I've hated living here in Huntington for a good 20 years. If its not the apartments on one side of us making racket, it's the white trash family and their six dogs on the other side of us making it miserable.

Great Thread post... Im in.... Yes I do but first a bit of background... [Party Disclaimer Notice]

I have residential & commercial property in SoCal/ VA & DE

I moved to rosarito MX 9/5/23.... 'Full Time".... just exploring Baja mostly....thought a reboot was in order.... gotta say its early yet but thus far yes I love where I now live. More to come for sure.....

** My lawyer in SoCal has access to $50K should I need rescue 😁😁 I may be stupid but no fool.

I have always wanted to move to that area, but what would I do for work was always my issue....

I love where I live, Canyon Lake, but I hate California or at least big city California, there are some pockets of small town I wouldnt hate as much....in fact thats how I ended up in Canyon Lake almost 20 years ago...it had a lake, a wall around it, a small town feel, and no traffic or track homes in sight...but its slowly starting to change year over year...

I love where I’m at in San Clemente and I’ve gotten accustomed to the negatives. The last thing I want to do is move and deal with the new negatives of the new locale. Everywhere has its negatives and if you’re looking for nirvana, good luck.

3rd generation California kid, was a great place to grow up and we moved 5 miles south of Sacramento in an area that is surrounded by the Sacramento River on 3 sides. There was a small family marina 5 minute walk from the front door. Had a small cabin cruiser that we used almost daily. Unfortunately, there was a push to shut all the little guys out, so we lost our marina. Very quiet neighborhood with few issues. My concern is the same as many, crime and taxes. Can afford the tax bill and don’t see a personal affect from the crime, just hate to see a great area turn to shit.

Have lived in NorCal my whole life. Growing up was good here. Like many others though, I'm ready to go. Havasu definitely has my interest but no decisions made as of yet.

I like the area im in. Mission veijo, grew up in Huntington. bought our condo in april of 2019, and I hate it now. i like my neighbors for the most part, but they are too close, no driveway, single car garage, no yard for the kids and small. we sacrificed a lot to get it, and i would burn it to the ground now if i could. we could get about double what we payed for it, but then where we go? cant afford to buy what we want in CA, out of state not an option for the time being. so i just grit my teeth and take it. my wife knows how i feel, and finally quit asking me about redoing the kitchen or stairs. i told her the only way i will redo them is if we are leaving and im getting paid to do so.

similiar to @Hammer i get pissed off and can feel myself becoming tense when ever i think about.

I moved to Prescott 5 years ago this week, after dealing with DC for 35 years. I haven’t been anywhere since I moved here, wife absolutely loves it and doesn’t care right now to travel. We visited here for 20 plus years, never thought my dream would come true. I’m glad I moved here when I did!😎

If I could move out of state I would... I'm tired of CA and the assholes here. Hate driving anywhere, I feel that I'm always on edge and pissed when i get to my destination.
I also feel that people in CA have become more stupid.

Spent the day yesterday in Sacramento visiting customers buildings all the way to Gilroy. The amount of traffic during the day was nuts and was tired as hell when I flew out at 8:30pm from San Jose.

Texas is great, but no Havasu or mountains. That's literally the only downside.

Good thing is there's direct flights from San Antonio to Bullhead for $80-150 roundtrip all day long in the summer. Figure that's gonna be the plan, keeping the boat there. I go to Mohave more than Havasu anyway, and Needles storage is relatively cheap. And maybe get a beater boat out here? Lakes are low out here so not missing much the next few years.

For mountains, in Socal I had to fly somewhere or drive 6+ hours to get legit snow, so not a big loss either. Big bear and Arrowhead don't do much for a guy like me who likes deep powder and double diamond runs. I did hit every powder day locally though and called off work, that part was fun but only a few times a year.

I grew up in the South Bay. West of PCH. And loved being at the beach every day.
Life was good with dad paying the bills and mom keeping the housework and meals.
We went camping and fishing and boating and snow skiing. A great life for a kid.

When I got older and needed to go to work, things got different.
It took a half hour just to get to the freeway. And once there, it hardly moved.
Long work hours and the expense of maintaining a place to live, left no time for enjoyment.

So I set out to work 35 years in the Aerospace workplace and retire at 55.
Lots of things happened along the way, Kids, scouts, off-roading, boating, sailing. Etc.
But after 35 years I retired.

Now on the agenda was finding a place to live for the next segment of my life.
Having worked in El Segundo, Palmdale, Edwards AFB, Seattle, and San Antonio,
I knew what I didn’t want or couldn’t afford, so the wife and I took off on a roadtrip to find the next place.
From San Antonio we headed West to Tucson and stayed at a friends house for a few days.
The next few days took us to Phoenix, Wickenburg, Prescott, Sedona, oak creek, and Flagstaff.
From there we hit Utah, Kanab, Springdale, La Verkin, Toquerville, Hurricane, and St George.
Next was Nevada, With Vegas we checked the entire perimeter of the city, Lake Las Vegas, and Henderson.

We figured that was good enough to get an idea where to land our butts.
Heading back to San Antonio, we stopped again outside Tucson and found a very nice area.
The town has virtually no crime, no gas station hobos, no off-ramp beggars, no corner sign guys.
If you want to hear bout the racial makeup, 95% of the people look like we do.
We’re not in a city, so the taxes are low. we have no HOA. There is a Walmart and 3 grocery stores within 10 minutes.

the downside, we’re all over 55. No young girls washing cars in the parking lot.
Nobody drives over 35. restaurant and pubs are empty by 8pm.
We moved our surviving parents (moms) to a senior care facility just down the road and visit almost daily.
We have about 50 friends that we get together with several times a week. anywhere from 10 to 30 show up regularly.
We take trips together to Cancun, Cabo, Punta Cana, and other destinations. We all sold our RVs and now stay in nice hotels whenever we hit the road.
Everything is paid for, so the only bills are utilities.
I can get used to this.

We moved from down town in 2019 to south HB. I have to say other than groups of dickhead kids on E-bikes, it's a completely different world. Big yards/lots, original owners and young kids playing in the street... reminds me of the neighborhood I grew up in. After 20 years downtown, I was ready to exit HB as well... now we rarely ever see Main street or the beach north of Newland. I feel once our boys get through high school we'll be looking to move but for now we found a nice quiet pocket of HB and Dos Amigos is walking distance!

This place has definitely changed for the worse especially living on Lake 6 blocks of from all the bs but it wasn’t nearly as bad when we bought here in 95. I drive through normal neighborhoods with a culdesac and wonder how pleasant my life would have been. At this point I’ve just given up and have accepted I’ll be miserable for the foreseeable future.

definitely love where we live in relation to our house, our neighborhood and our neighbors. But the state (CA) overall has declined for the last 20 years or so, the city followed suit about 10 years ago. In our little pocket, we love it........step outside of that, and we're in the shit show / rat race

If I want to hit the mtns we’ll that’s 2.5 hours I can be in flagstaff or east of payson.

I've been thinking to find a second place that complements Austin, and the FL Keys (most different, best boating) does that better than anywhere else. But probably not better than everywhere else.

Because no matter how much I might love the Keys, it can offer only the one experience.

Maybe trailering a boat and Airbnbing it for a week or two several times a year makes more sense? I'd wanted to avoid the trailering hassle, but it's really the only way to experience all the other places I'd like to see (LOTO, Havasu, the Delta, etc.).

Luckily, Austin's pretty centrally located.

Anyone choose one option over the other? Or tried travelling around first before settling down?

It's alright... Lake in the backyard, 10 bar/restaurants on the water, wildlife, kind people, no crime (someone stole a bunch of mail earlier this year is the crime of the century)...

Don’t hate it, don’t love it. Born and raised in So. Cal. Spent all but two of my 56 years there. I haven’t found a better place for weather, entertainment or just things to do in general. It’s been a tough 5-6 years for the state. Homeless, crime and weather taxes are out of control. Gotta hope at some point the voters wake up and take it back.

I live in Murrieta. I have the house, shop, and property I’ve always wanted. Now I want more property, a bigger shop, and a smaller house 😂 Neither my wife or I could have the caliber of jobs and the money we make here. We looked at moving out before we built our house 4.5 years ago, but it didn’t pencil out. We plan to retire out though. My only concern is healthcare. I don’t expect an easy go if it in retirement due to my current and former careers. I really want the rural life (because I have a version if it now) but access to healthcare is my concern.
Yea, due to my wife's cancer & like you mention, the need for access to good healthcare, right now I think we have the best here in San Diego but that may change due to insurance companies leaving Commiefornia & if that happens, we'll be out too.

I love San Diego but like mentioned by others in this thread it is getting too crowded & just going out to eat, the beach or shopping is a cluster fuck.

A fair concern.

We received some great advice from a retired friend during our 3-year tour. He was pretty firm in making sure healthcare was at the top of the list of must-haves. He lives in Moab and said it was a significant concern he had: broken bones, no problem in Moab, Cancer, no specialists in that town.

BTW, yes, love where I live, both places. The last two mornings have been epic after that rain we had; the desert smells so lovely.

-Grew up in SoCal and spent a lot of time at Havasu.
-Spent some time in my late teens/early 20s in Daytona Beach.
-Lived in Parker for a short stint after that.
-Back to SoCal for a bit except in Canyon Lake instead of OC.
-Now in Austin, have been here 9 years. I'm 34

Only thing I miss on that list is Havasu but I've traveled back a couple times. All in All, Austin was able to give me almost everything I loved about Havasu but was able to afford me a much better lifestyle at the time. I believe that still to be so although the gap may have closed up a bit over this last decade. I've done a good amount of traveling to new/different places too which probably is not something I would have found myself doing if I was still back there in my comfort zone. I still have a bucket list of lakes I want to experience.

Yea, I'm not a fan of mosquitos & swarms of bugs which would keep us from moving to a few places where we have family. We love the idea but after visiting & not being able to hang outside, we're like nope.

Born and raised in SoCal. Finally made the 100% full-time jump to Arizona last year. Completely love living in Lake Havasu. Just can’t live there full full-time. We takeoff and go to Montana still go to Huntington beach here and there. And a few other places.

Bottom line being out of Southern California, is the best feeling ever. Never knew how trained we were in the rat race.

It took being gone a year to see how everyone in SoCal is running in a hamster cage. And doesn’t even know it. It’s normal.

Sure the weather is awesome. But the amount of people ,traffic and of the amount of the wrong people is overwhelming!

Salt Lake City. Hate the winter but love every other aspect of it. Another negative is cost of housing for a premium area isn’t much different than SoCal. Currently flying back to SoCal once to twice a month which may not be sustainable once I start a family. Considering moving back to the San Gabriel Valley but feel I may regret it once I do so.

I loved San Diego for 30 years. CA went in a different direction than what I wanted. I really liked our TN place, but the amount of work it takes to keep it how I like it was/is too much. I can still do it, but it makes it less enjoyable, so we are going to sell it at some point. Our place in Sarasota we love. We just have so much fun here. When the TN place sells we will buy a new house here in Sarasota. Then we will spend summers at the new place and the winters at our resort that we enjoy so much.
Like it.... My pops from Tampa and we had a home in Sarasota much of my life for winters. Awesome spot... hope it kept its chill... my time there was 1970-1985

I’m a 4rd generation Angelino and contractor. My Great Grand Father was a plumber in Whittier in the 1920s with a 3 digit license. I loved it here for many years but now can’t wait to get the fk out.

Likely less than 18 months to go..

WOW.... would you be interesting to listen to.... what your region has gone through in past 50 years! I'd just sit and listen to you. I've had priviledge of meeting a few who settled in OC in 1950-60s when mostly farm land. Wild stories. And then there's downtown LA.... I met a dude who used to care for a horse John Wayne actually took up a service elevator to an apartment he kept in one of those older buildings ha. Crazy

Rank-ordered:

1. Warm weather
2. Different geography and/or history (Hill Country, Cowboys & Indians)
3. Music/tech/art scene (SXSW)
4. Boat (Lake Travis)
5. Drive (Twisted Sisters)
6. Off-road (parks only)
7. Shoot

Austin has the best scene and driving, just not different enough to love.

FL Keys? Most different and best boating, but no 3, 5, 6, or 7.

Havasu? Best off-road and shooting (public land), but no 3.

LOTO? Great boating, but no 2 and 3.

Always looking for suggestions.
Lost a SoCal home grown 40 yr old buddy to Austin 2 years ago.... tax strategy .... he bought a sweet home up on stilts on a lake above trees. Seems to enjoy the change of people and more open/ friendly types.... travels a lot when weather gets unbearable but has a dock/ boat and digs it pretty much.

I have always wanted to move to that area, but what would I do for work was always my issue....
Yeah theres no income producing careers here that I see other than realtors.... they are everywhere due to exPat migration of late. Sure hope this region doesn't blow up.... I need some Cartel activity and beheadings to keep folks out. My thinking is that the republicans will win next year and maybe a year or two later US economy will re stabilize so less folks run down here. Fingers crossed.... we Americans tend to fuck existing cultures up.

It's funny it took a year.

We leave OC for 1 week to Havasu and then on the way home the second we get on the 15 FWY in Barstow the drivers are just insane. Flying across lanes , cutting off everyone. You can set the stage every time we say " here they come"

To the OP I love so cal because my family is here.

We are in your neck of the woods this weekend, visiting family in Columbia, MO. Doing a side trip today to Stark Caverns, near the lake. Good trip so far, the locals are always very welcoming.

Live in Melbourne, Florida. Also referred to as a free state. Couldn't be happier. 😍
When it gets below 70 it's cold.
Nice and toasty in the summer months, I like hot.
Airboats seem more popular around here than off roading.
No driving in snow and slush. Been there did that. 😣

Multiple indoor and outdoor shooting ranges available. 🙂

Born and raised in Orange, loved it there, moved to Flagstaff 30 years ago, never loved it here, other than being a good place to raise kids and my wife has a great business. There’s decent single track for dirt bike and mountain bike riding in my backyard, and we are close enough to Havasu that I get to go there every other weekend (that keeps me stoked). Can’t wait to move there full time.

It took a year to realize the people who live here think it’s normal to drive crazy flip each other off not let the other car in in front of you, etc. The lowlife walking down the street is normal as well. Nobody’s looking everybody’s in their phone got earbuds in. They’re all in their own little world trying to intermingle.

We’ve always known it was fucked up and bad. Just not sure how bad until you leave. And so much worse now the just 5 years ago.

How will it be 5 years from now ? 😳

It was a great ATM machine for many for a long time. Fantastic weather and a great place to raise a family. That’s all gone.

Now the foreigners and people that could care less about America or the state are overwhelming the place. Along with a brainwashed society and totally corrupt fucked government.
That’s the problem.

We really like Temecula and what’s around us. I hear about the traffic but do to the job I have now rarely get stuck in it. Only thing we don’t have that we both want in Temecula is a single story house with RV parking.

But if I had it my way I’d move back to Yucaipa tomorrow.

Don’t really see us permanently leaving California but definitely see us buying a vacation house somewhere eventually.
