I’m shopping for a new washer and dryer. Wondering if someone has a large capacity set that they love. I have the LG top loader set I bought a while back but I always have to run the dryer 2 cycles for it to get to the correct temp and now my washer has some rust stains in it. Hoping there’s something better these days….large capacity is a must.

None are built well anymore :(
We have the front load large capacity GE’s, we purchased 15 years ago. Dryer is always 2 cycles for us due to the size of load. If the load is medium size and not heavy items (jeans, sweatshirts, etc), one cycle works.

What's crazy is my 30 year old world pool dryer, electric, I never have to run twice, even if I'm doing blankets and bedding.

I do know that modern appliances have to meet energy and water consumption ratings from the EPA in their "normal" modes, but not in optional modes. This is especially true for dishwashers, I wonder if the same thing is causing issues with modern dryers? Try running in super mode maybe?

I just know my neighbor had a top loader LG with wi-fi. First one delivered and set up, installer put it on a test cycle, and it never stopped filling, and flooded his laundry room. Home Depot exchanged it 2 weeks later (with no compensation for the damage) and the new one would activate with wi-fi with not even being set up. Would not stop. 3 months later, the plastic perimeter holding the glass see thru lid broke. That was his final straw. Home Depot washed their hands of the issue, LG said parts were unavailable. He disputed the charge on his credit card, and threw the washer into the trash. He went to Lowes, got a Whirlpool, and has never been happier.

I myself have a Samsung front load that took 3 months to order due to Covid, but so far, so good.

Caveat emptor.

If you can purchase something from Sam's or Costco you will not have any issues returning them. I know Sams offers a really good warranty through Allstate that you can purchase and it covers factory and incidental damages you've caused.

Hello Stacy;

It depends on what you are looking for. If simple and reliable are your priority, Speed Queen makes a residential model. They are supposed to last forever. Like your kids inherit them. That said, if you are looking for pretty colors, lots of features, those kinds of things, then the normal LG, samsung, etc.

I do not recall where your laundry is in the house but if it has a long dryer vent run, make sure its clean. My dryer has a long run and when it gets built up with stuff it definitely makes the dryer not work as well. Just throwing that out there.

It’s in their pantry which is basically the center of the house.

And if it's vertical install a booster to the vent

Old 90 series kenmore. Those are the shit.

Huge capacity, take a beating, get cloths clean, last for ever. Sure, you may spend $25-50 on them once every 5 years but they just go and go and go and go.

Our Maytag washer was crap, motherboard was shot after a year or so, replaced it with a Samsung top loader. It’s ok. We still have Maytag dryer, always needs 2 dry cycles even after having the vent cleaned out which is located in the center of our condo. We have to clean the outside screen on the vent, weekly.

we have a newer Maytag top loader. large capacity, no isssues. We also have the Maytag dryer. We use the "Automatic" dryer mode where it senses the dampness. works great, rarely have to add time.

Supply shortages indicate what’s available.
We have maytags, both 19 years old. Dryer vents directly to outside wall, and works great.

I did this 6 years ago I ended up going with Speed Queen. Plain Jane very few buttons and water fills up on the washer so the clothes actually get washed.

If your dryer is taking 2 cycles to dry a load, check to make sure your vent pipe is clear and there’s no lint built up in there. Don’t forget to check the hose between the dryer and the wall vent connection. If it’s clean maybe don’t do such a big load. We’ve got a pair of LG front loaders that are going on 16 years. You have to remember with a front load washer you have to keep the door open to allow it to air out or it will smell mildewy.

We had Whirlpool front load set for a long time. They kinda sucked. The washer always smelled and the dryer caught on fire.
We went to Costco and bought a LG set and so far, so good. The washer is a top loader and it is huge.

How set are you on a matched set?
There's tons of opinions on the best washer (I think quality front loaders are best).
Dryers aren't rocket science and 'vanilla' models aren't that expensive - get the biggest capacity, white machine with a simple timer and temp sensor you can find.

All parts are now made in China, so even if they’re ‘Assembled in the USA’ they still aren’t going to last more than 5 years tops. We have a set of 30 year old washer/dryer that just keeps churning without fail at our SoCal place. In our Havasu House we just purchased the largest capacity / lowest price set we could find at Lowes. We know we’re going to have to replace them 4 or 5 years from now so why spend the extra cash? It’s not going to extend the life of these items. They’re designed to fail !!

SPEED QUEEN!!!
Full water fill, last forever. Any tech will tell you that Speed Queen is best. We tried a new brand. Low water, small agitator, tore up the clothes. Threw it away and bought SQ. Wife loves it. There is a reason Laundromats have them.

LG Front loaders with direct drive and ball bearing motors. The biggest capacity LG's have all the right features. Theirs a sticker on them stating that.

My wife is very happy with her front loading LGs. They set on those pedestals with drawers. Pedestals are pricy, but convenient. Very year and model specific. Prior mention of cleaning your dryer ducting is valid. We used a guy in LHC who also does chimney sweeping. Believe you guys purchased a previously owned home. If you haven’t had that ducting cleaned out, no telling if or when it was done last. Good performance and safety maintenance.

Speed Queen will be our next purchase. As of now we have have these Kenmore that I bought used when I was like 22yrs old. So i have had them for 20yrs. And i hope they last another 10. The wife, being an LMT does 2-3 loads of sheets and towels everyday and has for 15yrs! But when I comes time we will buy speed queen. I would like to find a couple used coin op speed queen machines. I refuse to buy any of the new fancy stuff. They have one job, clean my clothes, I dont need a fancy touch screen for that shit!

And yes check your vent, hire a sweeper to come clean it. It's like $150

I have rentals so I own eight pairs of washers and dryers plus my house. When I bought the new house in Las Vegas for years ago we picked up our second set of Samsung which I generally don’t go to because refrigerators are the worst.

I have to tell you their abs are the best front load washers and dryers we’ve ever had they’re incredibly smart if you’re not looking for just a basic wash and dry and want good clothes coming out of them properly and not beat up too bad and with very few wrinkles this is the way to go. We have an old set of Samsung and had a washer failure at 10 years I got repaired that was it.

If it’s simple stuff then you GE or Whirlpool top load some of the components have been around for 20 years.

if i ever need to replace my kenmoore units from 2004 it will be with speed queens. the gov is going aftger washing machines with regualtions in the guise of energy and water conservation.. thats why you dont see old school dials on machines anymore.

Those kenmore’s of the 00’s are reliable workhorses. Gave our 2006 models to my dad before we moved to Texas in 2020. They’re still working. I replaced the heating element on the dryer twice, but that’s it. The SQ’s we bought have an annoying lid lock feature, but I noticed they now have a model without that feature. Or just get a commercial unit.

I gave up on high end washer and dryers. Had a $1400 repair one day on the washer. The good news was that it sent me a text telling me it just puked water all over the floor, it was going to need a new drum seal and it was two days out of warranty. We value you as a customer and have a wonderful day.

Now days I buy what's on sale, my repair man is a hand truck to the curb and I buy a new one on sale that will deliver.

Old school top loader washer, front loader dryer. Best to find a rebuilder/reseller.
Ive got a guy two blocks down that does this...lost a washer four years ago...swapped my old one for rebuilt top loader late 80's/early 90's...incredible
how much cleaner our cloths are. If you can find industrial grade old school they are worth repairing especially for a family. The new stuff is just terrible.

Dryers should be very simple. Ad heat along with a lot of airflow. Cut down on air flow and drying times go up. The heating element is being cooled by the air flow. Reduce theair flow and the element runs hotter. The weak point in the element then breaks.

They say more lint passes the screen then is caught by it. With strong airflow that lint is carried away. A long run and that lint collects. I have never heard it discussed but i think in overly long runs the air may cool and allow condensation thus grabbing lint.

Venting is a big part of drying. The longer the run the slower the dry time and the more it gets dirty.

Maximum vent run is usually around 25-30 feet. Each 90° elbow is the equivalent of 5'. Throw 4 elbows and 30' of pipe and you have the equivalent of 50'. Best setup is less than 15' and 1 elbow

If you vent out the roof that usually creates its own issues. Most roof vents are not made for the high flow needed for a dryer. What you need for a roof is the dryer jack roof vent.

Solid pipe only. I used the heavier hvac pipe and elbows rather the the light weight aluminun. Do not use screws. Use foil tape. Pull the washer out and get a set up of solid pipe or use only a couple feet of the heavy duty flex pipe. Stay away from slinky hose.

Do not use those flat what i call periscope vents behind the dryer.

We cleaned and repaired a lot of vents. Some homes required cleaning every 6 months with professional equipment.

We got lint out that you could squeeze water out of. One of the problems with not keeping a clean vent is the moisture accumulates. The pipe gets corroded and is now rough.

A good setup will save you a lot of headaches.

Our 20 year old Wirlpool dryer broke last month, wife had a meltdown. Our local appliance parts store in Murrieta had a replacement belt for $12. It took a butter knife and a 1/4" nutdriver to open it up, replace the belt and clean the vent all the way out. Had dry work clothes by dinner time. I love the old shit.

I lost the Speed Queens in my divorce and the house I bought following has 1986 vintage Maytags in the oh so sweet tan'ish color. These fukr's refuse to die and do a commendable job.

When they do they will be replaced with Speed Queens without question as there is nothing comparable to them today. Especially, for the crowd that gets mud and dirt on their work clothes.

What is that?
Inline air actuated booster fan. When venting is vertical there's a height limit, though I believe your house has a flat roof so overall height might not be the issue but if there are elbows in vent that will decrease the efficiency.

We got the ge front loaders when our 20 year old kenmores died. The dryer is for long runs. Pretty happy so far. We have had them for two years. Still in the we will see if they last mode but they are doing great.
