Just buy a Bonanza... 🤣🤣🤣

But no, seriously, that's what you are going to end up with...

I wonder how practical a folding wing kitfox speedster or glasair sportsman would be? I could tow it to and from the FBO 500 feet to my shop with a golf cart?

Of those two, I'd take a Sportsman unless you are going to do a bunch of back country flying then the Kitfox.

Tigers are are good choice. They aren't fast but are comfortable and economical to operate.

Check out the Vans RV-12.

Love the RVs… But I am interested in the folding wing kit planes. I live in an airpark but not on the taxiways. I could store a kitfox/glasair at my house in the rear shop and tow it wings back about 500 feet through the FBO vehicle gate. I just just don’t know how practical that would be.

I built an RV-7A, and completed it in 2017. I/O 360 c/s. It took 15 years.
I had a nice IFR 1979 Cessna C-172, but sold it soon after my RV was airworthy, in 2018. I flew it all over in the summer. It had an o-320, with a few performance bolt on‘s.
I flew out of flagstaff a few times in the summer, with full tanks (solo). It’s a little sketchy for the first 100’, but always got the climb rate the manual said it would. 😉

Bonanza is out then, if my wings are folded back I have some serious issues to overcome 😂
My wife is on your side! We just did her first front seat ride with me in a beech sundowner and she said “it feels like we are going really slow”

Mostly just my wife and I. Cheeseburger chasing out of P19 and KDVT. I live at p19 and have a place in Page, so some trips to Page. We have family in Hesperia so weekenders from p19/KDVT to Victorville/hesperia. My wife joins me in retirement at the end of the year and we are dreaming of flying out of the valley in the summers up in the small towns in the remote places up north (idaho/Wyoming).

A 180/185 is probably a good fit, but I am working with more of a 170b/kitfox budget. I am probably a year and a half to two years away from having a hanger. Unless like I mentioned a folding wing experimental could eliminate the need for a hanger.

I was on KDVT hangar list in 2006, it was 8 years long.
2009, they called me, and said everyone in front of me canceled. I wasn’t ready to move my experimental project to the hangar, so I bought the Cessna, as the economy tank, and picked it up for $30k ( flew it for 10 years, and put 500 hours on it), and sold it for $60k. Im still out there, south side. 😉

I fly/rent a beech sundowner out of the north hangers. I am about 1.5 years away on the hanger list. The distance to dvt is a drag from chandler but all my support flys out of there. My cfi and soon to be cfii is there. So is my friend who is a 777 pilot and cfi who owns a 170b and will do my tail wheel endorsement. I would love to network with you and do pilots stuff!

I hope you can find a nice C180 to purchase in the future. Gotta be lots of places around Arizona to explore in a Skywagon.

The sky wagons are crazy expensive and I am not ready for a 150-180k plane. My whole life has been more buying 5k boats and refurbishing them to nice useable conversation pieces. I have no problem with the kitplane community. I actually like the idea of knowing firsthand every nut and bolt of the plane with new motors and instruments. I might rent for another year or so and start a build. I have been checking at the bear hawk 5 this week!

My buddy might be parting with his 170b which could change the plan, I don’t think I could pass that up. Slow and low isn’t always ideal but at my skill level keeping up with the plane is challenging at 100 knots some days.

Very cool, hopefully we will be able to help you out as well with our new venture. I’m hoping to be partially operational by 10/1.

Here is a little video interview my business partner Chris did with one of his multi students a while back. There is some insight in this interview as well it will give you some insight into who I’m playing ball with and what he brings to the table. Best of luck on your path and I look forward to helping you along the way if we can. 👍

If you are looking for a project I might have something you'd be interested in. But it is exactly that, a project.

Did you decide on part 61 or 141? When you do your long cross country solo fly into havasu and we can meet up and cheer you on!
61. I still have a full time job... lol. Yup, I plan on hitting Havasu for at least one of the long cross country flights. It will probably be 2 actual sessions with the instructor per week, plus I'm taking care of most of the ground school online. I spoke with the outfit and they are cool with me doing a combo of in person ground school and online. Basically said your instructor will be able to tell pretty quick what in person instruction you need and I'll only be charged for the actual time with him in person, 15 minute increments.

My buddies who fly when they owned were all into club flying or joint ownership. Basically set it up like a business with rotating schedule preferences and two different accounts to hold money and pay rental to their own plane. They would book it out and tally it all up each month, then the rental fee's each one paid went into the joint accounts for annual inspections and general maintenance. I think I'd have to know the person pretty good to go about it that way, but it's not a bad idea to co-ownership on something like a this.

And we are off...

Hardest part of the day was signing up for all the FAA crap online. Flying was awesome even though it was just basic level flight and gradual turns. Airport was getting pretty busy at the end.

I would get an updated copy of this book. It ties everything together pretty nicely. I am not advocating just cramming it but I found it useful leading up to the check ride.

Nice. Our club is putting Aspens in all the airplanes, looking forward to that upgrade.

Flew the Saratoga to the cabin over labor day. perfect mission for GA, a little over 3 hours versus a 9+ hour drive and holiday traffic.

For pilots there is no explanation needed, 201mph on 14 gal per hr in smooth air is kinda nice.

Nice. Still in the very early stages. Got to talk to ground and air control yesterday. I don't think they laughed to hard and seemed patient. Still in level flight, ascents descents with turns, and today... unless I've forgotten everything up to this point, we're going to start steep turns and power off stalls. Hit a little wind right after takeoff yesterday... Wanted to yell Fuck Yeah... but I didn't think that would be appropriate 😂

Anybody in the South Corona area between Lake Mathews and Elsinore today between 9 - 10... look up. That will be me in the little white Piper Cherokee doing circles at about 4000 ft.

I got a little seat time yesterday afternoon, about 4:00 we flew down to corona and picked up a few cases of oil from aircraft spruce. Threaded the needle on airspace from cable between ontario and bracket then down the west side of the 71. Would have been 3 hours of traffic that time of day, flight was maybe 15 minutes or so each way while looking at commuter traffic below😂

No seat time lately, seems like I'm drawn every other direction. Too damn busy, but as I read this thread, I just got a 7-11 Hot Dog, drove to the airport, opened my hanger, (on my way home from helping my 85 y.o. Mom in the last stages of moving out of her house of 67 years), sat down, and am enjoying the hot dog and feeling the cool fall evening air.

2nd Career in retirement from PD, and possibly a part time gig on my days off between now and retirement. It will take me a few years to get enough hours and certs to get hired in any type of commercial capacity. Still wide open on what type of commercial flying I'll be doing. Unless Cali completely screws cops in retirement (they are always threatening) I won't need a crazy salary to maintain and enjoy life. Just want something that I will actually enjoy doing instead of just staring at the walls. Basically a career that if it all works out, I don't need, but want, if you know what I mean.

Steep turns were fun. No idea you would hit your "wake" at 4500 ft in air... I thought that was just a boat/water thing 😂 The actual flying has been a blast so far.

I’ve talked with kids that have gone from intro flight to getting hired at sky west in three years if they are focused and hit it hard. It pretty crazy how fast people can progress if they are all in.

You’ll have to stop by for lunch when you start soloing.

There's another rare plane in the photo.

You'd look good in a Duke.

😁
If I could find one with decent times on the engines.... I'd just pay my club dues again and go fly the Bonanza. 🤣

I would love to have a good all weather traveling airplane, but my spousal unit doesn't agree. For most of the trips/vacations we take a 160-190 KTAS airplane would keep us out of the airline terminals with the same door-to-door times or better. The Saratoga is perfect for our trips to MN because your only real option is to drive. For Florida (Or the Southeast coast of the US) there is usually good airline connections so we travel that way, though price wise it usually is a wash. If I was ever given the green light either an Aerostar 600 or a Baron 55 C/D/E model would be on the short list.

I wouldn't own a Duke with the PT6 though. I'm sure it's a hot rod, but the piston engines are reliable if well taken care of and the cost delta is never made back. A nice old King Air would do the trick. A tick slower but very roomy and better useful load.

I figure the reality is pretty much like everything else in life. Initial purchase or buy into a club, very active. Overtime, it starts to fade a bit and then weeks go by without a second look. I'm hoping to avoid that by simply putting in a flight a week, or if longer every other week after getting my PPL. Even if it just to jump in the seat and go stare at the mountains. We will see. I'm constantly looking at controller.com and going over planes. There seem to be decent deals to be had, but that part of the deal is still way out for me. I'm thinking my best bet is to join a club until I actually get a hanger space that is reasonable to own/rent.
