I love the fact that you are doing all your own machine work, it's an art now days since they don't actually fix anything anymore, just replace parts..:)

SO many critical measurements to actually build a motor correctly.

Then you have the performance side, 3 angle valve seats, porting and polishing, blueprinting and balancing etc.

Then setting it up, knowing your static compression, what octane to run...it's overwhelming for most people:p

I'm only doing the grunt work on the motor. Lolol..

I left the block machining, head work, crank balancing to the pro's. I'm am VERY fortunate to have good friends that own an engine shop. They let me clean parts and scrape gaskets. Lmao...

I'll get to help with assembly. :D

I think I'm almost done blending all these different shapes together.

Trying to imagine how the air will flow through it is something to get your head wrapped around for sure.

I have no idea if this will work or not...

Never know till you try.....

Very true.
I have the stock one to compare it to, and it'll get dyno'd with both. I won't just run it and hope for the best, lolol...

Really hoping the difference is something I can live with.

Time to yank the motor again. I need a better look at the existing plenum to see about that map sensor. Also want to get a few measurements. 2017-01-31 16.32.25.jpg

I'd be interested in seeing the rest of that cutter setup you were using to rough the material out and then finish passes etc

It was just a roughing cutter. Nothing special.

It's already complete. The finish will never be seen, as it fits over the tubes.

This is my buddies place. Jason has 2 boys, and I coached them both when they played pop warner football with my son. His are older and younger than mine. Lol... 2017-02-02 11.24.29.jpg

This is the best pic I have of the cutter.

Ran the block through my tablesaw. Saved a ton of time, and I didn't have to worry about the blade wandering.

After tracing the throttle body with a sharpie, I trimmed off the rest with the mitersaw.
A flap disc will make quick work of forming the rest of the shape.

Let me know how you get the timing chain cover on over a dual row chain and have the short leg water pump clear. I've struggled with that and didn't have an answer without botching up the accessory belt alignment.

Standard cover fits right over it. No gasket yet, but shouldn't be an issue? 2017-02-17 12.51.42.jpg

I just set the valve covers on because I couldn't stand it anymore. Lolol..

The oil pan that showed up was not the one that was ordered. Apparently Milodon isn't capable of putting the correct part in the box. :grumble:
Without the pan to double check the fit of the pickup, the oil pump isn't installed yet.

I did paint it before I left this evening. I'll be back over there tomorrow and grab another pic.

We're also changing out the valve locks, as they interfere with the guides on the roller tipped rockers.

My stock cover wouldn't fit and a taller cover interfered with the water pump. :(

Trash, was yours a one piece rear seal block? They have a different front cover that I could see causing headaches. The big block ones do too. You're stuck with a single row chain in those apps.

This is a 1972 400 block, so it's a 2-piece, old school small block with newer Vortec heads.

That is exactly it. Late model 1 pc rear main seal. Thanks! Mystery solved.

I'm pretty sure that my first motor in the hula has a single, or stock type timing chain. That block is from a '96 or '97 1/2 ton pickup. One piece rear main. Also has the newer type cam keeper dealio on the front.

Like hydroskreamin said. This new build is a really old block with newer goodies.

I wish it was in this year's budget for the AFR heads and supercharger, but that's next year's upgrades. Not quite ready to cut the hole in the hatch just yet.
