Dave should we make it interesting. I’ll donate 40 bucks if you can make it to the 1 month mark!
I offered my superintendent $500.00 if he quit for a year, 5 years ago. He didn't make it past three months. Last week he was diagnosed with a tumor in his bladder, Dr. is pretty sure smoking has something to do with it. When I googled it, smokers are at a higher% of getting bladder cancer. Lucky, they caught it early and it was just forming as cancer and they were able to cauterize it out. He will now have to go every three months and get a camera up his junk to see if it grows back. I asked him if he would have rather had the $500.

Smoked Kools (alot) since boot camp then Quit 20+ years ago, was VERY difficult, symptoms and withdrawals (both real and imagined) were 6months to a year, my family thought I was losing my mind ;) , still smells good to me still able to resist and have not smoked a cigarette ever since , not self righteous and not bothered by others who smoke . Its a bitch of an addiction for sure , Good Luck , I will say I gained weight and not because I ate differently . Good Luck set goals and when they are reached set another , then eventually you will back and say "I used to smoke"

Bladder and dick cancer stem from smoking. My wife's uncle had his dick fileted open to cut the cancer out. Pees into a bag now. He had bladder and dick cancer.

I don't know about anyone else, but having my dick fileted and pee bag don't sound fun at all.

Dave,

I’m glad to hear you want to quit smoking and just so you know it won’t be easy. I tried hypnosis and fired up a smoke on my way out their door. Ironworkers union paid for it so who cares right?

A few years later I tried the patch, made my shoulder itch, I said fuck it and kept smoking. Tried the pills and they were as effective as the patch…

2002 my wife said “We’re pregnant “! Wholly crap great news, I thought to myself I’m going to quit smoking, made it six weeks and failed…

2005 my wife said “We’re pregnant “! Wholly crap great news, I thought to myself I’m going to quit smoking, made it one to two weeks and failed…

June 2014 we are at our lake house, in the morning, I’m waxing one of the 300x cowlings on my DCB while my wife and two boys are sleeping. A few minutes later as I stood on a two foot step stool, I hear a little person crying! I turned around and there stood my oldest boy crying, I asked what’s wrong?

He said “When are you going to quit smoking? I’m going to miss you when you’re gone…

That my friend is what I needed to make me stop. I searched for anything but could not find it.

I felt weak because I could not stop, but non-smokers don’t realize how addictive it is. I remember planning on quitting and as my quit time got closer I just started shaking of just the thought!

Well just so you know it’s been four years now, and last year with the money I saved from cigarettes I took the four of us to Jamaica for a week including air fare…

I know so few people that smoke it’s amazing. Like maybe one person out of 50 smokes and it’s a pain in the ass for them. Sneaking out of party’s to have a cig behind their car, trying to hide it from their kids. Everyone knows they just had a cig because they smell so bad when they return. I used to smoke and I just can’t stand the smell anymore and can’t believe smokers don’t understand how brutal they smell. I like to smoke but the downsides are just not worth it to me.

I got some in an uber a few months back with my son and this car wreaked so bad like smoke I told the guy to turn around and take us back home. I had just showered and was heading to a party. I didn’t want my clothes to smell and didn’t want my 6 year old breathing that in for the 25 minute ride. I felt bad telling the guy but oh well.

Damn! I dont have kids, but this right here sums up whats really important in life! I could picture myself doing the same thing in the morning, at the lake house, enjoying life, waxing the boat! Then you get a wake up call like that. Real good read, thanks for sharing it with us.

It's easy to quit smoking. I did it 6 or 8 times.

Seriously though, think of it this way, quitting is hard so try not to start back because you just have to do it all over again.

I have been smoking regularly since I was 13 years old, it sounds so bizarre to say it in this modern climate, but back then just about everyone I knew smoked. Hell the high schools allowed smoking in the Quad and there was ashtrays everywhere.

Long story short, as much as I enjoy smoking I really just don't want to do it anymore. The idea of getting winded running to the end of the driveway and back is just kinda bullshit, and now that I'm getting somewhat older I'm just starting to feel like shit all the time.

There are some people that have smoked for decades that just put them down and walk away. There are others that have successfully quit on the patch or the gums. I've tried both so many times you'd have to take your shoes off to count that high.

Every single time I've failed at it. People can sit back and say stupid shit like "oh you just don't want it bad enough" or a host of other things that are similar. I can tell you every single time I took it to the absolute limit of sanity, and each time ended with an incident that dictated it was better to go get smokes ASAP than end up in jail or a host of other horrible things.

With that first drag there is a feeling of euphoria as the clamp releases from the back of my neck to feel normal, and sheer and utter disappointment and failure. It isn't like a "Will get em next time" kind of moment, it's much darker than that. It's "Do I really love these stupid fucking things more than life itself?" and the host of bullshit that goes along with that line of thinking.

There is a pretty renowned Hypnotist in Las Vegas that claims one visit and you aren't smoking anymore.. You won't even miss it. I called her up and talked to her about it, and she says smoke right up until you walk in the door, you are going to throw them in the basket on the way out. I asked her how many sessions this is going to take and she confidently said "one." In talking to her further she had some guy that smoked 2 packs a day for like 50 years and he came back for a follow up appointment, and is now a non smoker permanently..

Monday Night I'm going to Vegas with Stacy. I'm going to Have beers, smoke cigarettes and gamble until someone comes up to me and says "Hey man you might want to call this hotline" because on Tuesday afternoon we are going to go see the cigarette whisperer...

If this works (which I'm really hoping it does) I'll put her info up for the other members that are in this sinking boat.

RD
No bullshit... Friends dad did this exact same thing. It worked.

Other then that, you need to replace that portion of your daily life with something else. You are not going to like this but drinking water in it's place might help on many levels. You are also not going to like this, but replacing smoking with exercise will also help. When you get the urge, do 5 squats, or pushups, or walk to the end of the block then back. It's a mind change and addiction is real. Good luck.

I use the same method every year when I cut out beer to train for team running event. That is coming very soon. Sucks, but it's effective.

I started smoking around 16, I'm 39 now. I havent gar ab actual cigarette since st Patrick's day. I bought a gas station e-cig and have been using that and cutting it back every couple weeks, is it the same as a cig, hell no not even close. So you still really have to WANT to quit. I'm am now to where one refill cartridge will last me over a week. I feel 10x bettern more energy, food tastes completely different and I and the cab of my truck dont stink any more. And hell my ol lady will just come up and kiss me out of the blue now, we been together since we where 18 and she has never smoked cigs, I asked her wtf one day cause she hasn't done that since we where younger. Her answer was "cause you dont taste like a damn cigarette now" lol, ok I get it. The hardest time for me was when I'm drinking cause one beer and I'd smoke like a chiming. I have realized that my "hangovers" where not from drinking it was the pack of smoked I had while drinking..lol is the e-cig the best option, no probably not, but for me it's working so I'll stick to it until I can put it down too, my goal is St Patrick's day 2019 to be done and i think I'll actually probably be done before that. I honestly dont even crave a cig anymore. I had 8 smokes left in my last pack that has been in my glove box since St Patty's day, i actually gave them to a friend last week when she ran out, guarantee they where stale as fuk but she didnt mind..lol

I feel for you....and understand completely. Quitting cold turkey is impossible for me, and I have failed as many times. I've done the patches, gums, Chantix etc. and even did the hypnosis. Went back to them every time.

I smoked a pack a day for 40 years. Last FebuaryI bought a Juul vape. I was OK, but I needed somethign better. I bought a good vape and started at 18mg/ml of nicotine. Find a flavor you can deal with, and try them before you buy. Once you find one you like, use it. I smoked too for the first few weeks, and used the vape to replace a few cigs, then a few more. Eventually I was down to that one in the morning. That went on for close to a month (now 10 weeks in) eventually you have to make the choice with the vape and mentally say to yourself "this is what we're goning with". I am now 10 months in and down to 3mg/ml and doing about 200 puffs per day. I averaged about 10 drags on a cigarette and decided to limit it to 200 puffs per day.

You CAN do it... the vape is the only way for someone who likes smoking

I quit for good 2 years ago. I have smoked on and off my whole life since I was 13. Always started back up again because of this thing, or that thing that upset me, or "because I am not addicted, I can quit anytime, I have before!".

You got kids and a beautiful wife RD, if you are really feeling that shitty I am glad to hear you are heading to get checked out ASAP, you might be forced into quitting or dying from continuing to smoke.

If there is nothing wrong going on with your health other than lack of exercise and healthy eating, I hope this hypnotist works for you, one way or another smokes are going to shorten your time here significantly.

Myself I only have so many laps around the sun left, I want to spend them fucking someone who loves me, and boating as much as possible. Smoking does not fit into that equasion anymore. I love to smoke, have forever, but it no longer was the same as when I was young, it was truly just a nasty addiction in the end.

I hope you find whatever you need to kick the habit, it is not easy, but it IS important.

Good luck!

Quitting is tough excuses are easy. I’d be one of the ones saying you didn’t want it enough.

LOL.. I'm very well aware Vic, different personality types all have different reactions.. but they are nothing if they are not predictable in the types themselves.

I tried a Vape a few years back. They were newer back then so I'm sure things have changed by now. I'm not sure if it was petroleum based or the other one. Either way I started using the vape, and it felt like I was going to have a heart attack. Severe pressure in my chest, felt like panic attacks. Worse I felt the more you want something to make you feel better and I was hell bent on not smoking so I kept using the vape deal. It got so bad I threw it in the trash went back to smokes, felt better the next day.

I might go to a vape shop though and see if they have different stuff now, and try it again. I'm sure it's better than it was. That said I have read some of the health effects of vaping are actually worse than the damn smokes!

Has Caesars released odds yet :)

I tend to lump hypnosis and acupuncture right up there with Chiropractors.

That said my Dad grew up on a tabacco farm in MD and smoked nonstop as a kid until he had a heart attack one day at 66. He walked out after by-pass surgery and said he never had the slightest desire to ever smoke again and never did. So when you think about what happened to him, it was all phycological. One day he's an addicted chain smoker, the next day its 110% gone. So maybe there’s something to the voodoo lady. I hope so. Good luck.

You just haven’t been forced to quit yet. When the wife says you can do whatever you want but if you keep it up me and the kids are leaving, that will do it.

I've smoked on and off for 20 or so years. It's fucking nasty. Not even sure why I do it, or why I keep going back. Tastes like shit, smells like shit, expensive as shit, a pain in the ass when you run out, etc. It's just so stupid, but has a majority of Smokers by the Balls.

Good luck buddy! Hypnosis is how my buddy Mike quit.

I haven't chewed tobacco in almost a year, been on the Zyn Nicotine pouches and they have been great.

Slowly but surely....... I can go a few days without having one and actually drove all the way home from Havasu yesterday without putting one in.

All about the mind control. You just have to not give in. I quit drinking any beer during the week. After long days and opening the fridge to see beer it takes some amount of just saying you don't need it, have some water.

I never started smoking ever. My parents smoked. I lost my mother when I was 5 to cancer from smoking. So I've never even had the desire to smoke. I've known a lot of people trying to quit unsuccessfully . I will never know what your're going through. Dave,Andrew and the others. I wish you luck on quitting.

If you quit drinking it would probably be easier to quit smoking, IMO. If you can quit smoking and keep drinking, you are either a savage or a effin liar
Giving into the nicotine cravings after being a few beers deep is definitely a challenge.

I was told 17 years ago, when you quit, you have to know that you've quit for good. You can't have just one because you're drinking- one always leads to another. My dr gave me a month worth of Welbutrin. I took it for two weeks and couldn't figure out why I was taking it so I quit that too.
You have to change your habits. I was selling hay back then and would have a smoke on the way to see my first dairyman. Then one with the next guy I stopped at and so on. The day I quit I had to change everything up. It was actually simple. I saw the same people, but changing up my daily routine really helped. I also went through about a 1/2 bag of Dum Dum suckers. It gave me a similar hand to mouth habit replacement. I got tired of people asking why I always has a sucker so I quit that too. I got kinda good at quitting stuff along the way I guess. I never quit drinking, that was a little rough. That's where the willpower and absolute decision kicked in.
There's a Dairyman out here in NM you know (M35) that quit by hypnosis. It's pretty interesting to hear him tell it. He's still not smoking. Talk to him.
You can do this Dave. Better on your conditions as a choice than having a situation where you don't have a choice.

That’s good advice. The knowing you’re going to quit for good. Reading this thread it doesn’t sound like that.

No lectures, no mind tricks or encouragement. Go to the doc and get Chantix. If you want to quit you will. Chantix literally reprograms your brain (basically burning out all the nicotene receptors).
The program takes abouts 3 months but you'll likely be done long before that. I smoked for over 40yrs., tried hypnosis, tried the patch, tried the gum, tried the nicotene pills and nothing worked. Got the Chantix and two weeks later was non smoker. That was 3 yrs ago. Good luck.

Same thing happened to my boss at work a few years ago. He smoked for years, had a heart attack and was in the hospital for a few weeks. Kicked the habit and hasn't smoked since.

BTW..He was only 40 at the time

I don't know what I can add to help other than say what I did eight years ago. Everything I did seemed like it revolved around a cigarette, the thought of quitting gave me a lot of anxiety, but I chose something that I really didn't want to give up doing and that was going outside about every hour, but instead of a cigarette I sucked on a lozenge for a few minutes and then stuck it back in a baggie for next time.:D I was smoking around two packs a day and the lozenges aren't much of a substitute, but I guess it was the act of doing something. I was actually only using about one lozenge a day so after a couple months just quit those cold turkey and didn't notice a thing. The nicotine you get from the lozenges is absorbed though the skin in your mouth so being outside I just spit that shit out, because it will make most people sick swallowing it. I still like the smell of cigarettes unless it's too smokey, have never cheated and can't hardly believe I did it, but it really wasn't that hard and I know I felt just like you. Good luck Dave you can do it.

Let me just say this, if you do kick it don't even think for a second that you can take a puff or drag ever again. I quit for 12 years and went away to a bachelor party for a weekend where everyone was smoking, asked for a couple drags, by the next week I had a pack a day habit again. That lasted 2 years and was just as hard to quit the second time.

I picked my mom up one day from the hospital after losing half a lung and just losing a boob a few days prior.. She had a smoke hidden and lit up about 10 feet from the exit of the hospital, I said shit mom what are you doing, she said I'm going out the way I want. The grip is real and she never could over come it, but she was right, didn't really matter at that point. On the flip side, my old man a 2 packer since early teens after a couple good health battles he finally quit a couple years ago after a doctor told him he would be dead soon. As long as you don't stop trying it will stick one day.

If you quit drinking it would probably be easier to quit smoking, IMO. If you can quit smoking and keep drinking, you are either a savage or a effin liar
Guess im a savage. I quit cigarettes almost 5 years ago. Nicotine almost 4 years ago. Switched to vaping and then quit that, mostly because I got tired of building coils every day. I was already off cigs, gave away all my vape shit and luckily have only had a handful of cravings.

Drink like a fish still.

I couldnt do the "vape shop" vapes with the big batteries and shit, they kill me even on the lowest setting. This one I got from the gas station(or most convenience stores) alot more mellow and doesnt look like an 80s rock video when I exhale..lol I tried the fruity flavors and those are terrible, so just the original tobacco flavor for me. Took me a couple days to get used to. Now I'm to the point if I feel like a smoke, a couple puffs and I'm good, not a whole cig. Like I said in my last post, quitting smoking is the hardest thing I've had(wanted) to do in my life. I think(hope) I'll be able put this in the glovebox in a couple months and forget about it.

THe vape machines are not free from risks....are they as bad a cigarettes? Based on my lung capacity now, I would say no. I started working out again, and I actually started waterskiing again last summer and it felt great!!! Are there other risks with vaping....of course there are. Everything has risks, the risks of tobacco are well known and predictable. Vaping is TBD but, then again I am not planning on using it for 40 years.

I smoked a pack a day of Newport Lights for many years before buying the vape. The guy at the vape store recommended 18 mg/ml. I found that was pretty high (for me and had the same feelings you mentioned) and quicky went down to 12mg/ml. I stayed at 12 mg/ml for a couple of months. Then went down to 9, then 6 and now at 3mg/ml. I've bought a bottle of 0mg/ml but the final step off is still pretty hard. The stuff goes as high as 64mg/ml which would kill most of us normal smokers. The new vape machines have puff counters in them and you can keep track of how much you're hitting it. They are much more adjustable in terms of how much smoke/air and heat. My choice of vape juice is Halo Menthol Ice because I smoked menthols before I quit.

It's not a perfect system and I still have that final hump of going to zero but it's still better than the alternative. I do feel much better and I am not exhausted with routine tasks. I think my best bet is to start to limit the number of puffs per day from 200 to something less in increments.

Make the guy in the vape store explain to you what you need. Not what he wants to sell you. If they don;t have anything for you to try, then go somplace that does. Since you're going to Vegas, look there. There should be plenty of places in Vegas that will have machines and flavors for you to try.

The key thing is find something that you like, and will stick with. Tell the guy honestly how much you smoke. Pack of Marlboro Reds, Chesterfield Kings (yes I smoked Chesterfield Kings for many years), etc. You won't be the first guy who has walked in looking to replace cigarettes. Buy the small bottles of juice at first, and if what you bought is too much nicotine, or you're hitting it too often, then you can step the nicotine down to match how much you're using it.

Do the Hypnotist first, and if that works for you stop there. Keep this as a backup position in the event that doesn't work out. We're all rooting for you to succeed !

^^^^^^ this, I have watched people who had quit just to throw it away with 1 drag.
