Y’all will bitch and complain, but then conform, and pretty soon it’s normal. Welcome to Eastern California. Pretty soon you will need to smog your vehicles, have limited gun and ammunition availability, and participate in alphabet people training classes.
This is why I didn’t want to buy the pre def Rv. Everyone says Arizona is right behind ca so me registering it there wouldn’t much matter either

So if I live in Cali. And ride and Az. The safety course doesn’t apply ?
This could be an opportunity to begin an “out of state use tag” or permit too like Utah has.

I took the course and got my card. Probably one of the few to have it. BTW its a JOKE that those who need training the most (renters) are exempt.
Ditto for the Calif boater safety course and card, renters who need the training way more than owners, are exempt. Proof that it's just a money grab and a JOKE.
F those in charge but I've learned its easier to comply and be a good doobie. Makes interactions with LEO go way better.
Land of the free? I often think I have more freedoms in Mexico (yes I have permanenty Mexican residency so I'm all legal there too).

So kids have to be 12 before they can drive a RZR170/200?
The cc thing has been around for awhile in California but nobody adheres to it. That’s why the little 110 kids quads are getting bigger but the displacement stays 110. Learned that from the dealership the other day when I asked why they don’t make a small 250cc kids quad or something in between the 110 and the full size quads.

I feel most of these laws came about from driving on the roads, which is what most az people prefer. keep your shit off-road and probably would have been fine. haha
My next door neighbor has new RZR Turbo R 4 that he and his wife take to dinner and convenience stores all the time rather than driving his raptor or her beamer. I'm not sure why as it has no AC or heating and is loud as hell, but they apparently enjoy it.

My friend's neighbor has a new Can Am Maverick X3 RS Turbo RR that he and his wife use to drop the kids off at school daily. Again, not sure why as they have a perfectly nice and new Escalade and F350 they could use, but again, they enjoy it.

I believe it is a matter of when you have a payment on something, you feel compelled to use it all the time for no other reason than to feel like you're not wasting your money every month.

For our family it's more of the experience, my nieces like to be dropped off at school in the talon. Their school is only a couple miles from my house but I'll take the trails getting there, then after they are dropped off my oldest son and I will go bop around in the dirt a little more before breakfast

It's just something different for them, I think they get tired of the monotony of riding in a closed cabin vehicle

I think you summed up the real reasons…

They enjoy it.

Your kid will want to be taken to school in your SxS 100% of the times you offer, weather permitting.

Whats weird is the helmet laws been around for a long time just never really enforced by LEOs, mainly just Game and Fish. I got a ticket for it 5 years ago or so, it was $700 ticket. So, are you good with empties in the bed of the SXS in a trash bag or bak in the cooler. I dont drink unitl we get back to the house anyway, just wondering about the wife's seltzers etc....

Not necessarily MAGA, remember, there’s a lot of lightweight rhino types in this state. How do you think John McCain kept getting reelected?

I do worry about new rules in Havasu because some knuckleheads can’t use common sense. Hopefully I am wrong because this is a motorsports oriented type town. Unfortunately we have a lot of retirees that just want to die in peace. Some of them have forgotten what it’s like to be young and have fun.

How to enforce ? Hire more revenue collectors at tax payer expense . Hyper enforce any and all misdemeanor violations and walla , instant extra revenue generation .

You must be crazy ! There are no quotas !

Everything is for you own protection!

They only ask, How much have you had to drink to verify your hydration status ! You might need more electrolytes !

Safety course I'm OK with. There are plenty of bad drivers that need it. So maybe that add a tiny amount of knowledge.

Helmets don't impact us. But I think I'm OK with it under 18. I'm thinking all of az, not simply havasu. Reducing child injuries is my thinking here. The vast majority of havasu I see kids wearing them already.

Alcohol. This one sucks. They just created desert trash. A handful of empties in the car and you're set up for questioning. I don't 'drink' and drive. But at stops there are beers my 'friends' may consume.

Let's not kid ourselves. This was coming. Nobody should be surprised.

The government upper hand I understand. It sucks

If you (not you, RR, but everyone in general in CA) wonder why other states dislike Californians, I offer this as Exhibit A. Californians move to other states with this mentality. "Well, I agree with SOME loss of freedom because it makes sense. People will be safer if we take some freedoms away." Not all the freedoms, but some. This is because Californians have already been living under many of these rules, so they've accepted them as normal. Then they move to other states and have no issue if someone proposes similar laws in your new state because you've already been subjugated under those rules, so they are used to them. They are used to having less freedom, so they don't mind when those are taken from them. And then, next thing you know, you're living in CA light.

So when people say things like, "Leave your California politics there," this is exactly what they are talking about. Your response is, "Oh, no, I'm a Conservative," but are you really, compared to the people of the state that you're moving to? They aren't just talking about who you are voting for for president. Again, I know you're not moving, RR, just using your post as an example of how I think many SoCal conservatives feel. And I could be way off the mark here, but based on my experiences, including my own ingrained SoCal cultural thinking that I've had to retrain, this is what I see, and I understand why long-time residents of free states do not appreciate people from any of the West Coast states.

Case in point, we have a friend up here from the L.A. area. Just moved here about 18 months ago. He is an Elk and is trying to get a campaign going for people to not text and drive. "Can you believe it isn't against the law here in Montana? That's crazy!" Yes, he's conservative, he came to Montana for the freedom and the romance of it. He's a great guy, I enjoy his company, but I have to bite my tongue about the texting thing. If there was a law on the ballot he would absolutely vote for it.

It's the slippery slope of government big and little from your local city council to the asshats in DC. Once you give them a bite at the apple two things are guaranteed.

1. A second bite is inevitable etc until it's just the core left.
2. You the citizen are going to lose more of your freedoms and they're going to charge you for the privilege.

Except rentals which are fucking out of hand and the worst offenders like jetskis.
Yeah, this exception is absolute absurdity.

Same with CA Boating license we have to have here now. I had to get my license this year because I've been "courtesy checked " twice and they recorded my last. Ticket is next. 40 years of continuous boat ownership doesn't matter, But Rental Pontoons and Watercraft are exempt from this law. WTF? We all deal with rentals and leave extra room because stupidity is sure to follow. We had one death this year at the lake m, that I'm aware of.. Yep, passenger propped by their own rental boat.

That sort of stupidity makes me avoid all politics because there is no logic or common sense.

We all know who the renters are in most cases. They are usually left leaning imbeciles.

This is where the whole "it's all about perspective" comes into play. As someone who rides a motorcycle everyday not only do I think it should be against the law, the fines should be huge if caught more than once. It's completely ridiculous how often I almost get hit because some dipshit is playing with their phone

There is something to be said for the increased danger due to population density. I'm not advocating texting and driving, and I totally get where you're coming from. I'm saying the laws in SoCal do not need to be the same in rural Montana. But with a SoCal perspective, my friend thinks it's insane that there is no law about it here. Is it? We have one city over 100K people. That is Billings at ~116K. The fifth largest is Butte at ~35K. If you get in an accident texting and driving, chances are you will be the only car in the accident when you end up in a ditch. That goes for cell phone use also. There is not a state law against it.

To my point, we don't want ANY of your California laws here. Not even the ones that you think are valid and common sense. I would guess that most of the AZ residents feel the same way. This is why they don't even like "conservative" Californians, Oregonians, and Washingtonians as a whole.

What about a jeep that is used on the highway and off-road. In AZ is that considered an OHV?

AZ definition of a OHV

What is the legal definition of an off-highway vehicle?

Off-highway vehicles are defined as being a motorized vehicle that is operated primarily off of highways and is designed, modified or purpose-built primarily for recreational nonhighway all-terrain travel.
This includes a tracked or wheeled vehicle, utility vehicle, all-terrain vehicle, motorcycle, four-wheel drive vehicle, dune buggy, sand rail, amphibious vehicle, ground effects or air-cushion vehicle and any other means of land transportation deriving motive power from a source other than muscle or wind.

Well, congestion certainly plays a part in total crashes for any reasons.
Montana doesn’t even make the top 25 states in texting crashes. There ain’t that many drivers for sure.
Of course, another reason could be because Montana drivers are mostly too drunk to work their phones?
They lead the nation in drunk driving deaths per capita and have led the nation 7 of the last 9 years. (5 years in a row at one point)
In 2020 67% of vehicle deaths in Montana were drunk driving crashes.
Your pal is statistically probably drunk when he leaves the elk club!

So where does an XR600R fit in?
How about a Harley Davidson?

The AZ law is ambiguous at best.

Until 15 or so years ago, you could be drinking, but not drunk while you were driving. There was also no speed limit on the interstate and many highways. The feds put the cabosh on both of those and withheld federal highway funds until Montana legislature passed the laws. So . . . many people here refuse to comply. Yes. We have a lot of drunk driving deaths here. There are a lot of other ways to die here as well. It's not for the weak or limp-wristed.

Pickup trucks, SUVs, cars and other recreational vehicles are not required (and will not be able) to obtain an OHV decal.

That's a great question. I'd start with your local state representative or senator. Ask them what it takes to repeal it.
Can we ask about banning, or restricting wake surf boats on The Strip while we're at it? PLEASE!😁

No open containers in the car.. meaning if you get stopped you can get cited etc for even having them in the car. You now have to have a license to drive one!! Meaning no kids driving 150’s / 170’s / 200’s.. or what my friends do and get their kids 800’s and 900’s to follow the parents around..

It’s pretty fucked

Vehicles needing OHV Decal.jpg

I agree that like many laws, this one word that allows for interpretation " and is designed, modified or purpose-built primarily for recreational nonhighway all-terrain travel."
In Arizona UTVs require an OHV plate and sticker from day one, regardless if you make the modifications to allow it to be plated for on-highway use. My understanding is, with this new law you will be required to submit the Safety Course certificate in order to obtain the OHV renewal --- Hopefully, just once and it's done.

" The XR600R was in Honda's line from 1985 to 2000 as a dirt-only model, and was almost unchanged for the last 12 years of that run. "

In your example, the Honda XL500 I owned was designed and sold as a street legal bike that I also used frequently offroad. My friend with the Honda XR500 had to trailer his to riding areas to be legal.

If that XL500 were modified to make it marginally street legal and primarily off highway, then that could muddy the waters, but to what extent ?
For the OHV permit that wouldn't have been required initially anyway ?

If the 150s/170s/200s were registered under "Dave's Flatbed Rentals, LLC" (for example) couldn't anybody drive them?

From the first post in this thread, kids under 16 cant drive on highways/roadways, but can drive on ohv trails.

Or are you saying kids cant follow parents around on the streets is the problem?

I read it from post 51 which made no distinction..

Anyone have a link to the actual bill so we can read it?

So where does an XR600R fit in?
How about a Harley Davidson?

The AZ law is ambiguous at best.

Dan'l

If it’s going off road you need the sticker and the course to get it. They made me buy one for my wife's dual sport bike which was 95% street driven.

So how does one repeal this new legislation?

First ask, what politician would support repealing a child helmet law, drinking and driving regulation and a safety course.

Take the stupid course, get the kids a brain bucket and move on.

If AZGF makes it like the hunter safety class for kids, it will be a fucking joke.

Arizona is a referendum State so...
You have roughly 60 days left to file the required paperwork, obtain a minimum of 130,000 valid signatures from eligible voters and then you can get this put on the next election ballot.

At that point you'll have to convince a majority of the voters to agree with you.
Good Luck.

Kids can drive kid utv's in the dirt in California.
