So in the first post it says the course in "intended to be free." Go to the AZ Fish & Game website and it says that you can go to one of the third-party websites, or attend an in-person event. No in-person events planned anywhere in the state at this time. Fine, so I go to both of the third-party websites and the course is $35. 🤔 I'm thinking the owners of these sites helped get the bill passed. Our pass renews in early Dec.

Riddle me this, and I apologize if this has already been addressed, though I did half-heartedly check, if the SxS has a street plate, isn't it classified the same as a Jeep? or do Jeeps fall under this also? I thought I read they did not, this was for UTVs and motorcycles. Do Jeeps need to get the off-road pass also? We don't have one for our Colorado that we sometimes take off-road, should we?

UTVs are not a street legal vehicle by design. They DO NOT comply with the same airbag, bumper, side impact, emissions, etc standards that a 2012 Kia does. Certain states register UTVs for on road use.
Although I've never, EVER seen a RZR or such going down Interstate 40. Why not? If it's legal?

Also case in point, the Roxor, a revamp of a Jeep CJ7, made in India, and is probably safer than my AMC Jeep CJ7, is considered a UTV. Roxor is a 2020 something model. Mine is a 1979.

I have a street plate for my XR600R. Been all over with it. (Even I-40) Never had an OHV sticker. I didn't ask. I don't think I need one.
Same with the Jeep. Street legal and unsafe at any speed.

UTV's in Arizona are plated with MC plates. Motorcycle etc...
That's also why there is no need for emissions testing on them in Maricopa and Pima counties. Motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing.

And why the 18 and younger crowd needs helmets in them. Since 1976.

AZ already has that.
Help me understand, would like better clarification, maybe I missed something… a non AZ resident already needs a non-resident OHV sticker?/ course/ permit? Where do they get that from?

So in 2019 AZ started requiring out of state people the get a visitor permit. CA followed suit after that.

Get the registration decal here

Now if you are a non resident with a AZ plated OHV, who knows. In the dirt I’d show my AZ ID.

On the street in AZ, this is irrelevant because you are not off-road, so show your home state DL obviously.

Be aware CA now has the same policy and requires out of state OHV registration and registration is no longer reciprocal between AZ and CA. As a CA resident with an AZ plated OHV, you would still need to buy a CA non resident registration. See here.

Good to know. Im spoiled as an AZ resident so never paid attention to that change. Thx

AZ OHV plated RZR’s. They were plated for OHV use only.
When I am out and about in the dirt, I show my AZ ID, even in CA.
I also have the non-resident stickers for CA.

I will need to monitor this, but I was told the safety course was only needed when SXS is plated for on-road usage not off road. Time will tell, but this is another example of passing a law and not thinking about the ‘how’

This gets more confusing, when you read the article.

The legislation additionally instructs the Arizona Game and Fish Department to certify a safety course in off-road driving. Starting in 2025, a person will be expected to complete this safety course and provide proof of completion to the transportation department.

The safety course requirement will be repealed in June 2027.

So, the safety course is only in effect from Jan 1, 2025 to June 1, 2027.

SXS are put in the Motorcycle category in AZ.
Most violations are not moving violations that will effect my driving record.
In the very unlikely event I get a equipment ticket, I'll pay the fines.
I have a glove box full of permits, driver course certs for several states + proof of insurance.

The kids have always been helmeted/belted and the dogs strapped down. Safety first.

I'm registered until April 2026 but I took the test.
Super EZ.
Watch a video and answer 20 questions. I aced the test so not sure what it does if you answer a question wrong.
https://azmvdnow.gov/titleregistration/offhighway/test
It said i passed test but no type of certificate. I think I have to take it again next time for renewal.
I don't get it but 15 minutes of my time and done

The alcohol law change, and a reason to safety check…..

I am sure there’s going to be some enforcement to get the ball rolling. Be safe. 😉

I didn't read the whole thread... but aren't most of these a good thing?

Online safety course should be pretty straight forward and easy. I hate helmets personally but under 18 kinda makes some sense(although this leads to a helmeted future 👎). Everything else we should already be doing anyways, no? If you're mad you can't drink and drive now... well you legally couldn't before anyways(and shouldn't be).

I fully understand rules lead to more rules and restrictions, but these ones seem pretty moderate so far...

Specifically, any flashing lights.
Solid color rear facing is legal.
One of the questions was what color lights are legal on the front. White and amber.
All of the answers are in the video. I just wrote down notes since there were helmet and car seat questions.
If a child is properly restrained in a car seat they don't need a helmet.
One strange answer was when approaching a horse. You stop, turn off motor, and remove your helmet.

Apparently the helmet removal, which is recommended and observed internationally, often in addition to allowing it to hear your voice, is to convey to the horse you are human and not a predator threat so as not to spook it.
All I know is, my wife hates it when I play stare down and chicken with large bulls that seem to be beggin to become a steak dinner. 🤣

My reg and OHV was this month, so it's been paid and got the tags, so I suppose I'll be testing for next year's OHV.

Yup, although haven't encountered sheep yet. The picture below is an example of the type of encounter that causes my lovely wife / navigator to offer recommendations as to how I should proceed --- OR NOT :D
Naturally I tend to seize upon this moment of her obvious growing concern by making the opportunity a game of challenge by edging forward, little by little. 🤣

This black bitch was obviously guarding her two young and I always make it a point not to spook the kids, or stress out guard mom.
But I just had to stop and snap a pic of her "Do not f*ck with us" body language. After issuing "The Look", she guided them off the road to safety at which point I noticed my wife started breathing again. 🤣

Good reason for a horn/siren. The horses and donkeys at least get off the road and I try not to spook them. The cows half the time run into the damn road once they start moving 😂

A couple years ago at a race in Mexico a competitor in our class hit a horse in his Can-Am. The horse had stepped out onto the course in an area where the course is super narrow and tree lined but a high speed section. It’s the same area where Kurt Caselli was killed after hitting a horse in a race.

The damage done to the car was unreal.

He parked next to us at the finish line celebration. His daughter was his navigator and she’s lucky to be alive as the horse came halfway into the cockpit. She was pretty shook up and covered in horse blood.

Livestock scares the shit out of me on the race course.

Moral of the story is avoid livestock at all times. Those things will total a UTV lol

No idea why this story is pertinent to the thread but it struck a memory for me and reminded me of Kurt, RIP.

I agree, it's the small herd running in our same direction along the edge of the road that make me nervous hoping one doesn't dart into our path.

The horn often helps to clear the road of a small group, but I tried that once during a playful 'Mex Stand-off' with a fully armed large black bull. He reacted by lowering his head and pawing the ground, that's when my navigator threatened bodily harm if I didn't Back-the-F*ck-Off and move on. 👿 🥴 🤣

That's funny. Whenever I come up to something I try to think what Mrs EZ might say to me.
I get it wrong every time lol
Her favorites are "don't scare it", "don't do it" and "just go"

Funny, because our 40 acres is smack in the midst of cattle ranching country, cattle are a rather frequent encounter. In fact because they seem to have more rights then property owners, if we don't fence them out, they can free range on your front porch.
The worse encounter we had, was with about the smallest. --- Warm day, we're wearing tee's and shorts, no helmets, but ball caps, in our SxS exploring a trail in lined with dense bushes.
Suddenly I realized we were being engulfed by a huge swarm of migrating bees. There was no escape other than straight through the increasingly growing swarm.
I tried to ignore the growing hoard passing through the cab, focus on the trail ahead and reminding my wife to protect herself, but not swat at them which was her initial reaction.
How neither of us got stung is a miracle, but I kept hoping a queen wouldn't latch on for the ride causing the rest to follow. That was truly freaky. 🥵
