Absolutely the move if you want a divorce. Abandon CA, divorce somewhere friendlier to men, and then go back.
Unfortunately his chick literally went nuts after the purchase of the TX house and VERY early on after he moved. I’m not sure how it works, but all of his court hearings are actually in CA so he was going back and forth for a while before he ditched TX for CA again. Maybe it’s because they were married in CA?

That’s funny. When we moved to Atl Steph went to Bunco night with the neighborhood ladies. They spent a chunk of the night telling her about the differences in divorce in GA vs CA. Her first question when she got home was asking if i moved her there to divorce her. 😂

What part of the country doesn’t appreciate a lowered dually? I would think that’s universally badass

I honestly think you would be laughed at if you had one of those trucks up here. I don't recall seeing a single one. Of course, there are a lot less people, so it's difficult to tell if it's just less people, or cultural.

Lol I didn’t know what bunco was till a few months ago. I’m super happy my wife has a group of friends that gets together and does stuff like that. I guess we are at that age now.

Out here, there are a small handful of lowered dualies and burbs. I know just about all the owners. 2 Mexicans, a black guy and a few white guys. All very clean trucks, all used as tow rigs. All these guys live "in town". In my area, the potholes on the "paved" road will hurt the trucks, and a lot of dirt roads. That said, the dualies that are lifted are divided by race, which is in turn marked by sidewall profile...it's funny AF 🤣

I figured moving away from family was going to be a little tough. Everyone from both sides was in So Cal. Tough was an understatement. I was working 12hrs+ a day in a brutal office environment. Her making friends and playing Bunco once a week definitely made it livable.

Damn, guy starts a feel good thread and it gets crapped on...........
I don't think it got crapped on. Just a couple of respectable sidebars. Sorry if you're offended by that. I'm personally super excited for the OP and have stated so since he first announced his plan a few months ago. My grandmother used to tell me that everyone should have at least three great adventures in their lives. I've always been a fan of adventures and always support those who participate in them. Being scared and nervous, wondering and praying you're doing the right thing is all part of it. Best case scenario, you end up with fabulous memories and a more fulfilled life. Worst case scenario, you learn a valuable lesson. Either way, you come out ahead :)

… Might be 2 steps to the gauche side for me… But if it was a freebie, I would take it🤷🏽‍♀️… now where would I find 21 Jack Mormon wives… they would each have to have their own bedroom, of course…

… maybe I missed some thing, but is the bus that has been referred to in the thread,…is that a motorhome or an actual bus???…

… oops… I just went back and looked at a couple of posts about people crapping on this thread… So maybe I should not have made my smart ass comment about the mansion🤷🏽‍♀️

You could buy that just to invite people over and tell them to go be poor somewhere else.

Look at the 2011 assessment. Peaked in 2008 for 414k and I wonder if someone actually bought it for $129k or so in 2011. Talk about a cheap castle even when it tanked.

I would be in at those two prices… I have been to Kansas… When I lived in Oklahoma… I think I could tolerate it… Keeping it dust free might be another issue though🤷🏽‍♀️

This is what the boss said we are going to have to do. We've got an apartment we rent out now above the garages that we would use as a place to return if need be and rent the front house out. This will alleviate the property gains tax as well.

That is what we did. Rented the house out for 2 years to make sure we were doing the right thing for us.

When moving IMO first thing after getting a little settled, start chatting up the neighbors. Maybe a quick BBQ nothing fancy. Snacks, salad, soda, cooler of beer. Hot Dogs maybe chili, pilled pork is easy. salads. Just a kinda howdy.

Not enough garage! You could build a pretty nice Barndominium for that coin.😎

Just talked with a Realtor friend who has clients that want back into California. It appears that, for some, the grass isn't always greener elsewhere.

So we are on the verge of leaving California too...I am a realtor and for the last 5 years I was a listing agent on a huge team which did mostly conservative marketing on TV and radio. For that time period, most of my clients...about 40-50 a year, were leaving CA to go to AZ, TX, Tenn, FL, NC, and a couple others. Only one said it was a bad move, but he went to Ohio. However, I am worried about the move because we moved to Redding, CA about 10 years ago and it was an issue or an absolute nightmare! We literally turned around and came back to San Diego, but it cost a bunch of money and put a hurt on my business. I have created a ton of stress with my wife lately because I don't want to do this again and she is not the research type. My son and I have already toured Texas and we love it, but we could probably live anywhere.

Some mentioned lowered dually's in other states, I have to laugh because my dad tried moving us back to Fort Worth in 1986 when I was a kid. My brother had a lower crew cab dually and he was tormented in Texas for that. We turned around then and came back to California then too, but for other reasons.

My new plan is to move the family to Texas and I stay in CA and just rent a room in Temecula near my office and make a slower transition flying back and forth before I shut down business in California. At this point, I just don't know what the answer is, but California is not it. I am not looking forward to starting all over and finding a job or trying to build a business when it's fact we are heading into a recession.

Congrats to the thread author, sounds like a well thought out plan. But for many others, what’s the rush to leave? The simple fact is many people are going to maximize their earning power in CA, even after taxes. Also it is tough to leave family and friends.

Rather, maybe think about staying until it’s time to retire then cash out and make the move. If you are in good health, you will have many, many years in retirement to enjoy a new chapter outside of CA, without giving up your earnings potential.

If you can afford it, maybe consider buying/keeping a small condo in CA to go back and visit family and friends after you leave. The older we get, especially when kids are out of school, it’s that much harder to make new friends.

Just a thought. Here’s where we landed.

I believe the original poster still h a s young children. This alone can play a big part in choices and timing. Maximizing profits and gains isn't always strictly monetary. Time spent in Cali may grow your investment portfolio, but may cost you in other ways. It's the same as other's thoughts on investments. There are different schools of thought, and what works for one, may not work for another.

Sometimes you just have to make a move, and see what happens. No risk, no reward.

Yes getting out before my kids grow old and make lifetime friends and have commitments to teams etc. my daughter has one GOOD friend and that was rough but they’ve been face timing and she’s been keeping in touch and showing her friend all the new stuff and school etc.

Seems some folks are sad to leave California. I get it. Beautiful State

There is the chance it could turn around and become normal again, slim but a chance.

One can always return to their homeland.

How much of your business needs to be done in person? Could you fly back and forth twice a week?

We have thought about this. Fly to ca early Tuesday morning and head to office then fly back home Thursday night. In the end it takes a toll on the family the longer this is done.
Bingo.
I did Carlsbad to LAX Monday morning to Thursday evening. Burned myself and my family out quickly.
I would drive back to Carlsbad for any special events, but when that occurred, I was not back in my hotel room until midnight. I did negotiate a flat rate with Hilton. $100 bucks a night, and I paid for 8 weeks (Monday - Wednesday) when we made the agreement. Had the same hotel room and would leave everything in my office @ DTV.

I also did Carlsbad to Vegas for a few months on a contract to hire position. That was worse, since I could not get home quickly for any events. The Vegas company offered me the full time gig, but wife and I decided we were not moving to Vegas so I turned it down.

You have to be without kids or willing to miss events to do that type of commuting.

The rush to leave is because your hard earned money is NOT going in YOUR pocket!

And I'm not really sure how to calculate it, but I don't feel like the equity increase off sets the massive expense, to live in CA anymore.

I'm over the "weather tax".

The OP did the right thing. 👍🏼

You would be AMAZED at how many people are doing this! LOTS of LEO/FIRE/MED are doing this!
I have a friend that works for OCFA and he has coworkers that do this. Another friend is a captain at the SDSO. I just talked to him the other night and he said they are going to open up opportunities for people to live out of state and work for the department. They will let them adjust their shifts, so they work more days in a row and then have more days off in a row. They are hurting for qualified people right now. When I started as an LEO 30 years ago there is no way you could have done that.

100%.

Wife and I have a great relationship, not going to put something like this between us. We will figure it out and move the business, and our selves eventually.

That was the reason my wife and I transferred to blythe, we work a 48/96. We go to work for 2 days and have 4 off. If we trade shifts with other crews we can work days then have 8 off

Yeah, earthquake season sux. Oh wait, that’s not a thing.
I remember being a kid and our parents having to make an earthquake kid for the school to hang on too...

I loved getting them back at the end of the year, nothing like free beef jerky and a couple of unopened hot wheels my parents stashed in that kit for me

Anyone who's not a troll (and those that know you personally) can make the determination, based on the endeavors you share...that you can make it anywhere....find someplace that works for you. You'll do great wherever you go, I have no doubt. Can't say that about a lot of people. Enjoy it. Congrats.

Being a motorhead, I have a question for @ka0tyk ...is the turbo still on the dually, and is it "legal"(ish) there?
