Phoenix peeps. Who remembers Wallace and Ladmo Show? Classic stuff there. Lots of thinly veiled adult humor for a kids show.
comic books with ads for cool shit like x ray glasses
when a new 4 wheel drive pickup could be had for less than 10K
the old plank road through the sand dunes between Yuma and El Centro before people burned it for firewood
Driving into Phoenix from Blythe on 2 lanes

Wallace and ladmo !

Classic

OP made a fortune in the day off those shorts. Some at OP used to laugh at Speed-O's. Guess who owns the remnants of OP now. OP actually had a boat building division, owned by Jim Jenks the primary owner & founder of OP. They were upscale sportfishing yachts called Innovators. I was VP of the company. Outstanding superior quality boats, just the wrong time. We debuted on the East Coast at the Miami Boat show. Hatteras and Bertram were blown away, and extremely helpful.

Fur Coats abounded in Russ Meyer's soft porn movies. And the chicks who wore them were super hot.

Flow and Eddie on KROQ.

And the band they were the founding members of.

The Turtles < highlight for answer ;)

We're talking the "Turtles" Joe. I saw them in Laughlin about 4 years ago and they kicked ass. I got to meet them and bought a CD that they both signed.

How about....

Having to drive through down down Indio and eating at the blue diner (name?)

Getting gas at the TEXACO in desert center with working clean bathrooms....Come on there has to be some of you.

Stopping at Rice for a coke, gas, or a fan belt. It's more than just a shoe fence to me. I remember no AC and 115* you had to stop.

Vidal when the inspection deal used to be a shack that was never open.

Motorcycle riding in the big sand hills adjacent the 10 in Whitewater.

How about getting caught by the train in Indio that took forever and the A&W there, if we were good at the river Mom and Dad would stop there on the way home! Boy the good ole days! Desert center was the start drinking stop for Dads and they drank all the way to the river! LOL:D

Was anybody else there?

I made all 3 days....at least thats what I remember... ;);)

Me and a buddy flew down from Anchorage. I was 22 YO.
3 days of CA debauchery, had a hotel in Ontario, and a personal shuttle to the front gate each morning.
We were in a group of 12 that won the trip on a radio station in Anchorage.
It was sensory overload for us trailer park Alaska albinos. We had never seen such women and mayhem!!

Real slot car tracks at the bowling alley. Remember the Revell 1:32 scale kits. If you short wound the motor you could get more speed out of it.:thumbsup

That makes me smile just thinking about it.:D

The one below is HO. 1:32 was much bigger.

Sears in Compton had a slot car track down stairs, Mom used to let watch while she shopped! WOW!

Chris & Pitts in Downey is actually on Lakewood Blvd. (aka Rosemead Blvd) just south of the 5 (Santa Ana fwy) before you get to Florence. NW corner of Gallatin Rd and Lakewood Blvd. Still outstanding. One of the very first McDonalds (#3 I think) is at the SW corner of Florence Ave and Lakewood Blvd, about 1 mile from Chris & Pitts.

December 25th 1963, I am 5 years old and come around the corner to see a brand new gold Schwinn StingRay bicycle, with white banana seat and streamers from the "butterfly" handlebars
(still have it...need parts to restore)
Dad taping blocks to the pedals so I could reach them.
The first time he let go, and I knew it.

Saving my, "taking out the trash" money for two weeks and buying a "Made in England by Lesney",. Matchbox car, in the box, for 50 cents.
(still have them)
Losing interest in Matchboxes, and Hotwheels were 99 cents.
(still have them)
Getting my "Monkey Division" machine gun for my birthday.
T., G., &Y.
Brownies Toy Store and the mean woman that hated kids that worked in there.
Whirlybirds.
Some new show called "Batman", and a lady in a real tight suit that looked really cool for some reason..:D
Stuffing the Sunday Paper with ads before delivering them, sitting in front of the drop at the liquor store in the dark, laughing at the "big kids" who were 14 and too cool when they were taking about girls. Then slinging them heavy bags on my handlebars to go deliver.
"Porching" the paper for nice people, or older folks.
Trying to collect from the jerks.

My first suit from Dunns Mens Store.

Riding in the '49 Merc with 3 on the tree. Mom hunting for cheap gas in the "Gas Wars"
Parks Texaco.
Dads Craig 8-Track in the Toronado. Changing tracks in the middle of songs.
Cigarette machines in the lobby of restaurants.

I am 13, have a new job catering parties, etc.
Slightly plowed, very well endowed lady gives me full view of the rack, puts my hand on left boob and says, "bless your heart" out back when we are loading up to leave. :D
"The Dry Look", by Gillette.

Switching from Chuck Taylors to Converse All-Stars.
Then, "Wallabies".
Wearing out the backs of the bottoms of my Levi's big bells, and my Dad getting pissed because they, "looked like shit".
Gabriel Hi-Jackers.
Fender Flares to cover the L-60 Mickey Thompson Indy Profiles on 15x8 U.S. Mags.
Finally old enough to drive my own ride to cruise Whittier.

Day one. September, 1976. Senior year, first period.
Late, I'd worked until 2 at a catering job.
Walked in, looked around, very cute blond and vacant seat next to her. In lust, in love. Married 33 years this coming May.

Barricades on Whittier Blvd. Cops shutting down the cruise.

The CB craze, 23 channels.

Trash Trucks- you could put as much trash out as possible and 2 guys would follow the truck down the street and dump your cans and whatever else into the front loader bin. Those days are long gone, now your limited to number of cans and the trash man get mad if they have to get out of the truck to get to your can.

On the road up to San Gabriel Canyon, but still in the flats...there was a trout fishing farm...as kids after we'd been up in the canyon sitting in the back of the '53 Chevy under a tarp while Dad hunted deer....we'd sometimes get to stop and "catch" a fish at that place.
As I remember, they were huge Rainbows..and it seems we used dog food for bait...

Corriganville in Simi Valley

Grandfather had a telephone in his Cad. very early on. It was actually a marine radio. To place a phone call you had to call "KOU Marine Operator".

Father had 2 lumber yards in Watts. We could see the flames in the sky during the Watts riots from our home in Downey. Can't even imagine how that must have been for my Dad. Not a stick of lumber was touched (or torched) during those riots of 1965. His neighboring "armed" business men protected his yards. These were friends of his, who happened to be black, from his high school days at LA Jordin High, in Watts.

all those old tv shows reminded me of when we got our first color tv.

The Beatles on Ed Sullivan (b/w)
Cuban Missle Crisis
Push-button transmission in our 57 Desoto- I used to sit in the drivers seat and punch the buttons, pretending I was driving.

I recall getting home at 4am, my dad up making coffee, and then getting up by 7 to go to work.
Dad wasn't happy.

Being the baby of 9, now 8 since I lost a brother, we had typical station wagons, like the weird green with formica imitation wood grain siding Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, I'd sit in the very back facing cars with my back to the driver. Always good times until I discovered car sickness, fuck!!
