@Taboma , was trying to figure out how I got pulled into this one. My view of this is pretty simple. There are lots of places others have been that I have not, here on earth. Man has wanted to reach for the stars since the beginning. During the time the quest for the moon was happening, my grandfather was working for either Aerojet or Rocketdyne. My brother has the picture that was on the mantle, grandpa in a suit with Von Braun.

I may doubt a lot of what the government says, but I don't ever doubt mankind's dedication to things. The problem we have is science is always supported if it can help control. Everything they learned then, was sadly put into missiles. Seeing what private groups do now is also awe-inspiring.

I think if you were to look a we bit harder, you'd find many beneficial things we take for granted today, were born from the harsh and unique requirements of the 60's race for space. I mean besides giving Tang a boost in sales thanks to it's trip to the moon.

Oh no, it's a given. The propulsion advancements were the "stars", but communications, computing, insulation and manufacturing were just some of the many things that were driven to new levels in that time. With most technological advancements currently, it seems that funding for research is always a bit easier to come by if the advancements can help a military investor.

Did you know, on the internet, it is impossible to prove who you are to everyone. Someone is going to call you a liar. Same with the Apollo missions. It's the way it works. I had dinner with Neil Armstrong many years ago. The passion in his voice as he told stories of the mission, he was the first man to walk on the moon. He also talked about the first time someone ask, did you really? He understood why. It still made him agree from day one because it was him, the actual person. I also had dinner with Jim Lovell from Apollo 13. It was pure dedication of mission control that they made it back alive. That night went past midnight and I swear it felt like 10 minutes. They were out in space and had an explosion. Not like you could get out and take a look. It was all guess work with a few instruments. Both were charity dinners and we got to ask questions and visit. Nothing was preplanned, just a sit down. Both men make you proud to be an American.

Armstrong got the deserved publicity, but I think America's greatest astronaut is Jim Lovell. That's not just because of Apollo 13. He was on more pioneering flights than any of his contemporaries, and his leadership in space travel is unmatched IMO.

I agree. Jim talked for 4hrs that night and there were 10 of us asking questions. He knew every square inch of that flight and what it did. He kept the crew together and the feed back to mission control. He told the story and had a copy of the flight recording when they had to make a burn for a coarse correction as they approached earth. Remember they were in space, in zero gravity trying stay aligned as the ship tried to tumble. No sleep and under that pressure. The true meaning of live or die. Later in life at a trap meet I met a man who's claim to fame was he polished the main engine valve seat on the lunar module. They had to make 10 valves that would fire on/off 10 times each without a failure before they could make the one that went to space. He made a lot of valves before he could do it as close to perfect as possible. The rest is history. We as people in America came together and made this happen. Best of all we had real men that said, hold my beer and you did and kept it cold out of respect.

The part you not so deftly slipped from the context, is in regards to the Trajectory SIMULATION used to conduct the Wind Compensation Calculations.
It's an assumption used as a BASIS OF COMPARISON --- if it were an actual launch calculation, then the Earth's rotational influence would be INCLUDED as applicable in the Wind Compensation Calculations and the Rockets UNGUIDED steering fins adjusted accordingly.

The photo is not a mirage as you suggest. People have gotten on a boats and filmed it all the way across never lossing sight of it. We have all seen mirages's driving accros the desert. They disappear are you get closer they dont get larger. There are other photos of objects 200+ miles away.

and here I thought Earth was 4x the size of the moon....


they need to replace all history of Earth and state it 100 x the size of the moon.

Here's a pic I took of the sun setting behind Santa Barbara island. (Catalina Island is to the left)
I took the pic from up on the bluff (approx. 50 feet ) at Dog Beach in Huntington Beach.
The island from where I took the pic. is almost exactly 60 miles away.
I've been to Santa Barbara island at least a couple dozen times . . . I can tell you there's plenty more island below the horizon.

I'll look for a pic. I took from the same spot of San Clemente Island . . .(more to the south).
A much bigger island, (and much taller) and almost the exact same distance away.
I've been to San Clemente island at least 50 times . . . and again, I can promise you there is much more island below the horizon.

And if you STILL don't believe me . . . well pick a day, a clear day . . . we can leave Huntington Harbor at sunrise and you tell me how much of the island you can see along the way. At it's peak, it's roughly 2000 in elevation . . . we'll stop for a pee/ coffee break 1/2 way at the east end of catalina . . . if you wish to continue, it's only another 30 miles . . . oh yeah . . . bring advil, it's a small skiff.
