Shit dude! When do you sleep??

I've recently become a somewhat single guy. I don't need much sleep. Kids spent all day with their mother, so I got bored and got my ass to work. Lol...

Finished up measuring the bores, knocked the cam bearings out, chiseled out the epoxy, (in a prior life, it was a dry sump), pulled all the oil gallery plugs, scraped what was left of the gaskets, and gave it a bath. 2016-12-26 18.01.02.jpg

This used to be my block, and I plucked it from a 1972 Chevy Biscayne that had been a local police car when new. That's right; it's a cop motor! And it was almost a 440 'plant, at 436 CID!

I grabbed this block and machined it when I worked at KPE (Kippley Performance Engineering) in the 1990's. This shop catered to NTPA truck and tractor pullers, as well as the local stock car scene. I left in 1995, and as Matt Kenseth was one of our local customers, KPE became Robby Reiser's power of choice for the then "Busch" series, with Kenseth driving. We were definitely set up to machine small block Chevy's, and I wanted to do everything to this one for me, as I did it to customer blocks all day long.

This block was machined in 1994, and all main galleries were drilled larger, dry sump priority main oiling (front of block, top of china wall), decks plugged for stiffness and redrilled to appropriate sized water passage, steel main caps installed, ARP main bolts, align bored, decks blueprinted on jig to 9.000", lifter bores machined in blueprint jig and bronze bushed. It took a 4.165" bore to clean it up, as the decks were crooked front to back AND side to side, kind of normal for that age of block.

I had intentions of using it in my '61 Impala, as it was machined at 408.5 CID, close enough to 409 for me! I decided I didn't want as serious of an engine on the street as this was built to be, no dry sump for me. I machined a wet sump block for the '61, and had this one in my stash until 2008. I was building a house, (That's how I met HeadlessHula, he was a sub on my house and we became friends) and needed some cash for an overage that we really wanted to finish, so I sold this block to my friend Charlie Rossier, founder and former owner of Rossier Dyno Research, the company that did a lot of factory SeaDoo engines back in the 1990's. I meet Charlie when we worked at PSI together developing products for the then new SeaDoo.....gets to be a small world, doesn't it?

Charlie has had his 1979 Camaro ever since I've met him, and I've lost count of the number of engine combinations it, as it's over a dozen. His car turned from a street terror to a track car, as RoadAmerica is within 90 minutes of my house, and probably 2 hours from his, Blackhawk Farms about the same. Charlie added a 4" arm to this case and with the 4.165" bore had himself a nice little 11.0:1 436" powerplant. He ran this engine in hydraulic and solid roller versions from 2009-2016. I introduced Charlie to my friends Dan and Paul at AEC (Advanced Engine Concepts) in Green Lake, WI. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Advanced-Engine-Concepts-Inc/226412914070974 Dan Timm and Paul Schwandt used to work for Carl Wegner, owner of Wegner Automotive Research, the famed V6 Buick and small block Chev stock car engine builder. That's right, Dan and Paul used to be in the "enemy" camp when I was at KPE, and we are good friends now. I recommend AEC to all of my friends for automotive machine work, as they are top notch. Most of their work today is for SCCA, and they are some busy boys. This is where I sent HeadlessHula to machine his first engine, which he had started elsewhere. Anyway, Dan suggested for the power levels that the 436 was making, Charlie would be better off with a new aftermarket block, so they built him another 436 with either a WorldProducts or Dart block, I don't remember which, but it is in the 650 HP range on pump fuel, and has a really nice torque curve.

Here's a pic of the track car the engine came out of, taken at a track day in 2015 at RoadAmerica:

IMG_1265.jpg

I've ridden with Charlie with this engine powering the car to low 160's on the front stretch at RoadAmerica. It will live on an make even more exciting history in the HeadlessHula!

It is a piece for the HeadlessOne to gain some knowledge on engine machining and building that he really wants to learn and understand, and this is a good unit for him to do that on.

Do you guys remember way back at the beginning of this thread, when I said I was working with some folks that have been around race boats, engines, etc?

Get the picture now? Hahahahaha.

I am very fortunate to have the friends that I do. For that I am grateful.

The first order of business was to clean up the "China wall " surface, that was given a couple passes, removing around. 005"

2016-12-28 13.12.58.jpg

After that, the attention was turned to resurfacing the decks. 2016-12-28 13.13.39.jpg

New deck height is 8.994"

Once that operation was completed, it was time to get the bores whipped back into shape.
2016-12-28 13.14.03.jpg

Finished bore diameter is at 4.175

For now, we'll be waiting for some pistons to show up :D

So you've gone one size up on the bores? How much wear was in the worst one?

Also, I was able to finish painting my shop walls with the epoxy topcoat. When I got home last night, I rebolted my bench to the wall, washed the windows, and got a ton of the outlet cover plates back on. I literally just got home from the machine shop. Now it's time to get the rest of the shop in order. I have speaker pods to make! 20161227_161619.jpg

Cleaned out the other side of the shop. Little miss took advantage of the open space we have to fly the little drone. The dog wasn't really sure what to make of it. Lol...

Thank you Poncho. Happly New Year, my friend!

You're welcome, wonder where the hell that thing was for 3 weeks. When I first told you I sent it and you should have it probably sounded like a story, that was the last one they had made 2 years ago when they opened the place...looks great in you're shop. My only regret living in a lake house, no shop.

I had to stop flying mine anywhere near my dog, she was set on kill from the start. Yesterday was tough, I had to put her down...Fuck that was hard, drank my sorrows away last night for sure. Telling the Vet not to go any further had to be one of the hardest decisions I ever made, turned me into a little girl.

I look forward to the progress report as you go forward on the boat, kind of reminds me of that guy years ago that decided to try and make his Stingray go 100MPH, not sure if he ever got there but sure made for one Hell of a thread....Fucking internet gold.

Happy New Year and may the year be a blessing to you and yours.

RIP Callie, we had a good run.

I grabbed a crusty old chunk of irrigation pipe from my buddies scrap pile. Maybe I can turn it into a plenum for this manifold.

Why are you changing the manifold top?

I have 2 of these manifolds now.
The second one didn't come with a plenum. :D

And I agree with your much earlier statement. They are as rare as hens teeth. ;)

Aah, that makes sense then.

I'd like to be able to use the factory flame arrestor also.
Remember that it interferes with the water hose on the exhaust riser?

Yeah, it depends on which exhaust manifold you use. I worry about linkage and throttle rigging when you start moving the TB assembly around, but that's because I'm not a good fabricator.

I told him to put the TB wherever it flowed the best and fit. As far as the linkage goes, that's what bellcranks are for.;)

Just walked into the garage and took this picture.
I'll have JUST enough room to place the TB out the front.

As far as fabricobbling a linkage, I'm sure we'll come up with something ;)

Be sure to account for the TPS and IAC connection integrated into that TB. While you're at it integrate an air-water intake charger cooler built into your new manifold top. :D

So, HydroSkreamin taught me to use a hose clamp to get a straight line around a pipe.
That gave me a point to layout my cut. 2017-01-09 21.05.41.jpg
After some patience with my newly purchased horrible freight bandsaw, I was able to slice the aluminum tube.

I've always liked the look of fabricated/ sheet metal intakes. I don't think my welding is quite up to snuff to pull that off, so I'm keeping all the welds inside, and grinding the outside flush. 2017-01-26 09.14.38.jpg

My grinding skills surpass my welding... for now :D

I'll need to make some sort of plate or block to attach the throttle body to the plenum, and then blend the block to make the inside surfaces jive.
