I love San Diego 20-30 years ago! It's not the same place, but I don't think anyplace is anymore. The disrupters have made every area a little bit less appealing.

I heard a lot of great things about LOTO, but I hear the meth problems drag it down a lot.

Thought I'd share this article I found that I know many of you will derive gratification from for one reason or another. I'd like to personally thank each and every person who departed for elsewhere, only another 8 million to go to reach a level I'd more appreciate (I know, I know, it's an old man's dream 😁).

For everyone that left, we have received implants from the Bay Area Frisco, Chicago and New York. I miss all the nice people that left the state of California. I had more in common with those great people, but have little in common with the new people with hair buns and man purses. I don't understand their lisp when they speak either. They don't like my big truck and tell me I am killing the dolphins. They scream at me for working on my car, but their dogs crap all over the streets and sidewalks and they leave it there. They are married to a woman, but give blow jobs to the homeless on the street.

Knowing the area where you live, what you're describing ain't happening there, so I'd advise, maybe stop spending so much time in North Park 😁 ;)

Sweet Diego has lost her luster... what a great location many years ago... they blew up North County coastal due to expansion at 805/ 5 Bio Med boom... traffic is nearing LA standards. When I did business there I had about a 4 hour window to take folks to lunch and bail asap before freeways locked up. Sad.... I must say the LaJolla up to Encinitas coastal remains one of countries more beautiful areas .... as long as you dont have to commute for work.
I agree. I grew up in La Jolla and we considered 5-10 cars on the road "rush hour" when I was a kid (70's). Bird Rock was still a tiny little coastal community ghost town as was PB.

Like many others, I read through this thread to see if there is some utopia place to live, that I am unaware of. So far, nothing stands out. Lol

FWIW, here is a place I had never heard of, until I moved to Florida. I mention this place because so many people love it. “The Villages.“ This is in central Florida. It is the largest retirement community in the country. Here it is known as the adult Disneyland. It is humongous. My wife and I have several friends that own 2nd homes in The Villages.

There is a club or group for just about any activity you can think of. Over 2000 different groups. Activities galore. Car shows every weekend. Heck, they even have a golf cart drill team, which looks like fun. The main thing is, there is a lot to do.

Sure, it’s a retirement community, so it will only work for those of retirement age. But it is a great choice. Too many of my family members became shut-ins as they got older. Seldom leaving their houses. Had they moved to The Villages, I am pretty sure things would have been different.

For me, one of the negatives of living where I live, is most of my friends have jobs. They can’t go boating everyday. I spend a lot of time looking for something to do, since lately, I rarely work. If I lived at The Villages, finding something to do, would hardly be a problem. Plus, I would be around people that just as free as I am. That is the main reason why I would be interest in living there, sometime in the future. I like living amongst like minded people.

(I work nowadays whenever I feel like it. Lately I haven’t felt like working. The last couple of months, I’ve worked 2 days a month. I only want to do CruisinTiki tours, when I do work. It’s easy and fun. I’ve completely lost interest in captaining large yachts. It’s more trouble than it’s worth! Lol)

I will probably leave HB at some point. But for now I can't as my kids are in college fairly close. St Marys in norcal and unlv
The most appealing spot would be the Hurricane/St George area. I like it up there. I fly a lot with work so driving 2 hours to get to Vegas to fly won't work for me

Anyone here live in the st George area?

I have a good friend that moved up there maybe 20 years ago now?

I can possibly put you in touch with him if you're interested.

Yep, a few of us do. Happy to answer any questions you have.

It’s about 70-90 mins to Harry Reid Airport depending on where you are in the area.

The regional airport here goes to Salt Lake, Denver, and Phoenix.

I live in Canyon Lake, CA. I moved there when I was 8 with my parents. Growing up there was the best. Fast forward to now, my wife and I have owned two houses in there and we're ready to move out. I'm tired of the party seen, loud golfcarts playing music at 2am that I don't care for, (the golf cart is your main mode of transportation around the community), the "I don’t give a shit attitude" with some of the homeowners, and so on. Man, I must be getting old :D.

Don’t get me wrong, being on a lake is awesome. The community has tons to offer with a lake, skiing, wake boarding, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, 16 parks, and a strong community that comes together for the holidays, (Christmas and Halloween are off the chain). I guess I just fully enjoy going to my Parker house and relaxing. It’s so quiet, it’s unreal. Plus, the river is so quiet during the week.

I'll be retiring in La Paz, Mexico and my USA address will be Parker, AZ. Only 20-25 more years to retirement.

One of my favorite pastimes when I was in high school, was to gain access to Canyon Lake using the names of guys I did not like and run up the speeding infractions—typically obtained from girls dating the snobs that lived inside. I was rarely good enough to date any young ladies that lived inside, but the parties we crashed always had top-shelf booze and drugs. One poor guy must have had the same taste as me in women because he always seemed to be dating identical girls to me, and that gave me nearly uninterrupted access. One such young lady is sitting across the table from me as I type this. Lucky me, his Daddy's money was not as attractive as me. LOL

I was a Fireman at station 7 in Sun City and covered. The Canyon Lake station a lot (I can almost see it in your photo), so my badge got me in the gates after High School. When I was a contractor, we built a lot of houses in that place. It seems like it has always been a party place; my Mom shared a lot of crazy stories about it from the 70's, as she was a Realtor in the area. At one point, she owned five waterfront lots in that place; I wish she had them today.

I always wanted to live in Canyon Lake. It seemed like a really cool place except for the rules against motorcycles.

I live in Huntington Beach downtown ...and I love it. I have great neighbors where we look out for each others houses... a couple of retired cops on the street so things tend to stay quiet. I have a view...no houses across the street so I like that... I like parking my car after work and walking or biking to where we go eat or drink... Someone said earlier they love SD but hate every other place in California... I am definitely not in that camp... I love San Diego and all the beaches in between... but I love the Sierra's and going to visit the mountains.... I love the deserts. We are fortunate to have multiple places HB, Mammoth and Parker....I don't like the politics here but they not much better in places I travel to... they are either changing to blue or already there.... you may have pockets, but I feel like I already live in a good red pocket....just search our city attorney to see how much he pushes back on the stuff Sacramento tries to enforce. I don't know where we will end up... but I love the options we have...

Funny thing was from age 17-20 (late 90's) I was in the volunteer fire department at station 60. I covered 5, 68, 7, and 9 all the time. I latter transferred to 59 where affirmative action made me change carriers.

The parties were definitely off the hook, hot chicks, blow, and good times.

Hooked up many years back with a gal who hung out ski/ wake boarding with all the dudes out there... maybe one of you Canyon Lakers will remember her... Donna from GA.... lil cute blondie. Multiple knee surgeries as I recall from water sports. Not exactly sure her era hunting out on the lake .... always said most dudes were firemen, cops or the like with good ski boats. She loved the lake life....

I bet we know the same people from CDF. Affirmative action knocked my dreams into ash in about 1990.

We have done the resort thing.. couple years ago we took the sxs’s and rented houses in San Felipe for a week and went all over the place..

When I was younger and first dating Stacy we used to hit Ensenada and Rosarito all the time. Just hop in the car and go with the two of us..

At some point we stopped.. couldn’t tell ya why.
We used to drive down to Rosarito and stay at the Rosarito Beach Hotel all the time. I always preferred it to Ensenada and it was a shorter drive from SD.

I moved out of the Central Valley (Stockton/Manteca area) about 10 yrs ago to Carson City NV. Born and raised in the CV, so this was a culture shock for me. It took us a while to like it here because of kids, grandkids and good friends, the closeness to many lakes and the Delta. We go back often because we still have our house in Manteca that our daughter rents, and every time we go go back we say "so glad we left". We don't say we LOVE it here in NV, but 100 times better than where we were. Moving here did give two of our sons big opportunity.

As we get closer to retirement, I can not say where I would like to go. No matter where you go, there is something shitty about it, weather, costs, other people. Maybe become a snowbird? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I really like my area. It is a small seaside town with lots of shops and restaurants. Being on the ocean and Japanese food being my favorite is a major plus. We even have a few Michelin star Japanese restaurants nearby. The minus being by the seaside is real estate is very expensive and it attracts retiree's. So lots of old people on the road.

Speaking of where you live, this yacht is still anchored in San Diego harbor. This was a shot this morning on local news. Wonder who the owner is?

I hat all the Cali BS but love HB. Pretty conservative and chill
I’ve lived in 13 nice towns in CA. Most were conservative. Now every single one of the is represented by a Dem in Congress. So glad to be out of CA.

Before it became known as Canyon Lake, I used to fish Railroad Canyon Lake and hunt the area for dove, quail and rabbits. We ate everything we caught or shot. Recall when Quail Valley was once a prestigious private club. By the 80s it had become a tweaker’s Mecca. Can’t even imagine what it might be today?

My wife went and played bingo with her friends at the local church this summer. She came home and as she walked through the door she said "I bought an estate next to Crater Lake". My first question was, how much money did you win? Two dollars was the reply. With the realization that she was going to keep the two dollars to herself and spend my money on a house she had never seen because it sounded neat. So now I have a winter home in Eastern Oregon. I think this is going to be a great home. It's been many years since we've had snowmobiles so it's time to play in the cold again. More then likely we'll lose it to a forest fire but, that's life. Until then friends and family will all enjoy it with us. Going to be 14* tonight with a high of 30* tomorrow. Should snow all next week.

I have a fishing trip booked for May on the Willamson River. Rated the best in the US for rainbow trout. Going to try a fly rod for the day. Plan on using the well accepted method of letting out line and dragging it behind the boat.

I grew up in that area. We lived between Chiloquin and Agency Lake. We went up to Ft. Klamath to fish a lot and spent many days in Crater Lake NP. We had deeded river access to the Williamson. My dad pulled 3-5" Rainbows out of that river every time he went, which was about 2-3 times a week in the Spring/Summer. Those were some great days as a kid when we used to run wild through the forest and swim the rivers. My best friend's dad was the ranger at Collier State Park, where Spring Creek joins with the Williamson. Great fishing in that area also.

People not from the area have no idea how different the two sides of Washington and Oregon are, to me the east side of both is God's country.

Yes. Even people from Oregon! We meet some people here in the RV park sometimes, from the West side, and when I tell them where I grew up, they always mention the rain. Nope! Not on our side. I'm just shocked that they think the whole state is like that when they live there. We got 10" of precipitation a year . . . . all in the form of snow. 😄

It's like when you say you're from Reno, people assume it's the same as Vegas. Totally different environment.

The other drawback to living here is the high today was only 44F and it will get down to 31F tonight. At least it was sunny. Have a good dog park nearby that I go to everyday or the beach. Would be nice if it was a little warmer in fall/winter.

We are having a lot of fun here and the people are great. Run down the hill to Rocky Point Lodge and have dinner when it's open. It's right out of the movie The Great Outdoors. I had some questions about traffic during the eclipse. The Sheriff met me for a cup of coffee in Chiloquin. Who does that these days. I think we are going to like it here.

It's alright... Lake in the backyard, 10 bar/restaurants on the water, wildlife, kind people, no crime (someone stole a bunch of mail earlier this year is the crime of the century)...

It does get cold, and I am not getting along with the leaves. I blew the driveway off yesterday, and this is what it looked like this afternoon!

How do you like the leaves? 😁

Wow….. 99% of Oregonians don’t know what/where Chiloquin is! In the early/mid 2000s I was an apprentice and we did 3 summers working on projects in CLNP. We stayed in Fort Klamath during those stints. GREAT fishing down there! I still go down there 6-7 times a year in the spring to shoot squirrels (squeaks).

People not from the area have no idea how different the two sides of Washington and Oregon are, to me the east side of both is God's country.
Yep, I've heard that all my life. Living in Prineville & Redmond (central Oregon). Just heard it the other day while in Kauai...."Oh you're used to all the rain". I'm thinking, sure, it rained at home like twice last year !

View attachment 1305277

I feel the same way about CL, I have been here +18 or so years, I still love it and couldnt imagine living anywhere else in the general area...but with all the houses being built around the lake, the influx of new people, the idea that no laws apply to inside the gates, the wakeboard boats destroying the water on the weekends....its starting to get old

I had to look that lake up on google maps. It's jam packed with houses. Looks like most of the lake is a no wake zone.
