Time to git the spring toys out...getting ready to fire up a new-to-me float. Dry stacks might piss off a few neighbors 🤭

u got the kalawian from stu...i had it advertised for a while u got a good dealio
Yea been working on her a little...fried the module in the distributer, coil smoked also upon first startup. Got a new module and called pertronix after reading the instructions, I think what fried it was the plug wires. It says to use rfd suppressed wires, not core. The tech said the core wires will fry the electronic ignition in a couple of hours!
Putting some accel on, prolly fire it tomorrow, I'll let ya know. Boat is pretty clean, cept for the paint...can't wait to get er floatin.

The pits in Oakland were a dust bowl.
At least he got his free box of Champion Sparkplugs!

Got a little done on the Long Deck.
Rails cut to length. Need to set up the table saw and cut to width.
Super happy to get the vdrive in mock up.
Typically we mount them at 96” from the transom when the strut comes in at 8 degrees as most B Boats are. This one is at 8.25.
The original strut was at 9 degrees.
My worry for this boat was the long deck and having room for the throttle pedal and being comfortable.
Julian built the Race Deck to get his legs out from under the deck as well as comfort.
At 96 inches in this boat the front of the vdrive is about even with the deck.
I ended up at 92.5 by shortening up the propshaft package…8 degree shaft log, D21 3 seal propshaft seal, I machined a narrowed steel Safety collar and will shorten up a 5 bolt steel coupler a bit as well. I won’t run aluminum collars and couplers.
Another cool advantage of moving the vdrive back is it will drop the engine and lower the center of Gravity👍
Should be plenty of room to get that right foot down in there.

Throwback to our family boat from the 70's early 80's. Aquacraft wood deck with a big block chrysler. I sat between my folks on the bench and my sisters sat by the motor. This boat is what kicked off my love of the river. I used to sit in it, in the garage and pretend I was cruising the strip.

If I could ever find this boat...........

Why not use a u-joint @ the output flange to lower the eng?

I'll contribute one of my favorites. It was taken in March 2003, at the Lake Lavon ramp. I had just finished taking the first run on the water after the sixteen month restoration effort.

I bought the boat in November 2001, and the day after returning from LHC I began completely disassembling it. Before that I'd never even sat in a v-drive.

I have done that before.
A couple of boats I had to clearance the floor a bit to get the pan to fit.
On a runnerbottom with a 7.5 or less strut, I’ve had to clearance the floor to set the vdrive case in.
You do what it takes.
My point in the post was, you move the Vdrive back 3.5 inches from the standard 96” to gain foot and leg clearance in this long deck and you have changed the angle of driveshaft a fair amount lowering the engine in the boat.
Might be some grinding or welding in my future 😂

I understand and appreciate your explanation. Thank you.

I remember back when the top SS teams would have a custom oil pan and a greek coupler to get the motor as far down as possible. Not sure what that was worth, but Im sure Terminal velocity would know.

What was it worth? TV may have a definitive answer, but on any type of high performance vehicle that turns, any time you can lower the the center of gravity it will reduce, let’s just call it on a circle boat “hull roll”, during cornering and will help the boat maintain it’s line and stability throughout the turn.
Can’t hurt in the chutes either, especially on race water, for stability and a wee bit of aerodynamics at speed.
Every GN bottomed boat I’ve built, the engine has about been sitting on the floor.
A higher center of gravity really is very detrimental to a V bottomed hull.
Find some video of the Nordic that runs the Enduro! Wow, talk about Chime walking!

In my tiny little mind it's hard to imagine 3/8 of an inch doing all that much....?

Dean Neal's motor always looked super low to me.

This is the only picture I remember seeing of the Silver capped Long Deck Cold Fire on the water…
2993DB85-ECBF-4F7F-9D51-5C8B76CF2465.jpeg

The bottom went bad so he scrapped it and built the Cold Fire Race Deck.
This picture was taken behind the shop.
Boat on the right is the original Cold Fire that was crashed at the Kilos in Parker and the one on the left is the one above.

It's only 13 feet long and 5 feet wide Corvette 350 small block. It only runs a solid 63 MPH and it will turn on a dime at that speed. And I only need 6 inches of water to run it. I'm usually running it up in Disneyland Gasoline alley or on the jetski track at body beach. And it's just a lot of fun to rip in and out of all the coves.

Couple great shots of Gordon Jennings in the Withers and Primm Special!

He was a really great guy.
Got to spend a fair amount of time with him as he was super close to my friend Dick VanBeenan.
The bottom picture is from up in Washington in 1974.
The next week they went to Provo, Utah for a race and Gordy lost his life in a crash on the opening lap of a heat race.
Julian was right next to him and spun around and jumped in the water with him.

Speaking VanBeenan, here’s a great shot of him in the former Withers and Primm Bubble Deck getting ready to go out and battle with the great Bill Foster in the SK class in San Diego in 1973.

VanBeenan later crashed this boat when the engine locked up and barrel rolled it(No whirl aways back then).
He was the first Circle Boat racer to flip a boat with a LifeLine Chute Jacket. 😁

Good stuff Dave! Somewhere around here I have video that Gordy gave me of Gordon Sr's first race boat launching in San Diego. I was pretty young the first time I remember seeing Liberty racing at Long Beach. :)

VanBeenen is a national treasure! Hope he's doing well! Julian told me the tragic story and before getting to know Julian I didn't realize he and Gordon were friends.

When I met Van Beenen at lake San Antonio back in 1996 he gave me a pretty gnarly ride across the lake in this boat. I'm sure you know this was a pretty light boat and the lake was far from calm that day. lol

I snapped that last photo at Elsinore 7 or so years ago. I think D21 Phil just posted it minus the excessive color correction on fb. Love the cammer and photo of White trash when Constantino owned it floating at the avi. 👍
That's a great shot👍 way to go!

Super cool shot!

Yep Thanks Dave! We set that up because of all the outboard vs v-drive bench racing in the old Hot Boat Forum days. That's BAE Andre holding Billy's boat on the right. He got a little too drunk that weekend. Without knowing he had a vagina drawn on his forehead, he and the rest of us marched right into a restaurant for dinner that night. The waitresses let him know about the art work. haha
