Used to go 177 to 62. Not any more. No traffic this way. 55mph speed limit on a lot of it but I think it's quicker to the 40.
29 Palms, turn up towards the Base. turn right on the road to Amboy/ Rte 66, right onto 66, then left up to the 40.
Deserted most of the way.

Stay safe out there Boys. Shit goes South quick sometimes. Back to back wrecks took me out, '07. '08. Not at fault, but that doesn't really matter...

Didn't expect a backup of traffic with the repaving which caused the 40-50 cars to stack up.
He did say quite a few cars were making the mass-pass even though he was doing almost 75.

this week they paved the eastbound lane. Assuming westbound maybe next week going back towards 177 stop sign. pretty shitty paving, it doesn't seem any better. Might be because they are recycling the same asphalt. Grind it up and put it back.

This is why I will never drive on Rice Rd. again. I have seen horrible accidents on this road.

I think anyone who has driven that road with any regularity has seen some bad stuff. I get the intent of his post (because I'm pretty impatient when driving) but.....one single thing doesn't go right at those speeds and you've got one big problem very quickly.....that you may or may not be able to handle. Slow down for your sake and those around you.

This. Cars are safer. People were doing these speeds 30 years ago and there was little enforcement.

Most everyone here has had road sodas on Rice Road 20-30 years ago on their way to the river.

Passing 40 cars at 100 mph is not slowing down. Cars today are much faster than the 90s. In the 80s a 454 big block could not get out of its way. I love Seeing the police pull over a reckless driver on the road or on water. These are the people that hurt others by their behavior.

We have been going Ehrenberg for years now and also have started going through Quartzite to stop at Silly Al's on the way for dinner. With our whole family in the car it just isn't worth the 15-20 minutes shorter the drive is by going Rice.

I'll point out that the double yellow line means a driver cannot initiate passing. It doesn't prohibit a passing vehicle from completing a pass already in progress if the beginning of the zone is entered during its completion, before the part of road that's unseen and the reason for the zone is entered. And to point out the obvious, I didn't just say it's OK to pass a car a hundred yards before the no passing zone starts. Try not to be that guy on the internet, please.

This is, obviously, a judgement situation where driver skill and experience is the key factor. I'm old as hell, and have probably driven well over a hundred thousand miles on major two lane highways. I've passed too many cars to count at speeds approaching or over 100 MPH, and not one of them was close to being unsafe.

Do drivers today have those skills? Would I be comfortable driving on Rice Road on holiday weekends, and passing that many vehicles? Fuck no.

having driven that road more times than just about anyone on here.. (well maybe except flybywire) I think people have shown way down compared to what it used to be..

More enforcement is the reason why..

My first car was a 1990 Acura integra.. it ran 146 mph on the rev limiter. My buddy had an automatic Honda accord ran 160’ish..
