First two cars finished. There was a rzr they said came in before us but he wasn’t on the trail. We saw no one and had to open the gates on the back side View attachment 1320082
We were movin!!! Good thing RD blew up because we saved about 2 hours today. Our average speed was 35mph and we saw a few points over 80mph. Great run

We stopped to hook up our pumper hoses and get the wizmo magic box set up on the R. Spoiler alert, you have to be stopped in this machine to switch to 4wd. Even just the active trail. Then after your dust settled, we had to get the map figured out, because it was easy to get turned on the last section of the course right there in the first couple miles. After that it was smooth sailing. It was nice to get long stretches of smooth graded roads. Easy to get in the 80’s. We didn’t set any records, and my poker hand was shit, but it was fun and we made it out only losing 1 whip. I regret putting those on. The tight trees ate them up all day. Also, those cows could have really messed some shit up. I wouldn’t want to take that thing on… they were next to the course in 2 spots.

So how was the course…?? They are saying top finishers in the race will be running a 65mph lap average. My buddy ran the course (off BITD file) a few weeks ago and said NO WAY!! He said the washes are reallllly bad with chatter bumps and he’s guessing more like 45mph average.

A few thoughts on this poker run. First off, how fortunate were we to actually run this in a somewhat closed setting. I'm not even sure how many participants there were, but I'd guess 20/25??? Maybe less. I bet that doubles next year, then it won't be as much fun IMO.

This is not a poker run for your family or buddies who are out to sight see and explore. You have a lot of ground to cover, some of it is rough as fuck, you need fuel, more that you can carry in a sxs.

We run Osborne wash, Shea Rd, hang out at the sand hill and the gauntlet every weekend. What we don't do however, is take these trails. Leaving the gauntlet, the start is super chattered up. Osborne wash, and then the other side of the aqueduct are crazy difficult because of the ruts. Normally you'd do what ever you can to avoid them, being that it's the course, you're in them. Pretty much you go into corners, they are deep and lean to the outside, and if you try and get out or pop up on top, you're in trouble. I came out a couple of times, and it literally throws your car out sideways. One time I slid sideways and went over a tree. I can't believe it didn't pop a tire or break something. Only a scratch in the bead lock.

After that terrain you get into some long graded county roads. They are curvy, so while you think you can just run flat out, you hit some S turns and you're holding on hoping you don't slide off the road. Most of the time you're telling yourself, don't touch the brake, use the gas pedal to steer. I ended op on top of a berm at one point, but didn't go over. I just told myself, slow the fuck down. lol.

You end up running some fence line after that, we were in front, we had to wait for someone to open the gates for us. That's a trail that I would run again. it's pretty fun. You end up on a narrow trail after and then back in a wash. There are some tight turns and g-outs but they marked the course with danger signs on some of those. Without the markers, you could get fucked up moving at speed.

Next was Midway, Midway is the stop the you hit twice, once before you head south, and then after the next big loop, actually its the biggest loop of the race. When we went by the first time, no one was set up there, the fuel truck wasn't there yet. By the time we made it back we had done 93 miles, plus the ten from me filling up and traveling to the course. I was at 103 miles. No bars left for the last 10 miles, and my dash flashing low fuel. Wasn't too sure I was going to make it back without being towed.

Next section you take graded roads, end up in the wash that goes to Planet Ranch and come out by Vulture mine. Then you head south off of Shea. I had no idea that trail was even there. It's a curvy rutted trail, not as rutted as the first washes, and the corners are banked pretty nice. You can generate some good speeds there and it feels pretty safe.

After that you cross over Shea with about 20 miles left, and that's the worst of the worst. It's all rocky, sharp jagged rocks, lots up climbing up and down, another trail I'll never take again. lol. Then back into Osborne wash, and curving back and forth to the start finish line.

When we got back they said a Rzr had gotten there before us, Im guessing he took Shea back, because you're elevated and there was never any dust in the distance. Doesn't really matter, it's not a race, but it was nice not following anyone and being able to push as fast as you wanted to go.

Super fun run, of you have the chance next year and would like to experience the course, I would highly recommend it.

Sorry MeCasa that we lost you. We stopped at Osborn and Shea and waited, called you on the radio, but figured that close to the start you must have gone back for something. Your buddy probably had a rough day in that stock Rzr I'm guessing. Hope you guys had a good time without any trouble.

Great report. Pretty close to what my buddy told me on how the course was. Sounds like it’s gonna be a good race. We are PreRunning on Wednesday, so we will see how the course is with everybody running it for the Poker Tun and PreRunning it all day Tuesday. It’s crazy how fast some of these sections change with a bunch of cars running them. Thanks for the intel.

Anybody interested in following us race day, we are car UM949 in the Modified UTV class racing on Friday.

That sounds fun. I’ll do it next year for sure.

How much gas did you actually need? I can do 150 miles or so with the extra gas I carry for longer rides.

So a full tank and 6 more gallons. I think the sandy washes use up a lot of fuel.

I just noticed my antenna is missing. 😬 wonder when it fell off. The Bronco had his whip ripped off too.

That sounds about right. I can do 150 miles with 5.5 extra gallons.

Yea I rarely run with the whips anymore.. the nice ones that don’t snap in half just get ripped off.

Did you lose the whole antenna or just the whip part?

Sounds like a great day. Thanks for sharing. That course is always tore up and the pre running, although necessary, only worsens it for race day.

Nice write up, glad you made it. Did post 28 help 😉

Been on every inch of that course just not all at once. LOL Not sure I could walk afterwards. Surprised more locals don’t run it or at least the area.

If you did it in a UTV and not a prerunner, you’d feel fine afterwards 😉

That was a great time. Kathy was having fun except for the last 30 miles. She was getting car sick from all the elivation changes. I needed to slow down for her. Being out front was key

I added 6 gallons at mile 93. I was down to 2 bars. That 6 gallons brought me up to full, or the fuel guy could have added more though. I saved 4 gallons for the razor that was with me and he got the fuel guy to just top him off for $10. I’m guessing not all the prepaid fuel was used by people so he had plenty of extra. I only saw 2 barrels in the back of his truck.

It was a lot of fun, and there was a lot of smooth stretches where we were able to maintain high speeds for long periods. I’m sure that sucked the gas down too.

I would definitely do that poker run again.

Were the ruts the type caused by rain that would get better as cars go through them?

? The last time they had the race BITD ran the course backwards. Did Unlimited change it back to the regular way?

I believe so. I have heard a few times its the same course as the last BITD race, just ran the opposite direction...

Only one big rain rut when we went through. Im sure its fine now. Several cars were on the side of the road there by end of day. They probably blew it out
