About 18 months ago I was out in JV when there was a legit wind incident, it went white out conditions for an extended period of time, maybe 8-10 hours. There was no way to leave as you could not see 20’ infront of you. I had a 5th wheel that was taking the hit broadside at the time and it was like sleeping in a sail boat in rough seas that night. 😂

Personally I like van camping and short weekends out there, but my girls are pretty fond of the motorhome amenities now so it’s not often I get to roll light. The creature comforts are nice, however there is a detachment from the camping/riding experience that I grew up with and enjoy.
Something about throwing a bag and box in the truck and taking off…👍

Not being able to spectate on the actual course thus tied to the monitors in Hammer Town is a polite no thank you.
Listen to Dylan, If the wind blows heavy cover your face. I have been motor-homing on Soggy Dry Lake when a sudden dust storm was so bad you couldn't go outside to save your awning.

I'll watch some on TV.
Agree the early years were epic. I understand why that had to change from a pure numbers and liability standpoint but yeah I'm not that interested in watching on a jumbotron or from a crappy roped off vantage point.

I can't help for the desert races weekend 26/27/28 but for the last weekend Feb 2/3/4, if anyone wants a place to park safe off the lakebed and slightly out of the dust bowl just let me know. I'll be out there with no wife, no kids and no dogs 🕺

Let's plan a meet-up anytime at the bar at the Forty. My neighbor is putting $millions into that place with the plans for a full campground, store, bar etc. and UTV rentals. $100 per night to camp there for KOH is a lot more than lasertown. I'll be eating 3 meals a day there from the Happy Cooker Rig. The menu has been posted

Staying at "The Forty"?

That sucks, we will miss you and the team

I would love to check out your place, the off road compound is the best thread on RDP! Ill be out there somewhere, in this motorhome and this RZR. Ill either have the black Yiro trailer or the Grey trailer behind the moho.

We were there yesterday morning to stake our claim. 120 pieces of rebar and 1500' of caution tape later. They are rolling right a long with Hammertown construction. Going to be a good one.

They make all kinds of orange caps for rebar ends and T posts that are not expensive. I know how tight camps and pathways get if you care. If the wind blows hard enough, that caution tape is gone.

Not saying this below is you at all. You may be part of a big business or club like Rebel or Genright, I dunno.
I’ve seen a lot of those camps sit empty until people show up for only a few days at the end of the event for the main race. You've gotta do what you gotta do I get it.
I hate when people leave the stakes and tape for KOH staff and volunteers to cleanup. Pulling them out sucks and the last thing you want to do when packing up

side note The first weekend weather for the motos looks great.

That’s funny, you’re gonna pull up to that and there will be 10 rigs circled up and enjoying it. It’s pretty much zero fucks given for that kind of stuff out there is what I’ve seen. 🤷‍♂️
We're going back on Tuesday with our rigs... We'll see. We do the same thing every year.

Thanks for the info, guys. I have a propane heater for the van. I might spring for one of those small diesel heaters too. Will definitely have a ton of warm clothes as I tend to over pack anyway. Just me in the van so plenty of room for stuff.

I woke up to almost a foot of snow and 10 degree weather this morning so I think it will be a but nicer down there.

If weather gets too crappy or I'm not liking the event I'll just split early.

I pack an old set of ski gloves and jacket for KOH.
Think cold then add to it.

I suggest the Amazon Diesel heater. I have one, and it works great.

HammerLung is real. Protect yourself, that soil has some nasty shit in it. Every time I get a sore throat, I worry that the Big C is coming for me.

Whats the deal with the soil out there? I cough my ass off for a while after the event. The dust is like soot in the chest

I think it’s really about the 95:5 dust to oxygen ratio at some points on the lakebed that people are sitting in for hours/days. It’s more concentrated than you would ever get short of using your face as a mud flap behind a paddle tire.
We are slightly higher elevation and almost always upwind or parallel to the crosswind so if I can’t see hammertown, I don’t go to hammertown.

I stay about 3 miles away from hammertown in clean air and if there is a cloud of dirt over the lake bed I will not enter that area unless absolutely mandatory. We moved off the lakebed about 5 years ago. I’ve had respiratory issues after exposure to the dust in the past, actually was getting quite ill one year with a flu and had to leave the event, once I got out of the dust I felt 50% better but still went home and died for a week.

That dust is bad shit, I don’t know if there is bad shit in it, or it’s just the exposure of such high concentration of dirt/air ratio. I just stay out of it as much as possible, vast amounts of desert to spectate good racing from, not sure why people just drive around between hammer town, chocolate, and back door for a week straight😂 other than the military base, the whole desert is open as long as your 150’ off the race course. I would advise everyone to download the 2024 king of hammers map from cartotracks and have it installed on your phone prior to heading out to the desert. It will work off GPS once it’s installed on your phone and is a very powerful navigational aid. Get out and explore the desert, go prepared, fowl weather gear, food, first aide, comms etc….

I've no scientific proof, nor do I want to research it, but I have spent more time out there than the average bear. It's pretty hard not to be sick following KOH if you spend time on the lake bed.

Dry lake beds have a tendency to collect all kinds of shit by nature. Toss in some military use, a whole bunch of people dumping god knows what, and 80K of your closest friends, and you get Hammer Lung, KOH Cough, or whatever flavor or brand is popular.

It made me sick every year: bronchitis-type symptoms plus a nagging sore throat. Last time I stayed at Whiteworks, and that seemed to help.

Two things I will share to turn the thread positive.
One; Early Morning can be a rare gift. Few people are up with the sun, at KOH. I'm one of them who makes it a point to take advantage of the sunrise. I don't know what it is, but the sunrise in Hammertown is cool. You'll never know who you will run into at the coffee shack, walking a dog, or just enjoying the sunrise. It might be the one time of day, you can have a meaningful conversation with a legend.

Two; I used to love getting up on a hill above Hammertown at night and watching the lights. That is best shared with a friend. Two of those friends I sat with on a hill are gone now; I think of them often.

Don't drink and drive, practice situational awareness, make sure you watch the crazy show one night on CT or BD, and trade stories around the campfire.

Have fun.

This video is during KOH, there are 50k+ people there exactly when this video was shot. They go left, we go right, it’s fun to get in the mix here and there, but it’s way more fun to do shit like this with your pals. This is what we refer to advanced levels of fuckery, sunrises and sunsets are always important events.

There are some very cool events within the event that happen these days, I’m not gonna talk about them on the internet, but anyone that is a cool head and wants to hook up out there with us is welcome to make the effort and come play ball. I’ve spent years herding cats and baby sitting adult children out there, if I seem jaded sometimes it’s because I am LOL

Edit: apparently the internet won’t let me post the video of the good shit, here’s a photos instead 😂

We had the ground water tested which is at 100ft and it only came back with slightly high fluoride levels that can be eliminated with a filter.

A lot of that desert area has "Caliche" which is a layer-like of calcium carbonate a few feet below the surface. (10,000 year old fish bones that sink over time like gold) That's not toxic at all, like antacid.

I looked for the 2024 KOH map bundle on the link, don't see one published yet. 2023 is there. Am I missing it?

I have made it out periodically over the years. My 2010 sticker is still on my tool chest. The dust can be gnarly. A burning man level mask is advised. LOL More than just a bandana. The cold is no joke. Firewood goes fast. Baby rattle snakes popping up out of the ground next to me at Backdoor was a fun memory too.

Camp up wind from the mayhem if you can. I hope to see some of you RDP friends there.

The HP Helicopters team will be posted up with us again waiting to rescue Speed UTV cars.😆. Aside from that, they will be racing their luxury Raptor prerunner in the gravel kings shootout and their new spec trophy truck.

I’m good with running some air traffic at my place if you guys want to stop for ice cream or bbq. The heliport is available, we can also do bush planes on my driveway and bigger stuff on the airstrip, but I will need some hold harmless agreements signed.😉

Got the Turbo S loaded yesterday. Stuffed firewood where we could.
I will put more in the truck. Looking forward to this, we've been wanting to do it for a long time.
Still not sure what we are doing/where we are going after, we shall see where the wind blows us.

I think I was asleep by then.
Ran pit for class 16 (Rob Bob Stewart) in the desert challenge last year and was exhausted by the end. Also had to go find body part that got knocked off the class 11 during the land rush start.

KOH is easier as a spectator vs running pits.

Went up and did some chores today, dropped off some wood and put a quick coat of poly on the drinking tables. The gates are open and king of motos fires off tomorrow. We made our way to the gate and got all our credentials in order. After that a quick trip to “the forty” to grab a pizza and a beer. Next stop was into hammertown which is still in the development phase, main structures are up, but the infill and vendors are not in place yet.

I did not see it on the calendar this year.
Last year the number of entries was low.

The kids race on the short track got more entries.

Cindy says that Pizza looks pretty good. I suspect my low carb program is going to suffer a bit on this trip.
Oh well. I been good for a couple years.
Between the pizza truck and taco booth inside Hammertown, its not easy to return at the same lbs as you left

Are there food vendors there besides pizza and tacos and if so, are they ridiculously expensive? I'll be bringing some food but trying to figure out how much to bring.

Is there going to be an RDP inmate meet up?

I have a portable solar panel that I want to hook up to a battery in the van to power my 12V cooler fridge. I usually just place it on the ground in the sun. Do I have to worry about someone stealing it? If so I'll try to stick it on the roof of the van.
