I tend to think of it like weight divisions in MMA.

At Legends, the UTVs looked as fast as the U4 cars until the race started on lap three. Once they opened up the big cars, they were apparent quicker and not just louder. Sometimes, a smaller, lighter car will have an advantage on a tight technical course. All that said, I've been waiting for a UTV to overtake the whole field of U4 cars and land on the podium. IMHO, it's inevitable. I've always believed most U4 cars are too heavy and seem to follow the conventional build design.

So, in my opinion, the UTVs are getting faster at a quicker rate than the U4 cars and, at some point, will overtake them. I'm not up to date on rules, but my kid tells me that they are already developing regulations to hold back UTVs in U4, which, in my opinion, is outside the spirit of Ultra4 and its unlimited nature.

It will be a bummer when people can no longer build a car in their garage and have a fighting chance at a decent finish, but I think we are already there. One of the coolest cars I saw last year was Travis Zollinger's full custom Polaris-powered U4 car. He told me he was blocked from running the whole U4 series due to a new minimum weight requirement, which I think is complete BS. Hopefully, that will change.

Last note: weight has a tendency to really affect the UTVs. U4 cars don't care much if you add spares, fuel, and co-drivers, but you feel that in a UTV. During qualifying, the UTVs are stripped and have only enough fuel to run the lap. (If they are smart) :)
You called it !! Golf Cart on the podium.....

Edit : Well I jumped the gun on the podium . Looks like penalties got him .

Well..
We have left Johnson Valley. Looked at the weather at home and what is coming in JV and ran down to Quartzite. We will watch the weather towards home and explore this area for a few days.
I really want to thank Whiteworks. Cindy and I had the best time and Dylan showed us around, introduced us to his friends and made us feel like family. Thanks Dylan. For everything.
KOH is an event every off roader and off road race enthusisast needs to experience. I do not have the words to properly describe it.
I am sorry the RDP meet up didn't happen..we need to work on that for next year. I stopped at Deckin Arounds compound 3 times and missed him every time..dammit. did meet riverrat429 fer about 30 seconds lol
If ya know what to see where to ride down here in Quartzsite post up.

Spent some time out there last Saturday and Sunday. I've only been a couple years and for only a weekend at a time but damn have I fallen in love with the event.

Honestly, the best part is just posting up and watching shit drive by.

Oh yeah, race today was fkn crazy. Really thought Currie was going to win it and then right as I thought the Fun Haver looked like it was havin' too much fun considering their lead, the transmission blew up.. then the broken can-am took the lead and limped it home and ended up second(?)... wild wild final lap

Kyle Chaney is a badass in that CanAm but missed a trail and virtual checkpoints so he racked up 52 minutes of penalty time officially. Still top 10 and showed what a utv can do. He missed one of those same trails in the race he won yesterday so maybe the penalty is worth skipping it. That’s the game.

Car 100 came through main on pace with leaders, by race mile 85 was in top 20 and letting it all hang out, then drove the fucking wheels off the car. Fortunately there is better stronger stuff available now, this is what happens when you show up with outdated equipment 😉

Impressive run, he was on the clock and then BNAG 😂 I’m proud of Jeff, he’s a lot more driver than I anticipated.

I watched it last night.
He is a driver, D. I see some upgrades coming for #100.
While up in Turkey Claw where you can see the racers attack the course it is clear who the better drivers are...it seems a strange way to describe it but the really sharp guys have a certain finesse about the way the move through the course. Going as quickly as possible over / through / around boulders the size of trucks and trying to keep the machine in one piece is a skill set not easily learned.
I saw one driver take the frustration out on their car and promptly snap a drive axle or break the 3rd member.. We could hear it let go from 200 ft away.

The race was great to watch especially the final lap. It was crazy that everyone had so many issues right at the end

Bummer penalties got Kyle Cheney. I'm glad USAC is stepping up the game in this regard. It is about time. I think the VCPs contributed to making the race better and more entertaining. I watched three days of racing and loved it. Yesterday was about as good as it gets. I think DC found the sweet spot in mileage. That spot he got a red card for seemed easy to miss. It was a new trail and obstacle. Kyle said on social media that he simply was not prepared for the unlimited race, and he accepted that he missed that spot. It was not well marked, but you had to drive it. There were a couple of easy ways around it.

Look out for more UTVs in 2025; They are coming. The haters seem to be ramping up the lobbying to ban them from 4400, but they have been doing this for a couple of years. There are a couple of rules I don't agree with in 4400, as the vision was that it was Unlimited. Minimum tire size, and they have flirted with minimum weight. Perhaps they will adjust them to keep UTVs out, but I think that is short-sighted.

Kyle Cheney is a beast. I loved seeing a UTV lead the race so close to the end; the leader changes were epic. I need to stay focused, but last week made me really consider jumping back into the game. I've got a few commitments to my wife I need to satisfy before I can even consider relapsing into motorsports.

Last note on penalties. Last year, I was highly critical of the race and the lack of oversight in cheating. So much that I heard I pissed off a few people with my comments. I have had a few excellent phone conversations with a friend at USAC. He assured me that all parties had plans to improve the scoring this year. I'm thrilled to see the scoring improvements and the way they handled it during the race this year. I think it is a giant step in the right direction.

Dave and HK Crew, fantastic job. I loved seeing knowledgeable commentators and Dave on the Live feed. It really improved the coverage.

Pretty impressive run. I didn't catch whether he finished 2nd or 3rd

Ya I was really bummed we couldn’t stay, Jeff. We would’ve had a blast with you guys. After we had lunch we went back but didn’t see you guys. I was bummed. Glad you guys had a great time and sounds like whiteworks was a great host.

Have fun in Quartzsite!

I don’t know how much Can Am pays Chaney but it’s not enough no matter how much it is. Finishing Saturday’s race in a SXS was amazing and doing it in spectacular fashion to boot. I was hoping Currie would win, they all seem like great guys and if I was picking a team to party with it would have to be the Gomez brothers.

This was the best KOH for me in over a decade, I did exactly jack shit, committed to nothing, exerted no energy on shit I don’t care about, it was amazing 😂

It’s gonna take a bit of persuasion to get me involved in any race program in the future, I’ve come to the realization that I just don’t care anymore 🤷‍♂️

That being said I hung out with who I wanted to hang out with when I wanted to hang out with them, took naps when I felt like it, sometimes right in the middle of everything, I just dozed off in a comfortable reclined Jeep seat.

No wife, no kid, no dog, just me. It was amazing, I’m not even sure how long I was out there or when exactly it is right now, just one big blur of happiness as far as I’m concerned.
