How about running your "lightweight" flatty with "1500" hp against a "1200" hp, 3000 lb "cruiser" for 1/8th mile or 1/4 mile or 1 mile????:hmm Of course you would have to drive the copy of the imatation to one of 5 Honchos??? :D

Or he can just race the jet boat. :D

You can't be talking to me...:headscratch:

To date, all of your accomplishments can be credited to the driving expertise of SOMEONE ELSE

. I know, you have a 90 mph jetboat and your kids outboard

. What about that mini dcb you got broke off in a couple years in a row then quit like a little girl. I would love to have a drag race that one.

I've got a ton of pictures of your boat from the last couple enduros I was at. Not sure if I ever posted them all for you. I could even send you a cd with them on it if you wanted.

Thanks, pretty cool flame job huh LOL .... I never noticed the reflections until I downloaded the pic, I like it :thumbsup

We get between 4 and 5 months of boatable summer, I just finished it mid Sept last year and got it on the water one time. Just enough to discover the oil leak before the coil died in the middle of the lake, what the heck that's why boats have paddles right :D

With that much steering wheel extension did you have to put a couple of 4X4's on the pedals?

That might have been appropriate on an all wood Mandella....but RD made me up some matching billet pedal extensions! Only took him 2 weeks! :finger

Here some closer shots for you Carl since I know that your vision was the 2nd thing to go. :D

And yes...that is carpet! I don't have pictures of the last time I re-did the interior where I had balsa laminate put in.

A lot of guys insist on a T-deck design so's there legs don't get caught up in the dash in case of a flip......no problemo for HM....just move the pedals back to where you can reach them.....no T-deck needed for Frank!

so it turns out the little schiada I picked up has an FE in it. been trying to identify it, but the only casting numbers on the block are 0L30 3. It has an edelbrock streetmaster 390 intake, but looking up FEs it seems lots of stuff is quite interchangeable?

Been there, read that. And read a bunch of other FE forums/online articles. What is sure is that there is no way to tell what size an FE motor is by the casting numbers/markings. Even the 428 cobrajet...may or may not be marked...and my not be a 428 even if marked. The only casting numbers on mine, mean nothing - couldn't even find a cross reference on that page. Looks like these blocks were so universal that they just got assembled into what ever was needed at the time. The only way to figure it out for sure is to measure bore and stroke....and even that doesn't mean it started life that way, although it doesn't matter. Kind of cool reading up on the FE's. :thumbsup

The heads are the most important detail anyway if it's a 390. :thumbsup

13' Thunderbird--Bare hull purchased in 1956, put together by my father and me. Actually sanded, stained and varnished the bare hull.
Originally we installed a stock 59A Ford V-8. V-drive was from C & S (Cummins and Saunders) a machine shop in N. Hollywood, CA. V-drive consisted of two large Gilmer belt pulleys and Gilmer belt. Very quiet, not noisy like gear drives that were common in late Fifties. However, belt was only good for about 85-90 horsepower, otherwise we would spend all afternoon trying to pick wires out of box-----

After a little "tune-up" on the engine, C & S built us another box---this time with chain drive-two upper and two lower sprockets w/ motorcycle chains. Unfortunately that one came apart with the stronger motor and damn near sunk the boat.

Pix shown are of the "Second" Generation---I sold the boat to a good friend who replaced the V-drive with a HallCraft (NOISY!) and installed the engine seen in pix. Also added the cav plate and refinished the boat. Eventually the Flatmotor blew and was replaced with a 265 Chevrolet.

Interesting story---The Lake where we normally boated (Lake Piru) had a regulation that all boats had to have a forward-neutral-reverse setup. Dad found a Willys Floor-shift transmission that measured something less than 8" in length, put it between the flat motor and V-drive. (There was only 18" from bellhousing to v-drive). One could reach the gear shift from drivers seat by reaching back-- Dad welded the shift forks together so that we had third gear, neutral and reverse. Reverse was kinda slow, no chance of swamping!!

When my friend redid the boat, he went thru the transmission too. Had to unweld the forks to get it apart. After replacing everything went to Naciemiento for water checkout. While there, decided to go for a ski ride, wife driving. Boat jerked him out of water, but didn't seem to go very fast---He kept signalling for her to speed up---
Got back to shore, she stated engine was showing around 4500-5000 on tach and wouldn't go any faster. He then discovered that she had put boat in SECOND gear, not high. Lesson learned.

No idea where boat is now--- tbird1.jpg tbird4.jpg tbird2.jpg tbird3.jpg tbird1.jpg tbird4.jpg tbird2.jpg tbird3.jpg

Rigged with a v-drive a Pantera is somewhat rare. Definately not as common as a flatbottom.

Looks like a cool ride! :cool

New to the site and figured I would post some pics of my restoration project. Filling the deck, new gel coat, new interior, refinish the floors, and so on and so on and so on:)

Very Cool boat and Read. My grandfather and a co hort tried to build a few boats back in the 50's, had a shop on blackstone ave. in fresno CA. He named his boats thunderbird, but I am sure it is not connected as I knew he built a tunnell design with twin 70 out board and went to parker, az to race
