Your opinion is just that, opinion. Frankly mine is as well but your logic does not compute.

How can it be a “free for all” if there are protected reserves that house elephants in their natural habitat? Simple because it is not a free for all.

So it must be the poachers that pay for the reserves since they are all honest and on the up and up right? No. The big game hunters are the main reason the preserves exist.

So only Africans are greedy, is that what you are saying? Because local governments give preferential treatment to people or business all the time, in every country. If some hunter gets an “advanced permit” to hunt in the reserve from the government that is the reason you are using to stop trophy hunting? If that revenue stream dries up, that will end wild preserves, and just allow poachers to kill elephants in an unregulated “free for all.”

You make a statement that the main reason reserves exist is due to "big game" hunters. Let's look at that logic.

The estimates I can find on the internet state that up to 500 elephants are killed per year by "paying" big game hunters. The estimate is also that although a trip to Africa to hunt costs more, the average fee paid to kill dumbo is 14,500. So that would equal 7.25 million per year.

Even if one doubled that you would get 14.5 million per year. I can not imagine that all the reserves in Africa are supported "mainly" by 7.25 or even 14.5 million dollars per year divided amongst all of them?

There is no question that paying to kill dumbo, or Cecil the lion is dollars the reserves would not have, but I can find no evidence that 7.25 or 14.5 million dollars per year "mainly" supports the roughly 200 game reserves in Africa as that is only 36,250 to 72,500 per reserve per year. That will barely buy two trucks without gas or maintenance for the staff. And that assume all the money goes to reserves and no money is siphoned off with corruption by the various levels of government or goes to the local communities.

Even if one cut that down so that all big game hunting was on 20 reserves, it still only ends up being 362,500 to 725,000 dollars per year for each reserve. It is hard to imaging that 725,000 makes up the "main" portion of reserve revenue especially given the hunters have repeatedly stated that much of these dollars are sent to local communities, some taken via corruption, and not ending up going to the reserves.

Double it again to 1.45 million per reserve, skim off the corruption and the portion sent to local communities, and it is hard to imagine a big game preserve can be "mainly" run on much less than 1.45 million per year? We can double it again if we like and it still comes up to trivial money compared to the cost of running a reserve.

I accept that some people want to hunt dumbo and want to bring back dumbo to stuff and put in their trophy room, but let's just be a little objective and recognize that the reason they support and pay this money is so that they can kill dumbo or cecil the lion.

Like I stated before, I have no standing to state if it is right or wrong to kill an elephant or a lion, but I do have standing to state that the "main" reason big game hunters pay for reserves, is so that they can kill things in the reserve. That is just a statement of fact. Let's just admit the truth.

Putting that all aside, I can't help but think that the only elephant that would even consider it might be OK to kill elephants in order to save elephants, is the elephant whom was not shot and killed.

You're point is valid , but you are dismissing the human encroachment, and the fact that we as humans will take whatever steps are necessary to protect and feed our families. It was brought up earlier that they are being poisoned. This is a travesty and reading about it truly saddened me. If the death of a few can save many there is logic in this as well .

No I didn’t Jim, I didn’t have much time.
I have not sugar coated my feelings anywhere in this thread about killing Elephants for sport, I disapprove.

You disapprove!! Not to worry, your feelings are noted. That doesn’t change the fact that when I duplicated your google search for Campfire Zimbabwe the biased National Geographic article was the fifth link with the previous four being a positive explanation of the benefits to the program.

You disaprove!!

I get it. Nothing factual presented will change that. I suggest you not hunt Elephant then.

As far as your repeated statement about the decline of the Elephant population I’m sure you know, since you are well researched on the topic, that the population counts recently done for USF&W show the population has increased in Zimbabwe, a country with blatant corruption.

You don’t approve, I get it.

The same increase in population has occurred in RSA, Namibia, and Botswana.

You don’t approve, I get it. I suspect though, there are some on this site that also didn’t approve of Elephant hunting, would never take part, that are now saying it seems well regulated Hunting actually has a place in conservation. An undeniable fact until your next cherry picked Google search

You don’t approve, I get it!!

Cheers

Tubby, I suspect many here actually feel the way you do with the exceptions being Steve and the guys from the reloading forum who are passionate in their beliefs.
As with most threads in P&G this one is Tribal also. Thanks for breaking with the sheep and being honest!

Do you actually think most hunters today hunt because they “need” the food? I lived in Bush Alaska and store bought food of any type was extremely expensive. Supplementing my food supply with Moose or Caribou made sense but I would survive without it.

The experience, challenge, and voluntary exposure to nature on its terms is the reason hunting is a big part of who I am. My wife is the same. We generally hunt as a team.

As far as scoped rifles versus sticks and stones are concerned man has since the beginning used the most important tool when hunting and surviving. His/her brain. Indians drove Buffalo over cliffs. Not very sporting I’d say and I would not use that technique today but it worked.

The one Elephant hunt we experience we chose to go early season at the end of the rains so the “Jesse” would be thicker. Not to give us better cover when stalking but to give the Elephant better cover. That made the hunt extremely dangerous. It was a tracking hunt on foot.

I did not use a scoped rifle. I used an Army Navy Old English double rifle with open sights built in 1902. I could have made this much easier hunting in September when the leaves are down and shooting from 100 plus yards with a scoped rifle. Nothing wrong with that. It’s legal and the Elephant just as dead.

The difference is the experience.

I’ve heard all the cliches in this debate numerous times. Why not take pictures? Simply because that would not be the same.

It’s not about killing an animal whether for subsistence or the experience. Hunting is more than that and can only be personally experienced to be understood.

I’ve introduced youth to hunting. To a person they all came away changed. It’s a solemn experience that can not be explained on an Internet forum.

So...did Trump lift the ban?

Not to play semantics but there never was a “ban”. USF&W in April 2014 halted import permits for Elephant until such time that they could obtain science based data on “enhancement findings”. Basically the status of Elephant populations in specific African Range States and whether the quota system gave benefit to the species. This process took a couple years and the findings were positive.

Trump interjected himself into the mix and returned the topic to a political venue including social media and away from the science.

I have not read or been informed of any changes based on his Ill concieved tweets. Time will tell I suppose. Hopefully science and the African Elephant will prevail.

That is a fair point, but we aren’t talking about America here. There isn’t insurance, there aren’t lawsuits, there isn’t social security, or vast regulations, there isn’t health care. There isn’t minimum wage. There is a fence around an area with a few dudes in old trucks with guns patroling it. If you get eaten by a lion in the preserve, everyone shrugs their shoulders and says “The dumb American should not have tried to get a selfie with a lion.”

There is trophy hunting of more than just elephants, and I’m sure there are tours or what not that bring in revenue.

If they weren’t making money, the preserves would not exist. If you take away part of that revenue stream, it makes it harder for them to exist.

Of course the reason hunters pay this money is to kill an animal.. I thought that was obvious.

Since hunters enjoy the hunt, perhaps "Poacher Hunts" would be a viable business and generate similar local revenue. It should prove to be even more exciting and make for more interesting stories around the camp fire, since they'll probably shoot back.
Would seem to solve two problems, one being the poachers and the other saving the elephants and other endangered species.

For the record, I only hunt with a camera as I no longer have any desire to shoot animals, well, gophers, I hate gophers.
Some people on the other hand, hmmmmm ;) And yes, I had the pleasure (Insert sarcasm emoji) of playing Army, should anybody wonder.

In the late 70's I had a guy who worked for me that on occasion would take time off. Seems he and a few "Buddies" were getting paid decent ($$$$) wages to hunt in then Rhodesia and it certainly wasn't animal-animals they were tracking and shooting.

What that continent needs is some serious birth control, but I suppose that could also be said for those other areas and demographic groups with the least amount of food and financial resources producing the greatest number of babies (Starving).

Dilly Dilly.....

Now that is a post I agree with 100%. It is not really sport unless they shoot back.

I've hunted elephants twice in Zimbabwe. Once in Chewore South and once in Dande East. The absolute simple fact of these two areas is they are not conducive to photo safaris. Simply not the abundance of game like you see in national parks nor is there the open spaces to see game easily from the truck. For the 24 days total that I hunted elephant in these two areas we seen a pair of cow elephant once from the road.

It's absolute fact in these two areas if there is no hunting revenue coming in that in no time the locals will put cattle on it. And where they put cattle everything else is poached off. I know this is such a foreign concept to us Americans, but the simple fact is the local Africans do not give two shits if they save any animals. They would prefer there be no game to eat and trample their crops and that eat and harass their families. With no hunting revenue it would all become desolate overgrazed cattle farms in no time flat.

I liken this situation to the buffalo population here in North America.. We pretty much killed them off because they were in the way. Africans do the same thing to wildlife. They don't have the luxury of first world problems.

So in short the entire thread, including the "misleading" title,is a moot point.

I hunted diligently growing up. Deer, fowl, small game and such. Now just Doves and feral hog and coyote eradication. I understand the hunting feel and how it works. It's a personal thing. I understand game and habitat management and how important it is and how serious.

I also grew up in a rural setting and how domesticated animals are raised and processed as food. Non hunters have great difficulty with this situation also.

I wager the same folks that look down on hunting have great difficulty viewing nature films with predators feeding.

These type debates seldom change any opinions.

Well maybe you weren’t following it but Trump admin (per media) said he was going to lift the ban on importation of elephant trophys into US from 2 countries. After a couple of days of backlash Trump himself said he is delaying “ this horor show of killing Elephants” and that’s were it’s presently at. That was also posted in this thread!
Of course that doesn’t suit your mantra and you would rather discredit the portion of the thread I have participated in while I know damn well you’ve read every post in it, know damn well what I meant and you’ve likely read every thing in the news about it while you sit on your drill rig all night long with nothing else to do.

Isn't that awesome! You and President Trump have something in common! You both are incomprehensibly ignorant of any sort of common sense when it comes to conservation and hunting.

Yep, ASE certified MasterTech is a tough road to plow, so many oil changes! Not to mention Can Bus diagnostics, Traction Control systems including radar cruise control and automatic human defense systems, you know same old tech field...just in a mobile body with hundreds of harshness and vibration issues along with the thermal heat soak problems with modern electronics. But yea, you are way smarter than I am bro!

Keep dreaming you stupid fuck.

Sounds like Shameus is pulling his same old shit. He's the only jackass that plays that card. Glad I can't see it.

So, have we determined that the thread title was fabricated by the op for no other reason than to, yet again, crow his trump hate from his imagined perch?

We had some pretty cool visitors on the topic with excellent points based on experience......Sad they had to witness the typical game playing pox we deal with daily

Yes... I was enjoying the discussion, especially the part with those who see the issue differently than I do. Of course, I may not have been among those 'pretty cool visitors'.

You were included of course......This forum is a tough one and it goes through periods where gamesmanship overwhelms the topic to ridiculous degrees.

And hunting as I'm sure you well know, brings out heavy emotions. Sadly to me, I for one understand to a large extent why anti's feel as they do and know they will never change. Especially those that have never really dealt with nature or been around agricultural environs where domesticated animals are raised as food sources.

Great post Tex.
However, I feel that the driving emotion for this entire thread's creation and perpetuation has little to do with animals, and much to do with the relentless nurturing and display of hatred of Trump by those who have lost their grip on sanity since Nov 8 last year.

I agree the OP was just another hater C/P to stir the shit.

But it became a great topic that attracted knowledgeable opinions only to have those rebutted by the resident cynics.

Especially the paranoid superior one who mentally tries to force himself onto his personal perceived center rail position. All the time never admitting or perhaps even realizing he's long fallen from that perch and is lying on the ground in the mud with the lesser beings......

As for the OP, his animal/hunting talk brings me the vision of him as Tinker in Brad Garrett's trophy room during the final scenes from Roadhouse.......;)

Lol! Great comparison!!

I have had the privilege of seeing the actual trophy room of our resident big game hunter, and I can only imagine the catatonic state that the soapbox crowers would be in if they experienced it.

Will we all be watching CNN Sunday the 14th?:D
http://www.cnn.com/shows/trophy-film

I'm going to give them a little advice.

RINO's love to disguise themselves as hippos. Now don't get me wrong, some of those RINO's are so fat with bribes, they may even appear as a hippo.

My advice........................shot the old turtle by the gorging pond first!!!

So in short the entire thread, including the "misleading" title,is a moot point.

It is not moot. Import bans effectively shut down the US safari market. The largest market. When that income is lost outfitters in Africa cannot pay for anti poaching, artificial wells, and employ local preventing poaching.

The result is loss of habitat and animals.

Late reply, but I disappeared for the he Hoilday and have been working.
Please forgive late reply.
