I fitted the port tank over the weekend. I got a bit greedy on the tank size when I measured them. The fiberglass tanks had a slight draft to them. :grumble:

I should have made them 1/2 shorter. Sigh.

Forgot about the flange to mount the tank sender, so I made that Saturday and welded it in Sunday.

Starboard tank fitment is going better since I have an idea what to do, but it still takes time. Berth is all cleaned up and ready.

Getting a driveshaft made, hopefully that will be ready this week.

Still need to change all the fluids, plugs, caps, neovane. See about some type of Bimini, get a spare tire. Batteries......Running out of time for Desert Storm.

I drained the oil and got 4 quarts (max) of very old oil(out of a 12-14 quart pan :yikes). That worries me, terribly.

Brian

Sure it's not a 5 qt pan??? :D

I was told that even though you have an oversized oil pan, you don't fill to capacity. I was told is was to be sure the oil pickup was always wet and the oil could slosh around, but stay off the crank?

You got this!

That was my Saturday... I was stressing out. I decided to have Dustin do the bearings on the trailer and the tires put on next Saturday, then gotta run it by and have one of my bunks welded since it broke on Saturday, and still try and detail the boat... Okay stressing again FML... That doesn't include the oil change in the truck and having it detailed

12-14 qt? Holy shit, that thing must be huge! I thought 10 qt pans were plenty big.....

It isn't a 14 quart because it doesn't have the kickouts, but it is a huge pan. Draining the motor I was prepared with several containers at the ready and it didn't even fill up the first one. :yikes

My kids have been VERY interested in anything to do with the boat. They are so excited.

The oldest was watching the oil drain, (kids right?) and when it stops she said, "Is that all daddy?"

There is some truth to that, however were pretty far below that threshold.

I would not sweat it too much, if it does not have a knock atm, it survived...they only have 5 qts in them normally in a vehicle, afaik the larger marine pans just give more volume to work with to keep it cooler, since in a boat they work much harder.:thumbsup

Yes sir, I agree. I kept telling myself, everything else runs on 5-6 quarts. However, there wasn't 5 quarts in it and it hasn't been changed in some time.

What do you think of that DuramaxYFZ?

The driveshaft was out too. That is not comforting.

I know jack all about v-drives, is it possible they get pre-season maintenance such as replacing drive shaft u-joints yearly? Maybe he had a buzz in the drive he was looking at?

He could have been treating it like doing the impeller once a year, never want one to go out on the water?

Fun fun, new toys, new problems to find!

Nothing a shakedown run won't find :D

Honestly Brian..between you and I and the other 5000 readers of this thread...Our brother CC was not good on maintenance...at all. lol

He really had no where comfortable to do it...and found it to be a distraction. The Spectra was sure to provide Carl with a lifetime of pain after I've torn it apart. Its like an archaeological dig...I found all this dark molasses looking crap in the intake and on the valves..and the machine shop refused to put the parts in the hot tank for fear of contamination...well I figured out that the previous owner of the boat had glass tanks and let the resin get into the engine until it probably ran like crap...then decided to put aluminum tanks in it. They are brand new. Motor oil was dark...really dark.

The good news is...if Carl had hurt the motor in the Howard...I would have known...it will run.

Well, it is what it is, keep doing what you are, plow through it :D

Soon enough you'll be out enjoying her on a lovely summer day, it will all be worth it :thumbsup

Brian,

When you get around to your old school surge brakes, here is a 21 dollar lockout switch that is activated by your back up lights on the flat or round pin connector. Depending upon the master cylinder on your trailer coupler, you may need the adapter.

Easily installed by a guy with your skills and a brake line flaring tool.

Gas tanks in. Oil in the vdrive looked good, but slightly low, so some good news there finally. I still have a big list of shit to complete before I try the key. Anyone interested in a dunk at puddlestone this weekend? Any new goofy rules to launch there?

With what you have going on I'd haul it down to Elisinore. Unless they have changed up since last year they are by far the most "project friendly" boat related lake I've been to. Don't even remember having an inspection there........ever.:thumbsup

How about the mussel sticker or anything like that?
Not sure. The kid just stands on the sidewalk, asks to see the safety gear and asks when/where you used the boat last. I have the sticker on the boat so maybe that's why I've never been asked specifically.

I second Elsinore, easiest lake in California to get on, if your ready Thursday possibly Friday and if we both have time I'll drag down with my rig, I make multiple trips out there weekly checking on my boat anyway.
Puddle stone so small, you'll start it, ( assuming it starts ) idle out turn the wheel left and leave it, you'll never even know if it can turn right, lol
No other option I suppose it's better than a hose on the side of your house :D

First place I tested mine, all registration must be up to date and visible on boat, they ask to see life vests, fire extinguisher and I brought a flag and my first aid kit just to be sure. They are younger kids that follow strictly by the book compared to a while back is what people from a boat shop told me. I showed up last week just to test my new prop and it was a "jet ski" day is what the chick told me, any odd calendar day is "pwc" and every even day is a boat day. But if you just want to drop it in the water on a pwc day they will let you but you can only stay in the slow zone which has a max speed of 12 miles an hour. Hope this helps[emoji1303]

... I hate to throw a potential negative variable into this but if when you start it at home and it runs weird look in the carb for black shit which would be residue from the fiberglass fuel tanks... I'm sure you've heard this it gets in the valve stem's ports anywhere the fuel can go doesn't do any damage but it's got to be cleaned out...

Wherever you end up going, I think I'm free this weekend, just let me know.

My buddy took his Vector to the puddle last weekend for some fresh motor break in time with no issues. No mussel sticker required. Made a few "warm" laps. It's close and easy:thumbup:

I cut out perfectly good fiberglass tanks. :)

I was thinking that yesterday...tons and tons of late nights trying to get this done in a week only to be broken hearted by an engine issue.... And have fingers crossed

If anything is hurt in the motor or velvet drive, it is what it is. Just have to bring it to the shop and take the motor out and keep going.

Besides, it's a Chevy, everyone always talks about how they are so much better than Mopars, it better run. :)

I've got a fresh 520HP 440 Mopar sitting in the garage for my jet bote that will.
