt and then we are also going to the heart specialist for a stress test etc..

Ironically enough if I just do my normal routine and drink beers in the garage and smoke cigarettes I feel better the next day. I've cut back a lot lately on the booze, and it's harder now than it ever was..

Had beers on Saturday with my buddy John, but it was recreational, not the usual one after another till ya pass out. Had two beers last night with Headless Hula at the end of the night thinking it would help me go to sleep. It didn't..

Before I went cold turkey I tried to have my first chew 1 hour later every single day. After a few days I had my first one at 6 pm. I was so proud of myself I started back on early morning chew the very next day.

When I quit cold turkey I bought massive amounts of sunflower seeds. I'm still finding seeds all over the backyard, my truck, tool bags. I must have chewed seeds twice as much as tobacco. And then one day my girlfriend noticed I didn't have any seeds the entire day. It was like when forest gump was done running....I was just done and walked away.

Quit being an excuse maker and just do it. When you're busy with work you think it's ok to keep doing. When you're stressed there is no work you think it's ok to keep doing. Weekend is coming up, friends are coming over, family is coming to town, holidays.....All kinds of excuses can be made.

New years resolutions are for the weak who think they're doing things in a group effort only to watch other group members dropping out before you even get to start. If you do things like everyone else you will lose like everyone else. I don't care what the resolution is, if you need a resolution that means something else won. YOU LOST! If you have spoken the words that you want to quit....YOU LOSE EVERY TIME YOU HAVE A SMOKE/CHEW.

There isn't a good day or time to quit....EVER.

Quitting a habit you know is drilling tiny holes into your lifespan is the best gift you can give yourself.

I quit on New Years Day in 1999, but I started preparing for it in July. I used those six months to constantly examine what a terrible habit it was.

By the time January rolled around I had convinced myself I could do it, and it took the first try. A couple of years later I was telling someone that quitting wasn't that bad and I didn't have any emotional issues with it, and my wife said "You were a fucking asshole for six months". :D

So there's that.

I am almost to the point where we are going to have the "What it's like to be an actual adult" conversation.. LOL It basically starts with Ultimatums are what you give your kids, and other kids give to each other. Adults have conversations and goes up from there.. :D

Labs will be tomorrow morning. Was going to be today but the Labcorps computers were down and they were backed up 2+ hours wait to get them done. Follow up appt with regular dr is on monday and then he will refer out to the heart guy. Hypnotist is on Tuesday afternoon. :)

Good post and very accurate. The first sentence is extremely accurate.. I'd always set some goal and go so far and then have a smoke to celebrate the victory.. Every morning you wake up and say "That was my last cigarette.... RIGHT AFTER THIS ONE!"

I'm truly excited about what tuesday holds, and I'm hoping it is as the lady says it is.

I was really worried about drinking and smoking, the hypnotherapist provided mental tools to deal with it. I BBQ'ed and had cocktails that afternoon without smoking - and I had smoked for almost 30 years. You MUST be ready and willing to quit, in your own mind. A hypnotherapist cannot convince you to do something that you do not want to do. The best $500 I ever spent.

This approach is a good one - no drugs, and immediate results - AS LONG AS YOU ARE READY TO QUIT. THEY CAN'T CONVINCE YOU TO QUIT IF YOU STILL WANT TO DO IT.

I wouldn't be spending 5 bucks let alone 500 if I didn't want too.. LOL

I'm happy to hear another success story from the hynosis standpoint.

I wish/pray everyone here that stinks to have the will power to quit.thank GOD i never got hooked when i experimented 50 years ago.I seen pack of cigs yesterday here in Caly priced at $10.99:eek:If that aint enough to make one qiut IDK?BLOWS my mind how someone can enjoy something so repulsive..o_OI work in CDCR prison and they dont allow tobacco and havent for a decade now.I am blessed that 99% of family and friends dont,so never hardly exposed to the second hand stink

I am almost to the point where we are going to have the "What it's like to be an actual adult" conversation.. LOL It basically starts with Ultimatums are what you give your kids, and other kids give to each other. Adults have conversations and goes up from there.. :D

Go to bed at 4am wake up at noon. Drink and smoke all day. Never changed a diaper. Yea sounds real adult to me lol :p

I wish you the best! I suggest you try and do anything to quit. The symptoms you state you are having are not good at all.

My only advice is every time you want a smoke or just a drag - go lick a dirty ash tray completely clean!! I was told that by a therapist one time and since then - no smokes. Only licked an ash tray clean one time and that taste changed my life forever for the better when it comes to cigarettes.

I had a rule in my camp, If you use a beer can as an ash tray-pinch it. Then if you take a yank off it,,,,Go find your're own beer or sober-up

Tobacco, wonderful drug, all my dipping friends when we were standing around a campfire would surreptitiously spit on the guys feet standing next to him. Or long ago when I was carpenter the guys walking the joists, plate, or rafters would try to spit in your nail bags, good times!:D

I was hammered at a bar with H20SkiTooSlow 2.5 years ago. I bummed a smoke from the bartender, went outside to smoke it, while I was puffing away I said to myself "This is it. It's been 15 + years of this crap. I'm done". Later that night, I peddled my bike home, grabbed the pack I had in my garage and threw it away.

First 2 weeks were a bear (going to sleep was the hardest), but I no longer have cravings and the thought of smoking makes me want to puke.

Its all about will power. You can come up with a millions reasons to quit, unless you actually decide to quit, you never will.

Decide your done and that's it. It's only as hard as you allow it to be. Don't be a pussy and blow smoke up our asses on why it's so hard. It's not that hard. Trigonometry is hard.
