They are trying to prep a second DC-10 to go back into service. Two of them were put into storage for the "off season".

Your roof shingles will be fine. Check your roof vents to see if any embers can get into the roof cavity. If so get some wet towels and put them in front of the opening. Also if you have wooden fences that attach or are close to your home, wet them down. The fences usually catch on fire and go from one house to the next.

I'll be praying for you!

Why hasn’t someone developed a self contained fireproof foam spray that a guy could wheel out of garage ,spray the house down , go in have 6 beers while fire passes then take your drunk ass outside and hose it off ???? We are a somewhat smart country full of resources. Even if it was 5-10k i would think many would purchase. 2-3 years to rebuild is all the motivation I would need to buy one. Im thinking some thing that looked like the airport fire extinguishers, big wheels big tank.
When our vacation house, near Greenwater/Crystal Mountain, was in a stage 2 fire warning area, I called our insurance company (Safeco) and signed up to have it sprayed with fire retardant. They were going to spray it when it hit stage 3, and they would have cleaned it up and repaired any damage caused by the retardant. Fortunately, the fire was stopped before it got to stage 3 in our area.

I know they can’t spray every house when the fires are so widespread and moving so fast, but I’m somewhat surprised I haven’t heard of some effort to do this.

Also, I like your idea. Let’s partner up. 😉

This.

Also, palm trees burn a little below the live branches where the remainder of the dead fronds are. If you still have bottom portions of dead fronds, those really burn.

Check if you have gaps up under the eves for embers as well.

Boys in the air looked to have made quick work on Shin's fire. 👍

Need to get it done, winds are picking up this evening they say.

How is this possible?
Those were the fires from fall of 2024. notice the smoke blowing to the East. All the smoke of these is blowing west/south west. At least one of those was known to not be arson, the Airport fire which was started by a county Crew. I don't recall if they figured out the cause of the Bridge or Line Fires.

Im not discrediting or ignoring that MANY of the fires started in the past couple days are likely to be arson.

I know this isn't a complete fix but it might help..............back in the 70's we had fire breaks and fuel breaks. They were helpful in slowing down a fire and also creating a safezone and starting point for crews to attack from................tree huggers stopped that

Has the fire jumped to the north side of the 101?
I don't think so. Maybe a new 1. I took the 405 to 101 to Westlake village last night. It was pretty close to 101 as I left Westlake. But the rest of the stretch I saw nothing. If it fills the gap between palisades and 101 that's a lot more homes gone. And if it fills that and jumps the 101 oh shit that will be insane.

I keep reading about people complaining about brush/forest management, or lack thereof. Celebrities bitching about these hillsides not being "cleaned up" of detritus. I understand the concept, but in reality does it have any positive effect in these kind of conditions? At some point, regardless of how much or how little fuel there is, you just cannot win when the winds do not allow you to get ahead of the thing, right? If you go in and scrub the hills of brush, ignoring the feasibility and cost of doing so, it just creates other issues like erosion and mudslides, no? Is there a middle road that is reasonable?

The biggest thing noticed watching the news was the palm trees. It seems getting rid of palm trees could have a huge positive effect on minimizing the spread of future fires in urban settings.

The key is to keep the fires small and not get a well established head of fire. Cal Fire contracts with larger agencies to keep fires at 20 acres or less. Difficult when resources are stretched thin. When air assets are working say on the palisades fire and they hear a new fire start, they’ll divert a majority of aircraft to new start to keep it small so ground crews can try and wrap the fire with hose. Only way aircraft don’t divert is if fire they’re on has no divert due to life safety.

A good friend of mine who I worked with for 10 years just lost his house in PP yesterday. In 2018 his folks lost their house in Malibu. After the 2018 thing, he went out and started putting together a volunteer "brigade", became one of 100 or so people in the country with fire mitigation certs after tons of training.

Supposedly they were doing a fine job defending his neighborhood yesterday until the hydrants ran out of water.

He's still out there (with his own fire truck and crew) working the fire.

I talk to him about once a week and he's a believer in the mitigation strategy, although I'm not sure anyone ever anticipated winds like they saw a few days ago.

My wife told me she thinks the stuff we had was tossed in the trash (it was about 15 years old. After the 07 fires here). I will look in my sheds later to see if I still have it, not sure now. It came in boxes about the size of a milk crate. I can't remember the name of the stuff but it was applied with a hose and supposedly cleanup was not easy.

Edit. It was similar to the stuff in this story. Not sure if the same brand but applied the same. https://www.thermo-gel.com/image/cache/2013_Firefighter_Equipment_Guide_without_Pricing.pdf

Thermo-gel is the stuff we use to use. We had a whole fleet of type 6 patrols that were part of a gel task force. There’s a ton of required maintenance with the gel and equipment and the federal gov doesn’t recognize the gel task force so they dont reimburse on federal fires. Couple that with homeowners complaining about the damage the gel did and the slip hazard it created. It worked when properly applied and reapplied. The best defense is updated construction and defensible space.

Fuck palm trees. I’ve seen more buildings and property lost or damaged because of palm trees. The ember cast off of one is terrible. This was a few weeks ago and almost took out a house and motel. Damaged but we managed to not burn them down. Homeless btw.

My brother set a palm tree on fire once. It was full roman candle mode, you probably could have seen if for over a mile. Someone called the fire dept on him. Either they put it out or it burned itself out I don't recall.

When our dad got home (we were in high school) I didn't say anything. When my dad finally noticed it I just told him to go ask my brother.

I would never have palm trees anywhere near my property.
