I know everyone is always talking about podiums and racing etc.. I bought mine to go have fun in the desert..

If you have never done desert bash it is a blast.. albeit it can be daunting because the washboard and slower traffic and dust can be out of control sometimes..

Every year I have done it I always have my cars prepped (literally everything tightened), I don’t drive like an asshole although I do cruise a little faster than most.

I’ve done it in rhinos, teryx, my big ranger, my can am.. the course changes a little year to year but for the most part it’s still the same big loop.

With the exception of one year in my 2017 non turbo I have never done the whole run without moderately breaking something.. usually axles.

The washboard can be so brutal that I’ve actually sheered A pillars on my ranger.. snd came back in front wheel drive with both rears broken.. lol.

By the time we left we were the absolute last car, to the point they have removed all the course markers from the front of the course.. we did about 20-30 miles going out and seeing the trail was smooth and realizing we went the wrong way so going back.. rinse lather repeat. then even ended up running about 5 miles of the course backwards before trying yet again.

Finally I just said fuck it we will go for a long ride “that way” until we find somebody.. and we found a course marker that said 18 miles.. our friends were behind us a ways and our group got spread out.

We found two different rdp groups along the way including @Bpracing1127. I inspected his bumpers for nerf damage and didn’t find any.. lol

my biggest take away from the run with regarding the speed.. the cruising speed is much much faster than my old x3.. 10-20mph faster in most cases..

When we got back we weren’t worn out and beat up from the ride, and actually woulda ran it twice if anyone wanted to go..

My carnage of the day was I lost one roof bolt.. that’s not too bad for running 80+ miles Offroad in a supposedly unreliable car.

I gave about seven people rides throughout the weekend.. every single one of them came away and said “holy shit.. I didn’t know what to expect but it wasn’t that”. Also let a few people go and drive it for themselves.

@Bpracing1127 was supposed to come by and drive it but never did. Next time I suppose..
Thanks for the offer Dave. It didn’t work out as I had to rescue bails and had my 5 yo with me. Next time for sure.

I will say I was really comfortable sitting in your car when you stopped with us for a bit.

As far as running it twice now you’re speaking my language. Given how slow it is (traffic and people who don’t pull over) would be nice to run it twice and haul ass the second time, I bet we would still pass people on the second loop.

I wanna drive it. I'll give honest review. If it self-implodes, not my fault 🤣

Big boy rules...

You break it, you own it.

The morale of the story? Don't drive anything you can't afford to own.

This is RDP. You are supposed to hand over the car's value in cash before driving your friend's car.

Did you ever get the windshield / overheat situation figured out?

No I've been crazy busy.. we put the windshield back in it for Desert Bash.. It's next on my list to start fucking around with.

My friends all have the same rule = It breaks when you are driving, you are fixing it. Does not matter who owns it :)
It was a joke about “self-imploding”, since they don’t have the best track record so far, that you must’ve missed.

So you get a flat tire you have to buy the whole vehicle? 😂 I sware some of you guys comment just to comment. If Dave questioned my ability to buy/fix it, I highly doubt he’d let me drive it.

100%. Last time I got a flat towing my FIL’s trailer, I fixed it and returned it as good as new.
Was driving a friends CanAm, hit a rock and damaged tire. I drop shipped him a replacement tire.
It’s how I roll and most folks I spend time with have the same thought process.

Now accidents and major self-implosions are different :).

I think the key word being "self". if the car "self" implodes, sure it is what it is.. If ya run it off a cliff, then that's yours.. LOL

Yes I ran all of desert bash with the windshield on.

RD
So did the overheating issue go away on its own, or did something change? I remember you said originally the car also had the factory window nets on. What was the difference?

They only overheat if you drive them fast for periods of time.. It isn't crazy fast or long periods but that's the circumstances.. So in hotter weather if you drive 45 mph for 4 minutes straight the temps will build and then spike to an overheat quickly.. It was cooler this weekend so if I drove 50-60 mph for 3-4 minutes it would start building temp.. but if I slowed down or stopped it would drop rapidly.

In most desert terrain that's rough / hills etc you aren't running those speeds for very long unless you are in a wash or something.. Most of desert bash is trail running so it wasn't that big of an issue.

New video, looks like speed blew a motor

That is Todd’s car. Robby claims it was due to the aftermarket turbo install. There was some static about it but they are warranting it but said they won’t be warranting anymore with aftermarket turbos after that. Which is why I pulled that turbo off mine and put the updated speed turbo in.

That said I don’t think the motor is blown. I think it is the decompression system in the cams that failed, it will make a lot of racket like that if they do..

Some guys are removing them off the cams already. I’m not gonna do it because I’d have to imagine that is definitely voiding your warranty..

This is a pic of the cam being removed on another car and they cut the decompress deal
Off the cam with a die grinder.. (sounds rough but it actually made sense and turned out pretty good in reality)

People can do whatever they want.. if they want to run aftermarket stuff just don’t expect a warranty.

Speed has offered to update the cars on their dime.. if it isn’t factory I can understand not wanting to warranty it.

I added to my post above.. in my opinion I think it would be better to remove that decompression system all together.. but I’m not going to do it..

Interesting read;

There is some talk of the ”Speed Key” in there and it looks like it will be a while.

Basically as I understand it, the speed key needs top end lubrication. Not sure how they get that (either oil injection or mixed fuel) right?

Assuming the car doesn’t have top end oil injection I am assuming you need to add oil to the fuel somehow. Because of that it won’t pass CARB. Well it might but needs to be retested. (I believe this is where they are at now)

Like last time carb doesn’t do anything fast.

Hypothetical question, what happens when someone sues for false advertising if the speed key never comes to play? Or for the guys who paid more than 1$ for it? Again hypothetical but curious

Sounds like a solid investment.

I have bought and sold quite a few over the last few years and did pretty well on them. At one point I had six, then down to 2.. then if I’d catch a low number on the cheap I’d pick it up..

I just recently sold 326.. it was the twin to my car. I have 606 which is an rg and built slightly differently. I still have 526 which is an el Diablo (stretched two seater)

Post #6378. So the cars are not equiped with power steering as standard equipment? I didn't know that. 🤔

And this is why I don’t play with my friend’s toys…

When my BIL, got his new CanAm, we went for a nice little ride. I was beyond blown away by how the thing handled. It took the turns and Big whoops with ease.

We get back, and he looks at me and says...

You wanna drive it?

I just said, naw, that's ok.

I'm my head I was thinking...

I'll wad this thing up in 2 seconds flat trying to see what it can Really do!

😱🤣

Are the new ones being delivered with the "new" turbos already installed?
