Anyone in maui right now? We are due to leave Friday morning but at this point I feel we have no business being on the island with the devastation. Wife is freaking out.

Prayers for anyone affected.

If at all possible, I'd cancel and reschedule for a later date. There's several areas in big trouble, the weather is nasty due to the severe winds being blamed on the hurricane despite it being 500 miles to the south.
National Guard being called up due to lack of 911 service and fire companies being overwhelmed.
Good time NOT to be on that island.

Yea I agree, just want to make sure the news isn't "sensationalizing" alot of it, because thats the consensus on reddit right now. Airlines are barley allowing changes at the moment, although 2000 people are stranded at OGC.

I was gonna say the wind looks awful in that vid. Makes sense that it would be.

How sad. 🙁

Having experienced this type of incident up close and personal I agree. I read every available piece this morning, the carnage in some areas is horrific, but other areas more than likely life as usual and others are dealing with nasty air and compromised utilities.
If you're going to Hana, you're probably fine --- but most folks will be heading to the west coast and that area is under serious stress.

My 16 year old daughter is there with a friend and her family. They took the road to Hana and are stuck near the ocean aquarium since last night. They waited in traffic for three hours only to find out the roads are closed trying to get back to Kaanapali. They had to sleep in the car and cannot get back. Really bad over there right now. I have no communication her phone died and a lot of cell towers are damaged.

How is this even a thing, with all the humidity and greenery? I'm guessing each island has it's own microclimates, I remember hearing that. Never been to HI yet.

Hope loss of life and property is minimal!

Maui is a desert on one side. Hardly gets any rain and very dry.

Airport is closed, devastation is unreal in some spots. You trip isn’t going to happen unfortunately, or at least it shouldn’t…

We have friends/family who have lost everything. Spoke to the wife of a friend who was working construction there who just this morning heard from him, no cell service, or power. Lots of chaos and little info.

What caused this? Power lines? I know they have been getting hit with heavy winds from a hurricane to the south

Brush fire and high winds…80+ gusts supposedly. Can’t do water drops. That side of the island is very dry… perfect storm of bad circumstances

The airport is open to fly the tourists out first and the governor has asked the airlines to stop flying in to maui. The airport is a make shift shelter at this point . Flights will be extremely limited. Lahaina is town has been devastated and a lot of the hill side homes have gotten hit as well. A few people who chose to stay in Lahaina had to literally had to jump in the ocean . The high winds are wreaking havic.

Being an island there is no quick mutual aid like here where strike teams just drive in from AZ, NV, OR..... they would have to load fire apparatus onto naval ships and transport them across the pacific or into C17's if they fit which I believe they would. Serious logistics to get strike teams over there to help.

I am currently in Hawaii. Going to all islands this week. Today was to be Maui. We scrubbed that and changed to Kona instead. Talked to friends and business members. They are safe but things are messed up. People are trying to get on and flights are full oeople are camping out near the airport while they try to exit. My week was crazy busy to begin now just more. I will post up info as I hope to get boots on the ground update from those who live there.

I wonder why the airlines havent canceled the inbound yet. They need to get tourists out only.

News is reporting the Lahaina Marina has burned. That’s a small boat Marina. Reports of large mega yachts burning seems questionable. But, a boat of any size burning is a bad deal.

My Niece and family live in Kihei, and heard they were evacuating, but can't get a hold of them by cell phone or text.

Absolutely devastating and I feel so sad for the people on the island. In December, we are scheduled to take or first trip to Maui for our family Christmas vacation. However, not sure going would be a good thing now. Last thing any remaining locals would want is tourists around while they're trying to pick up what's left of their livelihoods.

Terrible. Devastating. Believe each island has a dry side. Kauai does, for sure. Assume necessary precautions are being taken on each island.

Horrible news. I’m hoping it’s not as bad as the headlines. Hate to see what that does to home insurance rates over there.

My coworker is on his way there from Oahu. That airport is sketchy to land on normal days. Today is gonna be white knuckle.

My Mom lives in Kihei. She is safe and was set to fly out next Friday to be back here for a month or so, may not happen now but we'll see. I imagine in 10 days they should be able to get airport back up and running normal, 1. winds should subside and 2. It's gotta be priority #1 to have that airport as functional as possible.

Looks like there’s a last few flights landing at the airport. When I zoom out to all the flights over the Pacific from the West Coast, none of them are tagged as going to OGG, and looks like a lot of them may be diverted to Honolulu.

Kula and Makawao last night.
Damn. One of my college roomates grew up in Kula, his mom & dad live there, now he and his family do as well. We haven't stayed in contact over the years, I pray him and his family are safe. He works as a Fireman, I'm sure he is knee deep in it now. Family name is Pocock. He always referred to where he was from as being "upcountry", which I believe is the area being affected by the fires?
