Do you get the permit in the county you live in? I had never really cared to own guns but things seem to be changing pretty fast. I at least want to get some basic training learn some fundamentals and basic care maintenance of whatever I get.

Depending on your background check and If you can obtain the permit in the County you reside in the permit would then be good throughout anywhere in the State of Ca.
School zones, .Gov offices, airports, etc., etc.laws apply and you need to know those laws VERY well.

Counties range from "Will Issue" down to "No Issue".

Quick synopsis for SoCal. If outside of SoCal you can still PM and I'll do what I can to help.

San Berdoo County-good to go
Riverside County-good to go with a little more hoops
Orange County-currently good to go, just need to detail good cause and hope Peruta decision doesn't get overturned.
San Diego County-Not anytime soon, Gore is playing games making it a denial by run around
LA County-Not happening unless forced by the law changing. I am hearing chatter about some cities starting to issue though.

For out of state you do have options. Arizona, Utah and Florida being the easiest. Nevada is super easy but you need to actually go to Nevada.

For Utah somebody here (me) is certified by Utah BCI to certify applicants. I'll do it cheap for you guys but I do have to spend a couple hours and give the minimum information required. I will do this for those that can show me they have proper defensive training. If you don't then I can spend some more time with you and give you the basics but it would cost a little more and require a range trip. No panties in a bunch here. I believe the 2nd Amendment is all that you should need to carry. But I also believe personal responsibility should be taken to train and know what to do with a lethal weapon you plan to carry. So if I am going to personally put my name behind someone then I need to feel comfortable that you understand the basics at least and can safely handle a weapon in public.

The other states I'll just pass along the info on how to get them.

Great info. I'm in Riverside county. Need to find out the extra "hoops" needed.

I was close to applying when I was shooting in IDPA but got lazy. Not this time.

Not much extra hoops just have to be real clear on your good cause and you will need reference letters in Riverside. Gotta run to church so PM a reminder and I'll get you the info on Riverside.

I just did IDPA for the first time Saturday before Thanksgiving. Fun and cheap. Some things I don't agree with for real life situations but that's what you get when a game is involved. Still fun and I just do what I do for the self defense and not for the game. Still did well even though I got some procedurals for stupid crap they didn't explain or because we differed (like I won't crowd my cover just to be in the prescribed gaming spot. My mind works in defensive muscle memory and not gaming memory.

I have to look up the chatter. Go search on Calguns. That might have been where I saw it. I think it might have been West Covina.

Sheriff is always best. Police Chiefs change too often. Upland started issuing for a minute when they got a replacement Chief. Well that only lasted so long and the permanent guy (read 2-3 years usually) came from LAPD and put a stop to it. Dead cold even if in the process. Yep Michel and Associates have a lawsuit but all those people are back to the Sheriff like they should have just done in the first place.

I know we have had our share of food fights down in the PF. That not withstanding, you seem to be much more like the "fab 5" than a progressive on issues of taking care of your family, your way. Some of us have been accused of being bullies. We aren't, we're ruggedly independent people whom don't want, expect or need a government to take the responsibility of our safety. (Isn't it clear that are not capable)

I really feel for those of you in California. There are bound to be tighter gun controls now. It's obvious that the current laws aren't working. Lets make a bunch more new ones to further make law abiding citizens into outlaws. Most of us simply want to be left alone to succeed, fail, and provide safety all on our own.

Good luck and whatever you get, get proficient as well as your wife. EVEN IF SHE DOESNT WANT TO. Keep it safe within the home. :thumbup:

Yes. San Berdoo county. Not happening with your pot usage though. You will have a full background investigation. You'll need to stop for probably at least a year before they would consider you. PM me for more info.

It's why I fell away from IDPA. Still lots of fun but the scenarios were becoming less effective.

Yes. Or private instruction. Shooting targets in the desert is nothing like real defensive shooting. A good class will get the mechanics down of holster draw and marksmanship as well as malfunctions and reloads but will also get you thinking about combat mindset and what to do in situation and even very importantly how to not get into the gunfight. Some people get all gung ho about this when things like this happen but then when presented with a scenario and asked if they could pull the trigger and take someones life then they cannot come to terms with it. Great. Don't buy a gun, here is your refund, you don't need this training. Learn to run and hide and dial 911.

DUI's won't necessarily bar you from a CCW but like you said it will make things tough.
DUI will fall off your DMV record, not off your criminal record.

I've heard that a DUI over 1 year ago does not disqualify a CCW permit as it does not disqualify hiring of a deputy either.

Just have to try to find out. Hopefully its in a County with a Sheriff that is CCW friendly.
