Old pickup trucks, just because.

I’ve been thinking I need an old pickup truck again in the fleet, something used and well worn in, patina is okay and just the right amount of crustiness to keep it real. While restored and fixed up stuff is cool, I like survivor stuff better that lets you imagine a story behind it and also is just functional and not something you have to worry about.

I’ve never had a Ford highboy, I think that’s my next move when the right one pops up, big block, 4x4, auto trans, power steering. Maybe even a flat bed LOL

I will own a bumpside F250 hiboy in the next 2 years. Watch the market daily, and just missed a ‘71 here in canyon lake for $6k needing brake work. Really really want a white one. Will settle for the lighter green, yellow, or a two tone one if the patina and price is right. I am a fan of survivors, repaints rip the soul out of a vehicle.

Took a break from work last night and rode my bike over to the local highschool football boosters car show. This was my pick of the show. I had a unibody for a few years, survivor and it had a lumber rack. I used it to haul material once in a while or to do estimates out of if I thought people needed to see that image from their carpenter

Mine has never changed hands. In fact this truck was my grandpas and I drove it all through high school. Here’s the OG picture…..

Old pickups you say. Here is mine. '57 GMC with Napco dealer installed 4x4. This was the ranch foremans pickup on my Grandpa's ranch. I grew up next to the ranch, on the town side, so, since I was 5 or so, I would see this pickup heading to town and back. It always caught my eye, even as a little kid. It had been put out to pasture, literally, for quite a while, by '83, when my Grandpa died. I asked for and got the pickup. I went through the brakes and bearings, etc., and then used it for a dump run and hunting pickup for 15 years, then, parked it in the field at my Mom's house. Now, after another 24 year rest I'm bringing it home, as Mom sold her house and is downsizing. I'll get it running again. It's a tank to drive. To make room for the Napco front axle, they had to raise the front quite a bit, as there is not much room between the front frame rails and the axle tubes. To make it work, Napco supplied front leaf springs that truly have no give, so the front wouldn't bottom out.

Friend of mine at work buys sells flips fixes up these Fords. Shoot me a PM if you want me to hook you up with him. He always has lots of leads. He deals with old mopars as well. Hell he might even have something sitting around.

Current truck, "Fred", is an 80 something Silverado. 500$ beater put together as daughter's 1st car 5 years ago. She's driving something smaller now for college. So, I inherited, and flog it.

This is the truck I sold to pay for my concrete on my shop building. A high school friend and his dad and grandpa built it in the backyard in the 90's. My brother bought it in 2000, 351 and top loader. I swapped it to efi and an AOD for him...then it sat until 13, and I moved it out here...where it sat until 17. For resale purposes, it got the steelies, and a 5.3 with a 4L60...as it sits in this pic.

Current owner put AC on it, and nice interior. His wife drives the hell out of it now...he kept it looking the same, with the 30+ year old paint from a backyard.

16 year old me that grew up in Washington has a hard on. 40 year old me says lose the lift blocks add some traction bars and level the front. Would still clear the boggers by a mile. Sick truck

Sisters 76 she drove her senior year. 1990. Was my old mans. He blew it up and had me and a buddy pull the motor and detail the engine bay at 14. We thought we were studs. Him and his buddy built up a 350. Cam, roller rockers big carb. Then gave it to my sister. She rallied it. Traded it for a lame Hyundai. Which she hated.

1967 C20 which only came long bed but I cut it down to a shortbed. I was going to paint it but don't mind it as is so I just drive it as is. Fun little truck.

Lifted it. Built up the motor. Had the 4 speed and transfer case rebuilt. Was a fun truck. Should have never sold it.

This one was sitting in San Dimas for 50 years. The guy bought it, and I picked it up and brought it out here. Put hydraulic brakes on it, lowered it and got it running with a later flathead. This truck with a modern motor and trans would have been a blast!

Probably the same one but that thing was for sale on foothill Boulevard in Upland for quite some time. Took a look at it a few times but I wasn’t looking for something that was so nice I couldn’t use it to move stuff around in.

It’s the same one I bought it back
Really debated on doing it to replace the 2020
So Kept my 2020 Silverado for a little bit
But prefer driving the 89
Sold the 2020 last week and bought a challenger
Now best of both worlds

I regretfully sold two square bodies for pennies on the dollar in 2015 as I left my life in the PNW behind for greener/dryer pastures (kept the landcruiser). Wouldn't have cost me anything to leave them sit, but they would have just kept deteriorating. $4k for the truck and $3k for the blazer less wheels and tires . They were both very nice, and I did all the restoration work on the truck myself, including new sheetmetal, body work, prime & blocking, paint, and interior. Hope the new owners are enjoying them. Kids, don't sell ANYTHING. @bonesfab has it figured out!

For some reason, I have zero desire to own another square body. Next old truck will be an early ford. I think Ford had way better styling from the late 60's on through the mid 90's. GM overcame them in '95 IMO with the new updated OBS interior, so much better than Fords.
