1st, who is steven Lapraun?
2nd, what shop was the boat stolen out of?
3rd, I take it that's Clayton that owns the OL?

He owns the OL, but confused why he is in this? Not that I care, just don't know the backstory.

EDIT: Facebook quickly cleared up the backstory issue :D

Can you elaborate. I don't bookface

Sounds like he took his boat there, paid some money, work was not done, and parts were missing. I'm not saying this the story as I'm not involved, but how I took what I read and saw. CS posted a pretty telling IMO video on his page.

This reminds me SO much of a lot of people I worked with, worked for and bought parts from back in the mid 70s to the mid 90s. I guess all business's have their assholes but the boat biz sure attracts more than it's share.

Clayton always seems to have a problem with a boat shop.

Yep..

That said Steven did some pretty shady shit to a lot of different people. He bought an engine from Nordic with his ex’s credit card. The ex disputed the charges and when Nordic went to get the motor back it was installed in someone boat and gone!

One of many stories. Honestly I thought he was gonna get arrested around New Years. Wheels turn slow but they do turn.

I posted about this guy a few years back. When I first bought my boat, I had it serviced at OCM. ( I now know how Tim bought and sold boats, didn't at the time) This guy was their main wrench.

Took my wife and kids out on it for the first time. My wife wasn't a big water person and was waay out of her element. We start getting steam coming from the bilge, a lot of steam. Poor girl thought the boat was on fire and had our kids in the bow ready to jump overboard. :D

Take the boat back to the shop to get the gernaded impeller fixed. Not only does he not back flush the water system to remove the rubber chunks of the broken impeller, he decides that the water test of the repair should entail running by boat 100+ across Windsor Bay.

Have a few more stories...

Cobra Power in Florida. Clayton claimed the owner Randy put used parts in his fresh rebuilds. Though, not totally shocking Randy was accused of something shady since he was involved in the Card Shark debacle and others have pointed out various shady dealings with him.

Again, the boat biz!!

Actually, I think that thread is what lead me here.

EDIT: It was someone else :D

If he’s expecting Gary to finish it, expect to not be on the water any time soon. Took him several months to tell me that it would take him several months to get my heads done [emoji849]

This was an oops last year from owner that he was having him build into a 568 or something and it was a long drawn out dramatic issue after issue process that i was hoping was over! I would’ve lost it after a month but that’s me I guess.

Tank,

Wow, Randy G. and this Steven guy in one place together, talk about two snakes!. Throw in Darr as the ringmaster and TooOld as the parts guy.

I remember the Cobra Power story years back, it was great reading during lunch.

There's never been a lack of shady mo-fo's in the powerboating industry. I think it's the allure of people with disposable money that scammers can easily access.

Freakin' TooOld / Trick Marine. I bought a few things from him back in the day and never had an issue. I was pretty shocked he ended up burning so many people. Dude was a fixture for a long time.

Tank,

The deals about both Fred and Troutly were both interesting metldowns. I also bought few hardware items from them and no problems. Talked to Troutly at Loto before...

Still doesn’t make sense that it was a 496 stolen but I don’t think Clayton’s OL would have a 496 so not sure why he’s involved?

According to his Facebook it looks like money paid for services not rendered, and missing parts. Has nothing to do with a 496 on the Outerlimits

Outside looking in...question:
Is it common for a shop in the boating world to take months to build a motor and repower? I would assume Havasu has a competent machine shop. If not, even hauling parts to Vegas or Phoenix is doable. Just curious.

No of course not. Anyone running a profitable shop should be able to turn that around in a reasonable timetable for a straightforward repower.

The engine builder I use is always a few month out just to start on it. If they are good they are busy.

That's what I thought, but not knowing this aspect of boating I thought I'd ask. Never had anyone do motor swap stuff for me, and maybe high end boat stuff is made of "unobtainium":)

I can see that with specialty things. We have a guy in town here that has been building a motor for a Kindig project...since the first of the year. But that said, this guy in the post seems to have a relatively normal setup, not too much custom, and certainly nothing hand fabbed. With your builder, is he just out that far, or would he have everything that long? Being months out, even a year, is pretty normal for resto shops and custom car builders. Like you said, if they're good, other people want them too.
