When the developers (farmers) sought to build the damn, SLO county agreed to permit construction/operation (and to take land by eminent domain) on the condition that a first-class recreational facility (among many other conditions) be provided. Those conditions are in perpetuity. If the farmers did not want to, or were unable to meet that condition (or any other condition), they shouldn't have built the dam.

Hmmmm...

Wast there any stipulations on the hours of said operation?

It's pretty bad azz a least a couple months outa the year...

See flyin_laveys post. He get it. 👍

The issue is that they have permission to run a certain amount of flow to run off, they run it at 30x the allotted amount with no checks or limits constantly through out the year, draining it dry.

The amount allotted would keep it around 60% to full year round, not draining it almost completely yearly.

Here we go again!

Fill we up!

First pic was this morning. Second pic just now.

It was way lower last week before this storm came through but I didn’t get pics.

Just amazing how fast it fills.

Wet winter we’re gonna have a good summer up There!

My wife showed me a picture from Heritage ramp from yesterday that showed the water was past the ramp there now. Should be able to reopen it pretty soon.

Yes it is. And it's been that way, WAY before you guys started paying attention to it! 😂

Pro Tip:. It will be this way forever. So like I said...

I get bit excited when it starts to fill up and (hopefully, though has a ways to go) starts dumping over the spillway. Means it’s gonna be a great summer up there and there will be trips. And of course it NEVER ceases to amaze me the quickness in which naci fills. I’ve been boating up there for 25 years. Still like to see it fill when there’s rain 😁👍

When I was doing homework on that lake, I read the mountains about it, recieve more rain than Anywhere else in the state.

That's why the farmers built the dam in the first place. They got tired of being flooded out year after year!

Hence the reason it fills up so fast. 👍🏼

I went there once when I was a kid. Fishing sucked, so my dad never went back again. 😝

He must not of known how to fish. A SR5 or SR7 trolling or casting is the go to lure. I remember 1 trip the people next camp over Saud there was no fish. Told them you clean them we'll catch them. They spent 2 hours cleaning our catch. We had a annual fishing tournament Monday to Thursday before Memorial day weekend. Had to get there Sunday weekend before to get the best water front spots. My insurance agent still fishes there numerous trips a year. Leaves his boat up there just for fishing.

We always did pretty well at most lakes.

Maybe they stock the place now?

Farm grown fish are Fucking disgusting. The meat is like a bowl of mush!!! 🤮

Hard to imagine catching an edible fish in a lake that empties out every year.

Google seems to agree. Enjoy your catch. 🤮🤮

Lake Nacimiento is best known as the only lake in California that is stocked with white bass. Anglers will also find largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, carp, bluegill, and channel catfish. There is no limit on white bass, but DFG regulations state that, "at Lake Nacimiento (San Luis Obispo County) where any white bass taken must immediately be released into the water or killed by removing the head or cutting through the gills."

The mercury in the lake bed from the runoff of the many old Mercury mines in the area kind of negates eating much of anything caught in the lake for me. But it is well regarded as a fantastic fishing lake.

I can bet that Nacimiento and San Antonio are the only 2 lakes (since they are right next to each other) that you could ever go to that have weather like they do. Where you can be refreshed floating in the water with a cold drink in hand during the day, and in a sweatshirt at night and around a fire.

After growing up at the river...I'm not sure how I'd do with that. Boats and sweatshirts don't mix for me...needs to be hot

It's plenty hot in the day. But cools off nice at night. I actually slept in a tent once there in middle of summer. Only had to run the air a few times. I prefer the cool nights as I am getting old. On way to Parker now to enjoy the cool nights.

White bass are good eating but like mentioned 1 meal a trip cause of mercury. When they boil its not hard to catch 20 plus in a short period of time. We mainly caught and released as nobody wanted to clean them. I could catch 20 a day st the river if you catch 2 a day average your lucky.

Interesting that Naci doesn’t have striped bass, yet nearby San Antonio does? Surprised they been able to keep them out of Naci. Naci and San Antonio are often plagued by lack of water. Yet, nearby Whale Rock, just above Morro Bay, doesn’t seem to have the same trouble with lack of water?

Any easily accessible CA lake has been fished out for decades. You pretty much get what they stock anymore, and stocked fish are pretty gross.

Maybe that's why they have raised the price of a fishing license to the moon? To keep the rif-raff out?

I absolutely refuse to pay those prices. I haven't bought a license in decades. 👎

A 30 pack of your choice when you go to Naci. Show me a powerboatable lake that is 100+ during the day and can get down into the low 60's to upper 50's that same night.

Not quite. on average in July (the largest daily change) Arrowhead has a 26 degree swing (fairly common outside of the desert lakes) whereas Naci has an average July swing of 41 degrees.

Flying Lavey lived in Heritage for a while. I can vouch for the hundred degree days and 60 degree nights. It's same weather here at Echo now as summertime in Naci. One day I will have a Naci house as well. Love the Central coast. My realtor just got back from Paso today. Said it was great weather for wine tasting.

Boating at Naci in the morning and Tasting on the Golf coarse that afternoon. Flying Lavey is correct. Been running Naci and San Antonio since 1973.

I love boating Naci. I hate the fact that the boat carpet doesn’t dry out at night lol.

Coming from the river you’re used to just airing everything out and having a dry boat in the morning.

At Naci if you had a full day of water sports odds are the carpet will be moist in the morning.

I chuckle whenever I hear people talk about going to Paso wine tasting. My uncle was a cop at Paso PD in the early 90’s. He had 20 acres of land out off the 46. Paso was a straight shit hole. Dive bars filled with field workers and cowboys. Nothing to do. No other type of entertainment for kids or teens. No tourists since there was nothing to do. The wine biz hadn’t hit there yet. It was a blip of a city only known for the mid state fair.

Crazy how much it has grown. There was nothing on the east side of the 101. East of Paso. Nothing! Now it’s quiet the bustling city with it being a wine tasting destination. Some would say it’s growth is a good thing… some would not

Soon close but nope..... first, 91 isn't 100+ so the water isn't nearly as refreshing, and second, the extremes you have listed there are still less than a swing from the AVERAGE July Highs and lows. And the figures I'm using are courtesy of NOAA via Google. And following that data, the largest swing in Parker on average occurs in October and is 30 degrees.

I'll give you that for the fishing. And clarity of the water.

And I'll still be happy to buy you that 30 pack when you come to Naci.

Side note.... I'm REALLY looking forward to going there this summer and boating on it again. It's been too long.

91 does not make that water refreshing. Nowhere near hot enough..... and 41 degree swing is a LOT different than. A 32 degree swing.

Plus, Parker is still closed and Naci is opening back up. Lol!

You should read what you wrote (what I quoted) again.

I'll be waiting for my beers while you try and figure it out. 😁

Oh I did. Nothing about jumping into the cold water of Parker when it's only 91 outside (the hottest day in October, not even the average) is refreshing.

I've been to Parker in the fall several times.... the weather then is still nowhere near like Naci.

Wearing shorts drinking beers with my Echo people now. It's colder at Naci in August some nights in comparison. Miss my Naci crew but my river crew is like Family now.

I have live in Paso since 83. What a different it is now. All we add back in 83 was the rodeo bar and the Muddy Springs bar. I used to go to Naci at least 50 times a year back them. Those were some fun days. The narrows was crazy back them. I have to admit the wine industries make the town a lot nicer. Nothing stays the same forever, I guess.

Yep! I'd go up to Paso as a kid in the late 80's as we had family that owned a place about 15 miles east of the 101 off of the 46. Then spend a lot of time up there with my uncle through the 90's driving old tractors and riding quads all over the place. Place was seriously a ghost town for the most part. Wine industry blew it up. And yeah, the Narrows used to get straight up Havasu Sand Bar / Copper Canyon status crazy. You get in past the bend, you weren't getting out until sunset! For some reason in the early 2000's Las Tablas became the party bay. Guess people got tired of the long no wake zone to the party spot in the narrows after they pushed the no wake way out.

Like I said, I always chuckle about people going to paso like it's all bougey and shit. LOL Guess it is now but I remember its roots - Farming town. You'd say you're heading to Paso in the 80s and 90's and people would be like, "Where? What's that?" 😆

Worked in Paso from 87-2000. That place blew up in a big way. I don't remember one vineyard in 87...only one I remember was in Templeton. Pretty much watched the wineries go in one after the other. The Narrows were crazy fun back then. I was living in Nipomo and Shell beach back then. I'd work all day Friday in Paso, drive all the way home and load up, then tug my little 70 Sanger Flat with a 76 army ambulance back to Nacimiento. Oh to be young...good times.

Living in Morro Bay in the very early 70s, believe there was no local LE, they had to come in from SLO. Happy Jacks and the Harbor Hut were about the only bars in town. Pretty much a Wild West sort of town made up of hard working fishermen, cowboys and atomic power plant builders. There were a few who had rugs made out of exotic game skins laying in front of their fire places. Seems those animals had been "acquired" while hunting in the hills above San Simeon. AKA, Poaching on the Hearst Ranch ! And, as previously mentioned, Paso was a bunch of nothing.

Well since the lake is usually empty by August, I picked July 1st as a date one could reasonably expect to Maybe still be boating up there. These numbers look strangely familiar! 😁

Lived here for most of my life (since 59' , Grew up in San Luis Obispo and since 75' lived in Atascadero (With a Cabin at Naciemento ) and boated/Hunted most of the entire area , Paso is flat frikken Hot and dry in the 90's pretty much all summer BUT it (and Naci) do cool off in the early evenings due to the proximity to the coast and the valleys leading out that way almost always , San Luis is a very moderate climate "Mediterranean" so to speak but expensive and very "college town" , Atascadero , Santa Margarita and San Miguel weather is much like Paso . all these areas are very nice , very little crime , no gangs , clean ... Morro Bay/Los Osos is flat depressing and over crowded to me (foggy alot) But a cute tourist town and good source for fresh sea food , Housing density in SLO , Morro , Baywood is crazy , Atascadero has very large parcels , I bought "horse property" here years ago , the west side where I live theres very few homes on less than a half acre and average are 5 to 10 acres and zoned to where subdividing is unlikley ... Anyone really curious just call or DM , We have a large reach and customers bring us boats and Jets from all over the western states , People always remark about what a great place this is , Best kept secret LOL
