15 years since I've been to glamis at least. I took the kids to the drags and show them how to get down track from a bunch of big bro trucks for spectating for just that situation.
Sad deal.

I stopped glamis about 8 years ago. Back then i had no idea how the 'drags" were even allowed.
You PAY to use the land. The liabilities allowing the event never made sense to me .

I decided it was time to stop going to glamis when I felt I had to keep a pistola in my ugg boot for just in case.....

It occurred to me why go!

Last trip to Glamis was New Years 1994. It is a long drive for us and it was going down hill rapidly since we had been there a couple years earlier.
Glamis and Dumont and even Sand Mountain (at a lessor level) on big weekends have simply become the big city temporarily transplanted into the desert, with all of the problems that brings.
We have families with long traditions...I mean generations...going out for the holiday to be together and ride. You can tell these folks...their camps are clean, the music gets turned down by 10, they are watching their kids like a hawk when they are riding...You know... the people you want to camp next to.Those people are still going but they are reluctant to do so on big weekends, and I think that many are slowly changing their traditions and choosing other times to go. When the stress is less. When they don't have to deal with...

the people with way more $ than common sense, and absolutely no common courtesy. They are the ones who do the ghost camping and act like they own the damn place, and don't understand why the rest of us don't act like they do as well.

The people who simply view our OHV places and lifestyle as another place to invade, and....
Get stupid drunk and/or high and drive.
Get stupid drunk and/or high and look for fights.
"" """ "" and avoid their probation / parole officers while doing the stuff that got them the tail in the first place.
"" """ """ and steal anything they can get their hands on.
People who you don't even want to see on your block, let alone anywhere near your camp. The bangers. The tweakers.
People with no common sense. (The ones who don't have the $ of the first group, but are still damn dangerous)

And then we have the fine folks from BLM,, who will make certain the asshole who plows into a bunch of people in his rig while driving over his head has a permit, green sticker, and a whip, but they won't lift a finger to STOP him from killing people. For the life of me, I don't get it. I am told that the man driving the Toyota made several passes before actually crashing into the crowd. He even was yelled at and told to knock it off by spectators. Where was a ranger intervening and doing what was necessary to shut his act down?
The cynic in me wonders if the leftest managers in BLM mahogany row are not salivating thinking of these tragedies as simply more leverage to close down our public lands. If they did their damn jobs in the first place, like the well trained cops they should be....well...you get the picture.
Sorry for the rant. As a cop who actually gave a damn about the job...it fries me.

We also have to look at ourselves, my friends. Standing on the sidelines where people we don't know, and who's state of sobriety is legitimately an issue, are driving vehicles at or beyond their limits and the limits of the machine, at high speeds...why would you stack the deck against yourself like that? This isn't a NASCAR facility or an NHRA event, or even test and tune at a local track...
Find a hill a couple hundred yards away. Watch the circus from high ground.
Set up at the starting line, before they get into high gear.
We all drive defensively on the roads. We need to think more about the asshole threat out in the back country in our OHV's too.

Read in FB, Todd T was one of the first ones on scene to assist and give aid. The lady passed before the Heli landed :(
I am sure more will be released, but with her passing, it becomes vehicular manslaughter so not much will be posted until the PD release a report.

Good point.

I have a friend who was injured by an out of control car at the sand drags.

The courts found comparative fault of 50%.

More simply, if you stand there during the drags, you are going to take some of the liability for choosing to put yourself in that position.

Ghost campers are out of control in Glamis.
BLM ignores it and the land barons taping off and coneing huge sections.
95% of the people on the dunes are pretty good. That residual 5% is the problem.

When the friends of DUMONT did a rig count with the BLM it was estimated maybe 800 to 1100 rigs.
It was 10 times that.

Far more people out there having fun than people realize. Serious experiences are very rare.

End of January we’ll do a RDP Glamis trip on a quiet weekend. Other than broken suspensions and axels unlikely anyone will get hurt.

“Ghost Campers” are people who show up to a camping spot, namely one of the Pads in Glamis, unload all their shit and cone off or tape off a massive area to save then leave. Only to return at a later date and not have to deal with finding a spot to camp. Sometimes their stuff sits for weeks or month at a time and maybe somebody from another camp will keep an eye on their stuff while they are gone. It makes the area unusable for those that also want to camp and enjoy Glamis unusable. If I wasn’t of sound mind and judgement I’d burn their shit down every time I found people doing this ! Why can't the rangers do anything about the ghost campers?
If there's no permit displayed then confiscate their crap
It's the same on the lake when people put up their pop ups and chairs on a beach to save their spot
I want to drag their crap into the lake.
Then they just leave it for someone else to clean up

And we know where the "majority" of offenders are from.

Its a liability issue, if they tow the rv and trailer they can be liable for damage to the contents. Its been going on for years, some people I know put an employee out there for the week prior to the holiday weekend so that the camp is not a "ghost camp".

I've only been to Glamis once and fractured my wrist going down China wall at like 60mph on my banshee (whoops at the bottom were not my friend).

Just playing devils advocate here - What's so wrong about "ghost camping"? First come first serve right? Isn't Glamis like GIANT with endless sand to camp on? Is it just everyone wants to be all crammed in at the cool spot or what? Don't get me wrong, I don't do it. I don't know anyone that does it. Just curious.

Fuck big weekends in the sand or at the lake. I learned a few years back, amateur weekends are no fun, too many idots.

I do like how some posters on here are like, "too many cops" and others are like, "not enough enforcement". LOL Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

We go up to Williams camping and we have to scope out a place to camp.
First come first serve, not save.
We go back a month later and the same camper is in the same spot with nobody around.
Legally it's supposed to be only 2 weeks at a time
Be like the rest of us and get there early and find the right spot or don't camp at all

I left Glamis behind after my good pal Kevin Krause was killed New Year’s Day 2000. Him, along with several other bikes were jumping out of the g out at the bottom of olds on the east side, and several people were spectating just like the drags. One guy in a Chevy truck decided he was done spectating, and decided to leave. His route was right through the landing zone. Keven hit him 5 th gear pinned, about four feet off the ground. To give you an idea how hard the hit was, the passenger in the truck sustained a broken femur because Kevin and the bike hit the door so hard. The passengers parents actually sued Kevin’s parents for damages. We went a few more times, but as stated, the people, the cops, the big buggies made it not a family environment for us.

So I guess it's not the 60's-70's out there anymore huh???? Imagine that!! Parker isn't the same either. There are WAY to many people in this world of ours now and NO way to control STUPID people and people that have more fricken money than brains. As noted in the other thread, I have NOT been out there in over 40 years, anybody old enough to remember the pump up, gravity feed pumps out there many moons ago. I really don't remember ANYONE loosing their life out there back then and it was actually fun.

We always parked quite a bit back and watched from the bed of the truck. With the cab facing thebdrags. Always hoped that if shit went wrong give ourselves the best chance for survival.

Great post - it’s all about situation awareness and thinking what could possibly go wrong.... how can I avoid being a patient .... sometimes, leaving is the best option.

Back then...

People were happy to even Get to the top of Olds! There was a lot more common sense, and no internet. The only time you got to go to awesome places like Glams (and Parker), were when your friends who went, invited you to go with them, and taught you the etiquette of the place.

Personally, I think the internet is a double edge sword...

It gives us access to tons of good information, but also allows the idiots to take advantage of that same information.

Got a favorite spot? Share it with the world how cool it is, then watch it slowly be distroyed.

Be careful what you post people...

And don't forget, Parker is closed.

Next thing you know they'll be doing like our famed sandbar,
shutting down Glamis on holiday weekends.
They shut down the one hill (forgot the name) by the hwy when it gets dark due to the sketchy things going on
We went to do some shooting on saturday and thought we would head away from the popular riding areas.
There were people riding everywhere.
The sand dunes at Crystal beach must have had a dozen riders
It's not just glamis or parker, it's everywhere.
The SXS industry has exploded over the years and the bad apples are going to ruin it for everyone

I wasn't talking Just about Glams Dave...

And of Course, this would be your opinion. As I said, the whole thing is a double edge sword.

Far more good than bad, thankfully.

Competition Hill you mean, Olds was barely accessible to most let alone conquerable.
I always thought Olds got its name from the first to summit it.:p
It's been since the Wash rd got rerouted that I've been to G., like maybe the 2nd season it was first done and you could still go under tracks to Boardmanville.

That was Competition Hill they shut down on weekend nites sometime in the latter 90s or so. The shit show moved to Olds. Kinda backfired since it was harder to patrol and/or get injured out...at least Comp was right next to highway.
The 70's had its own crazy vibe, intoxicated drivers were just as common and magnesium fires(vw engine cases) were the rage. Super hot fires that lit up the entire valley like a football stadium.
It was common to hear of peeps coming home from a glamis weekend with broken bones. The speed of offroad vehicles have increased equally with it's capability, sadly so many of the fast cars do not have drivers that evolved with them.o_O:oops:

I remember one time there was five vee dub blocks in the bowl at the bottom of comp. zero wind, and high humidity. The smoke settled out in that bowl, and you couldn’t see the buggies in the bottom, only the fires. It was like breathing liquid metal. The entire place cleared out, and sat on top of the ridges, and started new fires.

It was actually the early 2000’s when they decided to close Comp after the idiots would come in off the highway and dig trenches and beat the shit out of people who got stuck in their quads in them and numerous other bullshit.

The only time I ever went to Glamis, we went to Comp hill. This was probably 2001. Big huge excursion driving through and got stuck in trench. People tried to destroy that truck from what I remember, until he finally got it out.

Jesus....has no idea that kind of shit was going on out there. Always thought the problems were contained to overcrowding, running out of talent / experience and DUI. That’s just plane crazy shit

Sad! $5 in your pocket and a part-time job, they will finance a UTV to any ass fuck in the world. So turned off from going to Glamis on the weekends due to the crowds, thug life mentality and ghost campers saving space its a shame to see another fun place ruined.
No different than a street bike, high powered ATV....etc. They’ll all kill you for $0 down $149 a month

I remember hearing a story of another truck getting stuck in dug out trench, where a crowd pulled occupants out and then lit it on fire.

Appeared to be an SAS, not exactly the ideal set up whoops and dunes. Even if it had full hydro steering that failed, it appears he had plenty of time to shut it down

The hay days of comp have long been gone. It's been closed on holiday weekends for over 15 years. All that crap that used to go on out there is why there is so much police presence there now. The sxs really seemed to up the popularity of glamis as well.

The drags have always been that dangerous, we've always parked at the starting line due to the possibilities of a car going into the crowds. Rip for those involved. We probably haven't been to the drags in 5 years or so, to many police, people drinking and driving in one place.

Sand highway by Osborne usually has a DUI checkpoint ( registration check point). If you don't drive on the highway its completely avoidable.

Olds is pretty cool, as long as you park a few rows back and don't ride the hill when the big boys are out. Usually hang there for a bit and then go duning. You can go all day and not hit the same piece of sand.
We stay in the washes as there is too many of us to try and fight for a spot on gecko. Yeah its dusty, but less chance of someone doing 100 by your camp. Typically the BLM or sheriff's roll through once a day and check for registration and that's about it.

Like all places, there's good and bad. Alot of the chaos that goes on out there is completely avoidable if you pay attention to your group and surroundings. A little common sense goes a long ways.

You are correct.

When they fixed wash road, it created way more problems than it solved.

At least where we liked to camp anyway.

I have absolutely no problem with an inexperienced jackhole going into debt, and killing themselves. I'm no saint, and not into "saving lost soles". On the other hand, you take that same vehicle, sxs, quad...pwc...and turn it into a projectile...that is when innocent people get hurt. People should be aware of their own safety as well. If your friends want a closer look, that's fine. Be on your toes, and look out for the best interests of the youths around you. Even the 20-somethings...they haven't seen what can happen, and maybe it's best if they only see it from a distance. Youth and arrogance go hand in hand. My youth is gone, but occasionally my arrogance shows itself. Better to be that bossy friend of friend, than be the guy who has to make that call to another parent, wife or husband. It makes for long nights driving home, or in the waiting room.

I have not been back to glamis since 97" when my oldest daughter was born. I was over the whole Dune Goon scene really quick, less than 8 years, and I am so glad to never have gone back. so sad but it happens everywhere, we are flesh and blood not steel, shit happens when you are stupid..and so sad for the families who lost loved ones.

ill never stop going to glamis. everything and everybody in my life has been as a result of that place. similar shit happens at the river (pontoon crash at parker this weekend), or on the way to and from the river.. social media has just made these events along with everything else easier to read and hear about.
Been going since 87 olds use to have more people during the day in mid to late 90s comp was packed then too at day and night,Been going all t day week since 06 and then olds had more people on a tues night vs the past 2-3 years on thanksgiving or friday night the same weekheck seen them shut it down on a tues or wed night back then too.Now its mellow yes many idiots on SxS that are new to sport they hink they can just pop up i na bowl you are already in and drive their fart sounding rides right in front of you.

You can still escape the madness in the dunes as you already know by avoiding the known areas, connect the dots and stay out of that area.I noticed it seemed like less rangers out this year.Normally on wed morning they arrive in big numbers all parked in front of station this year way less even for their thursday morn meeting. We only had one come by camp on his quad was same guy from last year hung out for a few then left for his rounds.
